Love is Blind. Chapter 1.
It was a slow night at Len’s all-in-one 24 hour mart; but then again, when is the midnight shift ever exciting? Seriously, I don’t see the point in staying open all night, who really needs to buy lawn chairs or shampoo at 2 in the morning?
I pondered this while flipping through the latest US weekly, reading yet another article about Britney Spears’ bald-headed adventures. I poked my head up from the magazine, and scanned the store; it was basically empty. Aside from me manning the cash register, there was Kenny, aimlessly stocking shelves… Jan, falling asleep behind the deli counter, and a couple of freshman boys in the candy aisle loading up on munchies with mischievous grins on their faces. Other than that, the store was completely empty. My job is definitely less than desirable, but in small town like Unionville… there are really no other candidates for summer employment.
The small bell above the door lightly jingled; signifying that we had another customer, but I was too consumed in Hollywood gossip to bother looking up. Moments later I could feel a pair of eyes on me. Wearily, I looked up from the magazine and nearly jumped out of my skin. Kenny’s face was about four inches away from mine, and he was staring right at me.
“Jesus! Kenny… what the hell?!” I asked grabbing my heart.
“I need you to go back to the warehouse for a sec.” Kenny said, taking a step back apologetically
“Why? You’re the stock boy, isn’t that your job?” I asked with a hand on my hip. I’m usually not this bit.chy, but come on… it’s midnight!
“I know, but some guy just came in and asked to use the bathroom, and you know our bathroom is back in the warehouse…” Kenny started.
“So you want me to witness the guy using our bathrooms?” I asked, not really sure where he was going with this.
“No… But as you know, it’s company policy to have at least one employee in the warehouse if a customer is utilizing the facilities…” Kenny went on explaining
“You really need to stop memorizing the employee handbook kid” I mumbled
“Anyways, the warehouse staff went home already, so it’s just us and Jan left on staff… so one of us needs to go back there, just to… you know, make sure he doesn’t steal anything.”
“Did he really look like someone who would steal watermelons and Nerf footballs from an all-in-one mart?” I asked Kenny with a raised eyebrow
“Just please go! It won’t be as scary for you; the guy looked around your age.” Kenny said. I looked at the boy’s pleading face, and sighed. Poor guy, he’s only 13 and he already has developed a chronic fear of people. I remember when he first started working here... Len put him on cash duty, and he had an anxiety attack every other day.
“Fine.” I gave in “I’ll make sure every watermelon goes un-scathed, but after that I’m taking my break”
“Thanks Lee, I owe you” Kenny said, breathing a sigh of relief.
