Chapter 1
The plane ride was calm. The two girls were quiet for most of the time, only talking briefly when the flight attendant came to ask if they wanted anything. By the middle of the flight, Isabelle was fast asleep, leaning against Laura’s shoulder, while Laura was listening to her iPod and looking out the window.
She kept wondering if living in a new city would change her, and if she’d ever be able to see her friends again. But, those were questions that she had no way of answering at the moment, since they were still high up in the clouds.
Suddenly, the plane started shaking, making Laura bounce in her seat. “Please attach your seatbelts. We are hitting a bit of turbulence,” the young lady said through the speakers. Laura quickly tied her seatbelt, along with Isabelle’s, who had just woken up due to the shaking.
The plane kept on shaking during almost 30 minutes, and everybody was getting extremely worried. Isabelle was holding on tightly to her teddy bear and to Laura’s arm for support, her eyes wide with fear.
Finally, the plane stopped shaking. But, only a few seconds later, when everybody had let out a sigh of relief, the plane started shooting down towards the ground at an alarming speed. Everybody started panicking, screaming, as the masks dropped from overhead.
“Security procedures! Security procedures everyone!” The flight attendant screamed as she walked rapidly past everybody.
Laura started panicking. What was she supposed to do? She hadn’t listened to the security procedures at the beginning of the plane ride, so she had no idea what to do. “Help! Someone, please help!” She screamed, hoping to get someone’s attention, but everybody was too busy to pay attention to her, and her voice could be barely heard over the screams of all the other passengers on the plane.
A boy with black hair suddenly appeared beside her sister and said, “Here, I’ll help you.” He quickly attached one of the masks on Isabelle.
“Thank you so much,” Laura said. The boy just smiled before he attached her mask, and then ran off to his seat. Laura thought she had seen that boy somewhere before, but she had no time to think about where she might of seen him.
“Brace yourselves for impact!” The young lady screamed as she ran back towards the front of the plane.
Laura immediately grabbed Isabelle and ducked down. Her heart was beating at a thousand miles per hour, and her entire body was shaking from fear of what was going to happen. Only 30 minutes ago, they had all been fine, and now suddenly everything went from bad to worst.
The plane suddenly hit the ground, causing everybody to lurch backwards violently, but it just kept on going forwards, something continuously hitting it around the sides. Laura just kept on holding Isabelle tighter, her eyes pinched shut as she silently prayed for that they all get out alive.
She could hear screeching metal all around her, but she had no idea what it meant, and what was happening to the plane. The plane suddenly stopped moving as it hit something hard in the front. Everybody slowly looked up, and the sight they saw was… incredible. There were rips on all sides of the plane because of rocks and massive tree branches that had been able to pierce through the metal. The entire front of the plane was crushed by the impact. People were lying on the ground, some bleeding, and some unconscious. Others were trapped under seats or pieces of metal that had broken from the plane.
Laura was in complete shock as she slowly looked around. Some people were already standing up and trying to help those in need, or were rushing towards the door to escape. Suddenly, a huge explosion could be heard outside, as well as some screams, and the plane shook violently, before stopping only a few seconds later.
Laura looked out the window, and could see a huge fire burning outside. She could smell a bit of gas, and it was obvious what had caused the huge fire. As everybody else started to panic, running around to everybody in need or trying to find an exit, Laura just sat there, numb. She closed her eyes for a second, hoping that this was all a horrible nightmare, and when she would open them she would be back at home. But, when she opened them, the same awful sight surrounded her.
Laura knew that they had to get out, and fast. She immediately untied her seat belt, as well as Isabelle’s, and picked Isabelle up in her arms. She struggled through all the metal and seats that were littering the floor, trying to get herself to an exit as fast as possible. That’s when she heard a small voice saying, “Help me, please. Help.”
Laura looked around for the voice, and saw a young boy trapped under a huge piece of metal. She immediately gave up her plan to find an exit, knowing she had to help this poor little boy. She put Isabelle down beside her and kneeled down beside the boy. “Don’t worry, I’m going to help you.” She grabbed one side of the broken metal and started pulling up as hard as she could, but it didn’t move a bit. She tried again, and again, and again, but she just didn’t seem to be strong enough. On her 7th try, when she was just about to give up, she was able to lift the metal enough off the ground so that the little boy could slip out from under it.
“Thank you,” he said quickly before running away, climbing over the pieces of the plane still littering the floor.
Laura quickly got up off the floor and looked around the plane. She was one of the last people there. Almost everybody else had already been able to escape, or else, they had been left there for dead. She knew she had to work fast, so she immediately started pushing her way towards an open exit.
The first door she tried was blocked by the huge fire raging outside, and so were the next few escape routes she tried. But, she knew she couldn’t give up, and she kept on looking around for a way to escape.
The smoke inside the plane was getting thicker and thicker. She was having problems breathing. Isabelle, who was still in her arms, was coughing loudly, and she wasn’t sure how much longer they would be able to keep going, and if they would even be able to find an open exit. It seemed like the fire had surrounded the plane, stopping all escape.
She kept on going, pushing pieces of metal aside as she kept on looking around the plane. There just had to be at least one way to escape, or else, how did everybody else get out of the plane. Her movements were getting slower, and her breathing was coming out with horrible wheezing noises. Isabelle was barely moving in her arms, and she was afraid her sister might not make it if they escaped.
Laura dropped to the ground, unable to keep going. She was ready to just give up and accept her faith. Tears rolled down her cheeks. She didn’t want to die, not that way. There was so much more she wanted to do in life, so many dreams she had. Now, everything was ruined because of one plane ride.
Her eyes slowly started to close, and she knew that these were her last seconds on this earth. Strong arms suddenly wrapped around. She wasn’t sure if she was just imagining it or not, but she could hear some voices around her.
“Come on, we have to get out of here fast,” a guy’s voice said.
Her eyes were still partially open, but everything was a blur around her. She didn’t know what was happening. All she could hear were footsteps, and the sound of screeching metal.
Suddenly, she was hit with a huge burst of fresh air that filled her lungs, sending a huge shock through her body. She gasped loudly, then her eyes shut completely.
I know it's a very long chapter, but there was just so much that I wanted to happen in this chapter, and I couldn't find anywhere to cut it.
