Now Until Forever

    “I want to fight for you, but you’re never there to fight for!”  A teenage girl was talking to her boyfriend, face to face, for the first time in months. Her bright blue eyes were filled with tears, she didn’t think it would be this hard.
    They missed each other terribly while Nick was away on tour with his brothers. That was one thing that drew Nick to Shannon, she could handle his insane schedule, or at least she used to.         Before the Jonas Brothers, Nick’s band made of him and his two older brothers, Joe and Kevin, were popular, Nick had met Shannon into a music shop. Joe, Nick, and Kevin were standing in the pop section of the place, holding a bright red CD. Shannon, in the store with her mother, tried to get closer to see what CD it was. As Nick turned around he ran into her, and they both fell over.
    Nick and Shannon started to date, and as their liking for each other grew, so did the popularity of the band. Shannon promised, from the beginning, to be by Nick’s side through everything, no matter what happened to band. She attended as many shows as she could, which were all the ones in the states bordering hers. Nick even flew her out to California for a week so they could spend time together.
    There was no doubt that these two, at the young age of 15, had found love in each other. Everyone could see it. Nick never denied it when asked in interviews, which, to some fans, was sweet. Even when the rumors about Nick dating Miley Cyrus started to spread around, Shannon stood by Nick, and trusted him with all that she was.
    It was getting harder all the time to see Nick, what with Shannon’s school schedule, Nick being on a nationwide, sold-out tour, and how these two schedules clashed. Shannon started seeing Nick less and less, and was getting sad. She loved Nick, and he loved her, but there was just the one issue of scheduling.
    Nick made a special trip to see Shannon. She was in school until 1:30 and she got home around 2:00, so Nick thought he would surprise her at her house and bring her out to dinner. He had worked out all the details with Shannon’s mother, and of course she said it was all right. He arrived at her house at 1:45, carrying a bouquet of red roses. He was wearing a black suit, with a red undershirt and white tie. He walked up to her room nervously and waited.
    “Mom, I’m home.” Shannon walked through the front door to see her mom vacuuming the living room. She looked up and smiled, then got back to work. Her mother was like that, a neat freak, she vacuumed almost everyday. It made Shannon laugh to see the house so clean, and her room a mess. Although, she did just clean her room the day before.
    She walked up the stairs slowly, her legs ached from P.E today. She opened the door, set her backpack downed, and squealed when she saw him. She ran over to him and gave him a hug. She never wanted to let go. When they pulled apart, Nick gave her the flowers and kissed her. He had been longing to do that for three months now. Tears formed in Shannon’s eyes. Sure, they had talked on the phone constantly, and e-mailed like crazy, but her emotions got the best of her when she finally got to see him.
    “I’m so glad you’re here.” She pecked him on the cheek then walked into her bathroom, pulled a vase from the cupboard and filled it up. Nick walked in after her, he couldn’t believe how beautiful she was. It’s not like she had changed, but looking at the same picture everyday for the past twelve weeks, then seeing her now, Nick spotted changes. Her hair was slightly longer, and lighter, and her smile seemed brighter than ever.
    They were so happy to be with each other, that Nick almost forgot about the limo outside. Shannon changed into an outfit more suitable for dinner, then they were off. This wasn’t her first time in a limo, but every time she was in one, she was amazed. Nick took her into the city for dinner. The whole ride they talked about everything, how they were, school, shows, music. It was perfect. They got to the restaurant, and Shannon was surprised to see that it was empty.
    “I reserved it just for us.” He said as they walked hand and hand to the candlelit table. Nick, being the gentlemen that he was, pulled out Shannon’s chair for her, and then sat down. The night was going perfect.
    “This is so romantic Nick, and they say Kevin’s the romantic one.” Nick laughed, she always had a way of doing that to him. He smiled and laughed with her more than anyone. He really did love her.
    Nick’s phone rang halfway through dessert. He looked at it, put it on vibrate and put it away. “Who was that?” Shannon asked.
    “No one important.” Nick said. His phone buzzed in his pocket. It must be urgent, as it kept buzzing. “I’m really sorry Shannon, but I have to answer this.” He sounded irritated.
    “Miley, what do you want? I’m with Shannon, can’t it wait?”
    Miley told Nick that her dad and sister had been in a car accident, and that she needed him there for support. Nick refused to go, but Miley sounded like she really needed it. Nick finally decided to cut the date short, hoping that he could go out with Shannon tomorrow.
    “Shannon, I have to go. It’s Miley” Shannon looked mad and sad. She trusted Nick, but he’s blowing off the only time she gets to spend with him to be with her. She was not happy.
    “Okay, when are you coming back to town?” She asked. He could hear disappointment in her voice.
    “Tomorrow I hope. But I really have to go.” She wasn’t finished with Nick, she wanted to talk to him about their relationship, and where it was going from here.
    “Nick, wait, we need to talk.” Nick’s face fell, he dreaded the day where he’d have to hear those four words.  He sat back down and waited for her to continue.
    “You know I love you Nick, I always will, but this just isn’t working for us.” She tried to hold back tears. “I never see you anymore. I feel bad because you have me to hold you back from things that you want.”
    “I don’t want other things! I want you! I need you.” He protested. He was having trouble holding back his emotions. She was all he ever dreamed of, and all that he ever wanted. How was he supposed to react?
    “I know, but sometimes just saying it doesn’t help. Nick, I never see you anymore, I’m lucky if I see you three times a year. Relationships aren’t meant to be like this. Sometimes love isn’t enough.” She tried to hide her tears but it was useless.
    Nick couldn’t hold it back, she her cry broke him, he started to cry. “You said you understood that I couldn’t be there, you said you’d be by my side no matter what. You promised Shannon. You said you’d fight for us to be together”
    “I want to fight for you, but you’re never there to fight for!” She finally said it, what she had been thinking forever. Tears filled both of their eyes. It was silent for several minutes. Both consumed in their thoughts.
    “People change and promises are broken.” Nick was angry. He got up, paid for the meal, called a taxi, leaving Shannon with the limo, and left.
    Shannon couldn’t handle it. The best thing in her life was gone, forever. It was all her fault. She knew that it was. She rarely promised anyone anything, and the only time she did, she couldn’t keep it. Distraught, she got up and ran out of the building.
    She started running, not knowing where she was going. She wasn’t thinking properly, she ran until she reached the bridge, an idea already formed in her head. She stood on the ledge of the bridge, looking down into the water far below from where she stood. She was prepared to jump. Nick’s voice filled her head, “I love you, babe.” She couldn’t take it.    
    She whispered on last, “I love you Nick,” and jumped into the water. Many people saw. One person actually got out of the vehicle and ran to the edge of the bridge and gazed into the water. No one came up.
    “NO!”  The person was Nick. He saw her jump as the taxi drove over the bridge. Tears filled his eyes. He didn’t care who was around. His first love, gone, forever.
    “Come back! Please come back.” He stayed at the bridge for two hours. He had called his family at the hospital, told them what happened and that he wanted to be alone. He then called the police, letting them know about Shannon. They had not disturbed him when they arrived. Just let him grieve.
    When he decided he was ready to leave, he took off his cross necklace that he always wore, kissed it and threw it into the river. “I promised forever, Shannon, and I meant it.”
    There was a show the night after Shannon died. At the very end of the show, Nick came back out and said, “As most of you know by now, my girlfriend, Shannon, has moved on to a better place. She was the best thing that happened in my life. This ones for her.”
    They then proceeded to sing “Eternity,” Nick cried the whole way through it. He didn’t care. Many people in the audience were crying to. After the song ended, Nick looked up towards Heaven and said, “I love you, babe.”

Not as long as I thought.
