Anybody that thought I was a really shy, quiet, loner type of person; had obviously never gone to the mall with me. Jennifer, Madison, Lindsey and I stood out like a sore thumb more than we usually did tonight. But when you are wearing multi-colored tutus, skinny jeans, sharpie-colored converse and vans, layers of hugely beaded necklaces, awesome tees, and “rainbow” make-up, how can you NOT stand out?
As normal, we had people giving us numerous types of looks, our favorite of them all being the, “Is-the-circus-in-town?” look. We didn’t care though. We would rather be hated for who we are than loved for whom we are not. These girls were my besties, and there was no doubt about that. We’ve known each other since we were pooping in our diapers, and have grown to love one another more and more every day.
So you have no idea how much it killed me to keep my secret from them.
We walked into Hot Topic before anything, quickly dispersing through the store to see what new amazing things they had for us to buy that day. I immediately found the coolest eye shadow and nail polish ever, while Jennifer was obsessing over the new rainbow colored Vans. Both Madison and Lindsey were chatting away with the store owners like they do every weekend. The store owner’s names were Jake and Bob. Yes, Bob. We made fun of the poor guy for weekends on end about his name, but it soon grew to become old. But, we still teased him every once in a while.
Jennifer and I made our way over to the guys, and slammed Jenny’s pair of shoes, and my few items of neon colored make-up on the check-out counter. We both smiled big grins and said, “Yo! Yo! Yo! It’s Mr. Bobby and Jakers! What’s shakin’ bakin’?” They replied back with a roll of their eyes and a simple, “We’re in Hot Topic shoutin’ Jenn-ay-ay! Jenn-ay ay!” This was a normal routine of ours. We had little rhymes for them, and they had their own for us. Before Jake and Bob could continue on with my personal rhyme for my name, Jeremy, another employee at the store, came out and finished my name rhyme for Jake and Bob by saying, “Shanna Shannah bo bana, banana nana fo fana, me mi mo mana, SHANNA!” I smiled at his voice. Jeremy started working at Hot Topic about 2 weeks ago, and he had instantly become my favorite guy working there when I met him. With his sexy voice, nice, toned body, and amazing black, with blue streaks hair, there wasn’t anything to not love! We constantly had a flirt fest going on between us, and I could tell it annoyed the crap out of Jake and Bob, but they always forgave the two of us in the end. We were both major flirts, but we never went farther than flirting, because you can just tell that he’s a player. As I stared into his eyes, I quickly reminded myself of another ‘rule’.
Rule of Love #4: When you go to the mall, or any other public place, feel free to “shop around” for guys, but never “buy”, because they’re probably just a player or some pervert that wants to get you in bed.
(This rule I had a little bit of a personal incite on, because I met David in a Starbucks.)
We talked to the guys for a while, just having conversations about the usual. What movie we were there to see that night, how sales are going, drama at our school, and the work life for them. We were having a really great time, until we were interrupted by someone clearing their throat.
Knowing clumsy me, I turned around to see who it was, and I knocked into the person. It turns out he was standing right behind me and nobody bothered to warn me.
I had accidentally knocked everything he was holding out of his arms, and I felt really bad about it. I was about to say I was sorry when he said, “Watch where you’re going you stupid hoe.”
That’s it.
All my sympathy washed away that very second.
My anger overcame me, and I snapped back at the boy, “You know, I was going to help you and tell you I was sorry, but that rude remark you just made helped change my mind.”
He looked up from where he was squatting on the floor, and his eyes met mine.
I could tell through his chocolaty brown eyes that this boy was pissed, and there was no doubt about that. I’m pretty sure my eyes were giving him the same vibe. We stared at each other for a very long time, until Jennifer broke the silence by saying, “Come on Shanna let’s go. Forget about it.”
I was definitely not about to forget about this. This boy, whatever his *CENSORED*ing name was; was undoubtedly going on my, “most hated” list. Once people cross me the wrong way, there’s no getting out of it. You are going to be hated for the rest of your life by me.
As we made our way out of the store, I couldn’t help but look back at the jerk and give him my evil eye. I just wanted him to suffer for calling me a hoe for me bumping into him.
But when I turned around, instead of seeing the boy that just called me a hoe, and was extremely mean; I saw a very cute, brown, curly haired boy that looked nothing but hurt.
In that instant, my hatred for him turned back to sympathy. He looked up at me, and he looked like he was on the verge of tears. Right then and there, I felt as if I could sense his pain and he could sense mine.
There was no doubt in my mind that I would be running into this kid again sooner than I thought.
