What Love Does To You
I never said I was good at writing a one shot but I've read about 20 zillion in the past five days and thought i would try. This is a song I wrote not to long ago so here you go.
Three young men sat in the front row tears falling down all three’s cheeks but one was clearly more upset than the other two were.
“Now we are here not to remember how young she left us, but to remember how much she affected everyone she met in such a short time. We will never have another young lady as wonderful as her in our lives. Now let us pray,” the pastor says.
They close their eyes, the young men still crying and then he remembers he remembers everything about her.
First second I saw you I wanted your number.
Second day I knew you I needed your hand.
Third time our eyes met I fell in love with you.
But I guess every thing doesn’t go as planned.
Five Years Earlier
He spotted her automatically, it wasn’t hard to she was stunning. He wanted to talk to her to get to know her to get her number and call her the next second. She had this hair that was a shade of dirty blond and eyes that were amazing they were a white blue that automatically caught his eye. She was laughing with a different girl as they walked down the street. He had never seen them before but they walked around with ease talking to the neighbors and eating ice cream smiling. Gawd he wanted her number.
The Next Day
She called herself a klutz, it was a good description of her after all. On the ground looking at the knee she just skinned she frowned. She was a klutz that was for sure. He saw her on the ground and walked over right away. He helped her up with a smile and then there eyes met his own brown eyes purely loving and her eyes smiling up at him. As they stood there was no doubt the connection between the two.
I was just the girl who lived down the street.
You were just the boy I’d always wanted to meet.
Our paths soon crossed and you held me close.
Baby it was perfect but I guess you’ll never know.
I never thought you’d fall in love with me so quick.
I never thought you’d be the one that would stick.
I never thought I’d loose myself to you.
But I guess that’s what love does to you.
He found out not long after she was new to town, so was the girl she was walking with. She lived exactly five houses away, one hundred and twenty-one steps from his front door to hers. Any chance he got he was around her until finally she said yes to a date. Which went perfectly. He couldn’t have asked for a better first date and she couldn’t have wished for a better time.
Fourth date we had you took me dancing.
Fifth moment we shared was so romantic.
Sixth kiss we shared was oh so perfect.
But I guess everything doesn’t go as planned.
Soon the dates became more often, their hearts became entwined she didn’t know if she could let go of him. It was perfection to both parties and both were slightly scared by that. Love so young and so fast was it a good thing? Her smile grew when he was near and he longed for his name from her to hear. They knew it wouldn’t last forever but they had hoped it would last as long as possible. Oh yes this right here was love.
She stayed down the street even after he moved away. It wasn’t the same without him there every day. She didn’t want to tell him just how much she missed having him there. She didn’t want him to know how good it felt to know he cared. He came back as often as possible and tried to keep what they had together. But she soon ended the affair saying, ‘I can’t live with you not here anymore.’
Seventh question from my mouth involved you and me.
Eight tear that fell down my cheek was very plain to see.
Ninth call in ten minutes was to hear your sweet voice.
But I guess everything doesn’t go as planned.
He wondered if she loved him and questioned her softly. Wanted to know if what they had felt was that easy to throw away. She cried and cried as he did the same. He tried to hold her but she turned away. Said she didn’t need him anymore not this day. She ran from him knowing she loved him and that he loved her. She didn’t want to admit it but he was her only one.
It only took him two days to get her back. It only took her two seconds her bags were packed. She went with him away to his new life. And cherished every moment. It wasn’t long before they were joined at the alter until death do them part. He hadn’t known it was that first day he had stolen her heart. She loved him through fights, through scares, and through tears. She loved him the most for over five years. She didn’t know what would happen when she went in that day. She didn’t know about the words she’d last here him say.
Tenth word from your mouth that day was I love you.
Eleventh person to call me made me believe it was true.
Twelveth hour by you side and you took one last breathe.
But I guess everything doesn’t go as planned.
When there is hate and death.
A kiss on her lips and a baby I’m so proud. She smiled weakly as the baby cried loud. He left the room and told all with joy. About his wife and his daughter no it wasn’t a boy. The panic set in as the doctors all ran. From his wife’s room with the baby in hand. More panic hit home as he heard the long beep. But from his gorgeous wife there was not a peep. The doctors they saved her, but only for a brief time. He kissed her, and told her he loved her just one last time. The monitors gave way. And she was lost that day.
Present Day
I was just the girl who lived down the street.
You were just the boy I’d always wanted to meet.
Our paths soon crossed and you held me close.
Baby it was perfect but I guess you’ll never know.
I never thought we’d fall in love with each other so quick.
I never thought you’d be the one that would stick.
I never thought I’d loose myself to you.
I never thought I’d loose you it’s true.
But I guess that’s what love does to you.
A cry from his arms caused a smile on his face. If there was one girl he would also love it was his little girl Kate. Named for her mother the love of his life. With her father’s black hair and her mother white blue eyes. He knew it wouldn’t be long 'til there was no stop to the cries. They all stood in tears as they said their good byes. And he watched his wife be lowered to the ground.
“Kate I’ll love you 'til the day I die,” he whispered and dropped a flower to the dirt.
“Daddy why is Uncle Joe sad,” a boy asks tugging his father’s shirt?
She was barely 22 when her heart had stopped that one day. He knew by holding on it was her way to say. I love you to death, baby you know it’s true, cause that’s what love does to you. One last look at the headstone filled with their name and one more tear falling from his cheek. He knew he would never be the same.
