Always
He saw her that one summer, and he couldn’t take his eyes off of her then.
It was sometime in June, when Nick had gone back to the hospital for his usual diabetic check up. Going for the usual appointment with his doctor was tiring, but Nick knew it was the only way he could be on stage, doing things he loves. It was warm and sunny for a typical summer afternoon, but stepping into the hospital brought a sense of gloominess in him. Another reason that he dreaded going for his check-ups. Walking behind his parents, he peered into every room and stopped in front of one particularly lively place. And that was when he saw her.
Bright and cheery.
She was like the sunshine in the room. Wait, no, the whole hospital. Her brown curls bounced around her slender shoulders when she danced around the room with the kids. Laughing, smiling and singing songs with them. Her smile was what captured Nick the most. Happy and innocent, it was the kind that even by seeing it, makes you wanna dance in happiness. Nick continued watching the girl play with the kids, making funny faces and chasing them around before she stopped and looked up, staring straight into Nick’s chocolate brown eyes.
Blue. Deep blue.
Her eyes were the deepest blue he had ever seen in his whole life and it sparkled when she smiled. Nick was captivated by her eyes and the way they crinkle at the sides when she laughed. Finally shaking out of his trance, Nick waved back awkwardly and could feel his heart thumped harder when she smiled back at her in the sweetest way possible.
Was it possible to already fall for someone you had just met for the first time?
Then comes July. A month later.
Nick rushed into the hospital without waiting for his parents and siblings. He wanted to see her, to hear her laughter and to be captivated once more. Ever since the day he met her, Nick couldn’t take his mind off her. He rushed up to the same room he had seen her the first time to find it empty. Dark and gloomy, like everywhere else in the *CENSORED*ed place.
I was too late; he thought sadly and walked over to meet his family who had started questioning about his sudden rush. Nick shook his head lightly and pushed open the door to the doctor’s office, leaving his family staring at him in confusion.
Throughout the whole consultation, Nick wasn’t even listening to Dr. Grey, and the bespectacled man knew it. He gave the young teenager a comforting pat on the shoulder before Nick walked out of the plain, white-walled office.
Then as though a miracle had occurred, she was there, standing outside a doctor’s room.
But this time, it was different. A frown hung on her fair face instead of the happy smile that Nick loved. Her brown curls hung limply, framing her face as she stared down at the brown envelop in her hands.
She looked… confused.
Nick stared at her and debated whether he should walk up to her or just to hide in a corner and continue staring at her. Instead, his question was answered when the girl looked up and stared into Nick’s eyes, like the first time. She smiled lightly and walked up to him, never breaking the eye contact the two held.
“Hello.” Even the way she spoke made Nick want to shiver from the perfectness. Her voice was like a melody to a ballad, twinkling but still held a bout of cheekiness in it.
“H-hi.”
“What’re you doing here?” She walked over to one of the plastic seats and sat down, patting the vacant one beside her lightly to signal for Nick to take it.
“Monthly check-up. I’m Nick by the way.”
“Ahhh, I see.” Nick frowned a little when she did not give him her name. But he was firm on finding it out.
“What’s your name? I told you mine.”
“My name?” She paused for a moment and grinned cheekily. “What’s the season now?”
“Summer…”
“Always.” The girl smiled before getting up from her seat and walking away from a baffled Nick. She was mysterious, but at least Nick knew her name. And it fitted her perfectly.
Summer.
A few months came and a few months went.
At first, the two would meet in the hospital and spend their time there chatting or hanging out with the kids in the nursery.
Then as weeks went by, Nick and Summer grew closer. Hanging out with each for most of their free time or just talking to each other on the phone. Nick loved it; he loved to hear her voice and her laughter. He loved the way she glowed when she smiled. She didn’t care when she found out about his band. She didn’t care that he was famous and many girls ‘wanted’ him. She just wanted to be his friend.
But as weeks went by, he realizes that he had to tell her how he felt. It was killing Nick to be so close to her, yet hide the ultimate feelings he had for Summer deep inside him. So, meeting Summer in the garden of the hospital, Nick decided to confess to her flat-out. He watched painfully as she bounced around and bent down to pluck a dandelion before plopping down onto the seat beside him. She smiled at Nick as the boy took in a deep breath and mustered up all his courage.
“I love you.” Summer froze in the middle of twirling the dandelion between her slender fingers and stared wide-eyed at the fluffy seeds. A moment of silence hung between them before Summer looked up at Nick and shook her head lightly, smiling at him sadly all the while.
“You can’t.”
“Why not? It’s obvious I love you isn’t it? What’s holding you back?”
“Something major.” Nick could have smiled when she said the word ‘major’. But the seriousness of the situation stopped him from doing so.
“And what’s so major about that something?”
“That I can’t return your feelings.” Nick could have sworn he heard his heart breaking into two. The pain was unbearable and it was killing him.
“Do you have a boyfriend or something? I understand if you don’t like m-”
“I’m dying, Nicholas.”
The words reverberated in the air as Nick stopped mid-sentence and his mouth dropped open at her words. What does she mean she’s dying? Nick looked up at the beautiful girl and watched as she continued twirling the flower around her fingers. That was when something stuck him cold and hard. Summer was getting thinner and thinner as weeks go by. He watched her thin fingers play around with the flower without a worry, looking as though she had nothing to be scared of. She was weaker and not as energetic as she was before.
“H-how?” Nick let out a shaky breath and felt his vision clouding up.
“Leukemia.”
“But your hair…”
“I gave up on treatments completely. It’s going to be useless to me anyway.” Nick grew angry at her words. How could she give up on the treatments? How could she give up on her life? Tears were falling freely from his eyes now and he stood up in anger.
“How could you give up so easily? You’re just letting your life slip through your fingers like that! How could you!”
“Like I told you, it’s useless. The docs said the cancer cells had spread to other parts of my body. I’ve only have about four months left, Nick.” Summer explained and looked up, her own eyes filling up with large, pearly tears. Nick sat back down onto the hard garden bench again and held the girl in his arms. The girl he loved and the girl he’d remember. Forever.
The next four months was a blur for both Nick and Summer.
The two were inseparable. They spent every waking moment together and despite his busy schedule, Nick would always spend time with Summer. His family supported his decision and helped in whatever way they could. But the only solution was to prolong Summer’s life. This, Nick knew, was impossible now.
Summer, on the other hand, had to rely on a wheelchair to get around now. She resisted the idea at first, but gave in totally when her legs finally gave out under her on one of their trips one day. She scared Nick tremendously when she just fell down onto the ground, crying.
Five months later, Nick and Summer were still together. Summer’s sudden prolonged time surprised the doctors deeply, but that was due to her willpower for her last wish. To die during summertime. It was her last and only wish. And she was struggling to keep it. Nick would now accompany her by her bedside and notices when she often jerks awake several times at night before falling back to a restless sleep.
On the first day of the summer season, Summer, requested for Nick to bring her to a field filled with dandelions, her favourite flower. Nick obliged, knowing that it may be the last thing he was doing for her despite her very weakened condition. His elder brothers drove the pair to the dandelion field before waiting in their car as they allowed the pair to spend their time together alone.
Nick pushed Summer’s wheelchair to a shady spot under the tree and helped her off the chair when she reached her hand out, signaling that she wanted to be out of the constriction. He carried Summer out of the chair and leaned her against the trunk of the tree before joining her with a few dandelions he had plucked. Once Nick sat down beside her, Summer leaned her head onto Nick’s shoulder lightly and smiled at the twirling dandelion. The air was filled with Summer’s lavender smell and the summer scent, which Nick found to be an amazing combination.
“Thank you for everything, Nick.”
“Welcome.” Nick turned his face a little to his left and saw the girl slowly lift her head up and stare into Nick’s brown eyes.
“You know, I love you too. Always.” Nick smiled at her words and slowly leaned down to kiss the girl he loved on the lips lightly. Summer smiled against the kiss and broke away promptly for air, coughing dryly as Nick started patting her on the back gently.
“Why did you only tell me that now?”
“Because… I was scared. Scared that if I told you, I’d die, and you’d be left alone. Loneliness ain’t a good feeling. That’s why I spent most of my time with the children in the nursery. But I felt that I had to tell you now. I can’t possible leave the infamous RockStar hanging for an answer, huh?” Summer then leaned her head back onto Nick’s shoulder as they spent what was possibly the girl’s last moment of her life together, enjoying the summer breeze, knowing that they loved each other.
After a few minutes of complete silence from Summer, Nick looked down at her hand to see that she had stopped twirling the flower and her hand was resting on top of his. He did not have to turn to know that the girl he ever loved was gone.
Smiling, Nick picked up the dandelion that Summer was holding and blew it, dispersing its seeds as they traveled with the breeze. A lone tear fell from the corner of his eyes as he said the last words to the breeze. Hoping that it’ll carry his words to Summer somehow.
“I’ll love you, always.”
