Chapter 2
The Jonas Brothers. In the barn that I work at. Staying for a week. I think I am going to hyperventilate. I staggered back into Ryan’s office and stared at him, speechless.
“Well?” he said. “Do you think you can stay?” Ryan smirked at me. “They’re even cuter in person, aren’t they?”
“Uh huh…” I said. I couldn’t believe it. Just a couple hours ago I was complaining about not being able to see them in concert, probably in some seat way up in the top section where you could hardly tell what shirt they were wearing let alone their faces. And now they were staying with Ryan. Oh God, they were staying with Ryan.
“I’m gonna call my mom and tell her that I’m staying with you for a while!” I said quickly, snapping out of my trance. I had to make sure Ryan didn’t make a fool of himself in front of the Jonas family.
“Great!” Ryan replied gleefully. “Wanna come with me while I show them their rooms? Oh, and meet them I guess…” he added. Meet them. Wow.
“Ok, how do I look?” I asked Ryan quickly.
He looked me up, and down.
“Like you’ve been working in a dirty horse barn all morning.” He said. Great.
I tried to fix my hair while I followed Ryan out of his office. Now I’m not exactly what you would call ‘stunningly beautiful’ and I’m not really the kind of girl who would make heads turn, but I like to think that I’m not hideous anyways. I have straight brown hair that comes to just below my shoulders, and I have a fairly dark complexion. I am defiantly not pale, and the one thing I adore about myself is that I tan really easily, especially after spending days outside riding in the sun. and all the working at a farm puts me in really good shape as well. But still, I’m actually meeting the Jonas Brothers. Ok I thought to myself, I’ve got to be cool about this. No groveling fans no “omg, I love your music!!!” or anything. Just, be cool. We walked into the main aisle of the barn and I faltered for just a step. There they were. His mom, I was assuming, was holding Frankie’s hand that was pulling, trying to look into the stall closest to him. A man whom I also assumed was their father was talking quietly to their mom. Kevin was gazing at the barn around him, looking mildly interested. Nick was standing there looking like he was trying not to touch anything, and actually looked pretty funny. And Joe was picking his nose. I’m not even joking. Well, maybe he was just scratching, but it looked like he was picking it. As Ryan and I approached he whipped his hand into his pocket like nothing happened. Ew.
“Hi!” Ryan said brightly as we walked up. “I’m Ryan. This is Deseray, she’s one of my employees who is also actually staying with me for a while.” I grinned at them.
“Nice to meet you,” I said.
“Hello,” Mamma J said. She held out her hand. “I’m Denise. This is my husband Kevin,” she indicated the man standing next to here, “and these are my sons, Frankie, Kevin Jr., Joseph and Nicholas.” She pointed to each of her sons as she named them off. Kevin grinned and nodded, Joe smiled at me, Nick gave me a weak smile and Frankie said “I wanna ride a pony!” we all laughed. Ryan was defiantly right about one thing; they were way cuter in person.
“Maybe we’ll get you up on a pony before you have to go…” Ryan said to him. “Now, let me show you where you’ll be staying for the next couple of days.” Ryan started to walk towards the house. “Oh, and Des, could you please do night feed for me?” he said over his shoulder, as he walked off.
“Sure, no problem…” I grumbled. So much for getting to know the Jonas Brothers.
“Boys, why don’t you give her a hand?” Denise said to them. “It’ll do you some good to put in some hard work for once.”
“Oh, but mom, I have to uh… unpack my stuff…” Nick said quickly.
“Nonsense, Rob hasn’t even brought it up form the bus yet. And if you help Deseray, then you’ll be done faster and we can eat dinner. By the way Ryan, I would be more than happy to cook for you tonight, you’ve been so kind to us…” she, Kevin Sr. and Frankie followed Ryan up to the house, leaving Kevin, Nick and Joe standing next to me.
“So…” Joe said. “What do we have to do?” well this was awkward. How am I supposed to tell the Jonas Brothers that they have to work with me??
“Well,” I said, “You don’t really have to help if you don’t want to, I mean, I usually do it by myself anyway…”
“Great!” Nick said, “I’ll go help Rob unpack!” and he ran off.
“Don’t mind Nick, he’s a bit of a priss when it comes to dirt and stuff. He hates getting his hands dirty.” Kevin said, grinning. He sure does grin a lot. “But Joe and I’ll be happy to help, right Joseph?”
“Ya just tell me what to do and I’ll do it!”
“Ok, well, if you want to do water, Kevin, you just use the taps on the wall to fill the horse’s buckets, then Joe and I can go get hay to feed them.” I said.
“Sounds good!” Kevin walked to the end of the aisle to start watering the horses.
“Come on Joe, I’ll show you where the hay is.” I walked off towards the hayloft.
“Ooooo a hayloft. I’ve always wanted to climb in one of those…” Joe said. He followed me over, bouncing up and down.
“Trust me; it’s not all that exciting.” I said laughing. I climbed up the ladder and tossed down a bale of hay. “Go get one of those wheelbarrows, and you can put the hay in there, I instructed Joe. He skipped over, and put the hay in it and started to push it back towards the barn.
“Hey! Where are you going?” I shouted from the hayloft.
“Uhh, to feed the horses?” he asked.
“Noooo, we can fit two more bales on that wheelbarrow!”
“Oh. Well then, you can push it.” He said. “I’m gonna sit here and watch.
I laughed at him. “Not such a tough guy after all, huh?” I said as I tossed down another bale.
“Nope. I’ll admit it, I’m a weakling.” Joe said.
I laughed again and jumped down form the hayloft. I piled the other two bales on top of the first one and started pushing the wheelbarrow back up towards the barn.
“So have you ever been around horses before?” I asked Joe
“No, I’m not much of an animal-lover type person…” he said, smirking at me. God he was cute… no, stop it!! My mind scolded, you’re supposed to be cool about this… Right. Cool. I can do that…
“Ok, so basically, just give every horse a flake of hay. You can just chuck it in the door…” I said to him, dumping the bales of hay on the ground. I grabbed some scissors and opened the first bale.
“Wait, you mean, like, in the stall?!?” Joe said. He looked panicky. What was his problem?
“Well, ya, you don’t have to actually go in the stall, but you have to open the door to get the hay in the stall…” I gave him a ‘what's the problem’ look.
Joe looked at the horse in the stall next to him. “What’s this horse’s name?” he asked.
“That’s Thunder.” I said. Joe looked at him again.
“He’s not gonna, like, hurt me or anything, right?” he asked warily. Thunder snorted at him. “Is that a yes or a no?” he said, turning to me.
“That was a ‘give me my food, you bastard, I’m hungry!” I said, giggling
Joe laughed nervously and reached for the stall door. He opened it, threw the hay in and slammed the door shut in a matter of about 2 seconds. Seriously.
“See, that wasn’t so hard, was it?” I said, trying to suppress my giggles.
“Shut-up…” Joe said blushing, but he smiled too. We continued feeding the horses and were about half done when Kevin came and found us and told us that he was done and was going up to the house. It took us about half an hour to finish feeding all 45 horses, and when we were done Joe asked for a tour of the barn.
“Don’t you think we should wait and give your whole family the grand tour?” I asked. I was cleaning up Ryan’s office; it was always such a mess. Honestly, if I wasn’t there to clean up after him, the whole barn would be a complete pig sty.
“Ya, I guess.” Joe said. “So do you spend a lot of time here?” he asked, looking at the many pictures on the wall. Ryan had a picture of probably every horse and rider that passed through this barn on that wall. I’m sure you can imagine that it was pretty packed with pictures.
“Ya, I try to ride my horse every day and I work 3 days a week,” I answered, trying to decide if the envelope I was looking at was important or not…
“Whoa, that’s a long time. How can you like something that much?” he asked, looking over at me.
“Well, how do you sing all the time, and go on tour for 6 months?” I asked, grinning.
“Touché…” he agreed, smiling back at me. This was not good. I was flirting with this guy who probably half of North America was in love with and was also the cutest/funniest/hottest pop star around right now. And I was falling head over heels for him.
“So what do you say to seeing what Mamma J has cooked up for us for dinner tonight?” he said suddenly, heading for the door.
“Sure,” I said, leaving the envelopes on Ryan’s desk. He could clean it himself later. I would force him to do it.
“I just have to turn out the lights,” I called to Joe as he headed for the exit.
“Ok,” he said. “I’ll just, wait over here.”
I hurried down to the opposite end of the aisle where the light switches were. Whoever designed this barn was either really stupid or really enjoyed finding their way in the dark.
I made my way back towards the exit in pitch black, trying to find the door to go outside. Suddenly, I collided with something surprisingly hard. And warm.
“Ooff, sorry,” I muttered against Joe’s chest. *CENSORED*. He smelled so good. Like, Old spice aftershave and something muskier, but I couldn’t really tell what it was.
“No problem,” Joe said, holding me to him. Wow, if there was ever a moment to quote Joe, this would be it.
“Awkward!” we both said at the same time. Giggling, he finally released me and I took his hand and led him to where I thought the door was. Now this was something I could defiantly deal with.
