Vienna
[One Shot]
The day’s last one-way
Ticket train pulls in
We smile for the casual
Closure capturing
There goes the downpour
Here goes my fair thee well
She stood on the cobblestone sidewalk, luggage in hand. He wilted in front of her, tears streaming down his face that he prayed she couldn’t see through the rain.
“Goodbye, Joseph,” she whispered.
He faked a smile and wrapped his arms around her one last time before she stepped on the train, leaving him behind.
There’s really no way to reach me
‘Cause I’m already gone
He called her each and every night, slowly dying just to hear the sweetness in her voice. She would answer, with only a few minutes to chat. He knew those few minutes weren’t enough, but he savored every moment he had with her, ending each conversation with three short words.
“I love you.”
Only so many words
That we can say
Spoken upon
Long-distance melody
This is my hello
This is my goodness
She would repeat them back to him occasionally, but he got to hear them less and less when she began to stop answering his calls.
He tried calling her one evening, even if she could only talk for a few seconds. His heart broke when the automatic message machine replied, “That number has been disconnected.”
There’s really no way to reach me
‘Cause I’m already gone
He eventually gave up. She had forgotten, he decided, so he might as well move on with his life. His brothers were there when he needed a good cry, but nothing could compare to her gentle touch, the way her golden locks fell perfectly atop her shoulders, the calm way she slept in his arms.
Secretly he hoped that she would come back one day, running into his arms, apologizing for all the hurt she caused him.
Maybe in five or ten
Yours and mine will meet again
Straighten this whole thing out
Maybe then honesty need
Not be feared as a friend or an enemy
This is the distance
And this is my game face
He played show after show each evening, for his amazing fans that had been there for him through everything. He gave his all into each and every performance, still yearning to be in her presence once more.
He ran off stage after a show in his hometown, the energy from the crowd still running through his veins. He was just about to step onto the bus he shared with his brothers when he heard that voice, that voice he had missed for all those years.
“Joe?”
He stopped and turned around. She looked different, he thought, taking the entire of her in, but she was still the same girl he fell in love, the same girl he was still in love with.
Slowly, in disbelief that it was actually her, he ran into her arms. He knew it wasn’t the appropriate way to greet her, but he didn’t care. He needed to feel that soft touch, and smell that warm vanilla on her skin.
She resisted at first, then surrendered to his warmth, the warmth she knew she had missed, whether she would admit it or not.
He smiled at the fact that everything was perfect again, until she spoke.
As quick as she was there, she was gone again, for good, leaving him alone with his tears.
There’s really no way to reach me
Is there really no way to reach me?
Am I already gone?
. He prayed, Dear God, please help me to let go. She’s not coming back this time, and I need to let her go, no matter how difficult it is. He looked up to the sky and watched for some kind of sign that would let him know he would be okay.
He stood, drenched in his tears, when the rain began to pour. He spread his arms and let it fall, washing away everything from his past, especially her.
But no matter how he tried, he would always keep a place for her in his heart.
So this is your maverick
This is Vienna.
