Chapter one!
I woke up to the sound of my alarm at 6 in the morning. Junior year was here, but I wasn’t as excited as I thought I would be. No longer a freshman or sophomore, but still somewhat of a child. Why wasn’t I excited? My mom decided to move to New Jersey in a spur of the moment kind of thing. After my dad left us, she was always moping and I was glad to see her do something she wanted to do. And with that, I was going to a new high school. I left my best friend Julia behind in Ohio and there was nothing I could do about it. She’d been my best friend since 6th grade.
Before I left she gave me a bracelet for luck. She said that maybe I’d be better in Jersey. I doubted her, but Julia was usually right about things. “Remember to call me.” She had said with a tear rolling down her check. “I will.” I smiled at her, feeling a rush of tears coming on.
The only thing I was excited about was getting a fresh start. In New Jersey no one knew my name. Which could be seen as a good thing, if you really think about it.
As I was getting ready I decided to make the best of this. I straightened my hair, wore my cutest outfit, and had my mom drive me to school. I was not about to sit on the bus, in fear of sitting alone. Morris High School really wasn’t that big, but I knew I was going to get lost. I got out of the car and said bye to my mom without looking back. No fear, I told myself.
I picked up my schedule in the office and my cl*CENSORED* were pretty typical. Algebra II, history, English, Spanish, biology, and art. I guess they had just placed me where I fit. All my information was on my schedule and lucky for me they included a map. I went to go find my locker, starting down at my map.
Suddenly, I was on the floor next to a very cute guy.
“Sorry,” I said quickly, “I’m new.” I scrambled to pick up my things.
“I figured, you’re using a map,” cute guy said. I laughed and looked away, embarrassed.
“My name is Joe,” he introduced himself, giving me his hand to help me up. I ran my fingers though my hair, embarrassed.
“I’m Iris. I better go if I want to make it to any of my cl*CENSORED*, since I can’ t even find my locker, ah this is ridiculous.” I replied.
“Let me see your schedule, maybe I can help you out.”
He took my schedule and looked it over. I knew I was blushing I could feel it. To add to that people were looking at me like some kind of freak. I saw them whispering, pointing, I was drawing attention to myself, great.
“We have everything except art and our lockers are near each other. I will be your tour guide, let me show you around!”
And with that he put his hand around my shoulder showing me where my locker was. I couldn’t even comprehend what was going on. Cute guy, Joe, was showing me around. A guy, let alone a cute guy, was talking to me, putting his arm around me, noticing me! I was starting to like Morris High School.
Except for the going to class thing, that was the bad part. The first few days of school are always the same. The teachers tell you the rules. Respect others, no chewing gum, and of course we have to raise our hands if we want to be heard. But even if you don’t raise your hand they yell at you, so I guess they do hear you. You’d think after about 10 years of going to school we’d know this stuff. I guess they don’t communicate with other people.
Joe passed me a note. He touched my hand. I almost died.
“Hey I forgot to ask you, where are you from? And do you live in the neighborhood?”
I wrote back quickly, but then realized I seemed too anxious.
“I’m from Ohio. I live in North Crestwood.”
“Cool, me too, maybe we can hang out? So, you know, I can show you around.”
On the third day of school he was already asking me to hang out? I didn’t want to sound too eager, but..
“Definitely!”
…too late.
After history it was time for lunch. Where to sit, where to sit. I saw a girl wave her hand at me so I went over to her.
“Hi, I’m Alexis.” She said to me.
“I’m Iris..I’m new, but you probably knew that. Not my name, but the fact that I’m new.”
She laughed and told me all about Morris High. Alexis was one of the popular girls, I could immediately tell. She was gorgeous and people stared at her. It’s like she walks into a room and she’s the center of attention. She said she thought I was funny, but I’m not. I just come off as funny because I can be sarcastic.
“Oh, I forgot to introduce you to everyone!”
“That’s Madison, that’s Courtney, and that’s Ashlee.” I smiled at them. This was obviously her clique. There were a lot of cliques in this school. I could tell.
Alexis and I hit it off immediately. She said she saw me with cute guy, I er, mean Joe, earlier. She said I should watch out for this girl named Erin, that she has a crush on him and her friends Sarah and Olivia would back her up. They were the “mean girl” clique. “Great.” I thought to myself.
I learned that Joe’s well known around the school. That explains the stares. At the end of the day, I had gotten a lot of them too. “Did you hear about the new girl?” I would hear all day. But I don’t blame them, I was raw meat and was bound to be picked on, but truth be told I didn’t hear anything negative. But I did hear “Did you see her and Joe talking, what’s up with that?” Erin gave me a smile, but her eyes were anything but friendly.
Okay, so I know the first chapter was kind of... dry. But it'll get better. I promise!
