Chapter 2;;
The front doors chimed as the boys stepped inside. Neither one of them bothered to remove the various styles of sunglasses they each wore. It was like they were trying to hide their identity.
“Wow” was all Niki managed to make out as they rummaged through the things looking for a snack.
Niki continued to stock items until one boy walked up to her. He slowly pulled down his glasses shooting her a look.
“Well, hello there” he said through an overly flirtatious smile.
“Hi” she said as a blush surged through her cheeks.
Overwhelmed by his gorgeous eyes and his perfectly styled hair, she started dropping items from her hands, fumbling around, ultimately blushing even more from the embarrassment that rushed through her body.
“Here, let me help you with that” he said laughing as he bent down to pick up the candy bars she had dropped.
“Thanks…” she said staring at his perfectly toned arms, flexing as he grabbed the items.
She could feel her body melting and her heart throbbing as he started up another conversation. The two stood there flirting back and forth, chatting about things they liked, and of course he asked endless questions about Niki.
“Joe, we are leaving soon” another curly haired boy said as he walked buy holding the hand of a younger girl.
Joe stood in his place and rolled his eyes, continuing to talk to Niki. The oldest of the group marched up to the counter to go ahead and pay.
“Hi” Tina said as she started punching in numbers on the old fashioned register.
Kevin stood before her, eyes twinkling, and didn’t say a word.
“Okay…” she mumbled, as she went on punching in prices.
There was something about her. He started to take in all her features. He noticed she wasn’t a gorgeous girl, the ones he would see everyday out in Hollywood. But she had a quiet beauty to her. Something about the way she smiled or how she did her hair, the simple clothes she wore, and the way she was just, simple.
“Is this all?” she questioned breaking his train of thought.
He snapped back to reality, stumbling over his words.
“Uh… and whatever ladies man over there is getting” he said as she stifled a laugh.
“Niki!” she hollered breaking the flirtatious cycle between the two.
“Oh, sorry Tina!” she yelled back.
“I think that guy you’re with is ready to go” she said as he grabbed at one of the candy bars he helped put away.
He tossed it to Kevin at the counter, who surprisingly caught it, and turned back to Tina.
“Here you go” he said smiling.
She didn’t notice the way he looked at her, or the words he said through the smiles he flashed her. She hadn’t been around boys in awhile. She stayed in her small town, and didn’t plan on leaving. She hadn’t dated since Erica was born, and living her life that way for the next 4 years was all she was accustomed to.
“Your total is $14.05” she told him as he pulled out a card, sliding it in her direction.
“Oh, sorry, we don’t take cards. Small town, you know how it goes” she said sliding it back towards him.
“No problem” he noted as he pulled out a twenty-dollar bill.
After he finished paying, he gathered the things, threw her one last smile, and walked through the doors with Nick and the girl holding on to his hand.
Niki was still batting her eyelashes and laughing at the jokes the boy was telling her, before the girl walked back through the door.
“JOE! Let’s go! Now!” she scolded, even though it was obvious she was much younger than him.
“I’m coming Brit, chill!” he yelled back, not taking the time to look over.
She exited the store once again and Tina watched Niki get all googly-eyed over the boy.
“I guess I’ll see you later” he said pulling her into a hug.
He walked backwards, keeping his eyes on Niki. Smiling and winking, and continuing to flirt, until he walked himself into the door. Niki, of course, chuckled to herself, as the boy behind the glasses grew red. He turned around, pushing open the door, and Niki yelled bye one last time. Tina just rolled her eyes and went back to work.
