Living On The Edge[water, that is] [[a joint]]

backstory;;

"Joseph. Gather your brothers." Mrs. Jonas’s strict voice ordered and Joe obeyed, scampering off to round up his siblings. Usually, when his mother acted like this, something serious was up. What had he done in the last few days? Broken his grandmother’s lamp, sure, it wasn’t that bad. Ripped Nick’s favorite shirt, broke a string on Kevin’s guitar. What could he have possibly done this time?

They sat in awkward silence with their parents, as they had told Frankie to leave them to talk. Before Frankie had left, he turned to his brothers and grinned, exclaiming, "Ohhh, you guys are in TROUBLE." Joe stuck his tongue out, sulking on the chair he’d been sitting in.

"Boys. We... have something to tell you." Mrs. Jonas sighed, looking at her husband for support. He nodded, clearing his throat and stepping into the situation.

"You, aren’t our real sons. We adopted you. Your true family lives in Alabama. And as much as you might not want to, you’re going to spend the summer meeting them," It was too much for Joe to handle. He rushed out of the room, as his mother called his name. No where to run, only outside as far away as possible from California. Unfortunately, far away happened to be Edgewater, Alabama. Population? 730.

now;;

What was there to do on a trip to Alabama? Oh yeah- nothing at all. They all looked out the window, dully watching farms pass by. They looked for the Edgewater sign, hopeful that they wouldn’t have to stay any longer in the car. It was cramped and they hadn’t taken the bus. Nick was sleeping on Joe’s shoulder, Joe was complaining to Mandy on his phone, and Kevin played his music much too loud. They’d taken the new SUV, a fancy one that Kevin had been given for his birthday.

No sign of people had shown in 3 hours, except for other cars [long gone by now] and his family. Suddenly, a brown flash, and there was a horse, keeping equal speed next to them. The kids on the stallions grinned, pointing at the car and disappearing in front of it.

"Aw, how quaint. Children riding horses." Their mother muttered, turning back to her Country Living magazine, licking her finger and flipping the page to ‘Modern Chic Designs’.

-x-

"Guys, guys! There’s a fancy car headin’ down the road! I think it’s comin’ to Edgewater!" The excited girl on the back of her brown horse exclaimed, catching the attention of two girls sitting on a rickety fence. One looked up, yawning lightly, wispy brown hairs floating around her head. The other blinked slightly, squinting into the distance.

"You hear that Iris? Visitors!" Jazzlyn excitedly muttered, her mind buzzing with possibilities. Mostly- fancy visitors. Picking up her bottle of lemonade, she waited as her best friend climbed down from fence. They were sore; for that’s what they did all summer. Drink tea and lemonade, sit on the fence with sore bottoms. Jazz stretched, fixing her jean shorts and halter top. It was light colored, with flowers across it. But clothes was the least she wanted to know about.

There was the car, shining in the warm sun as it kicked up dust. People gathered and sat on fences, excited to see who they were. The SUV stopped, and doors opened. Iris’s face fell. 3 boys, dressed up fancy, with expensive clothes. One had an iPod stuck in his hand, simply ignoring the fact people were watching closely. The townspeople twisted their face in disgust. Look at them. They were so fancy, apparently rich. They’d never fit it. They were probably snobs.

The crowd scattered, leaving only Iris and Jazz, sitting on a fence, like always.

"What’s going on?" The youngest asked, curly hair adorning his head. Their attention was diverted, as a man carried suitcases out and kissed his sons on the forehead.

"You know where they are? Remember. Call as much as you can." A woman asked and they rolled their eyes, nodding. The car was off again, leaving the boys alone in the road. Iris stepped down, as Jazz followed behind curiously.

"Hey, I’m Iris and that’s Jazz." She nodded, pointing her finger at the short brunette behind her. The curly haired one pointed to his brothers.

"Joe, Kevin and Nick."

"Nice. Well... welcome to Edgewater." She sighed, moving her arm around, revealing the old farms and hot dust at their feet. But, to the others, the Jonas Brothers were, indeed, not welcomed.

Re: Living On The Edge[water, that is] [[a joint]]

Jazzlyn and I were sitting on her fence, legs swinging. We saw a SUV pull up and three nicely dressed boys get out. Everyone stared but when they started walking they all went inside, except us.

I got down off the fence and started walking towards them. I was interested to see why three cute boys would want to come to Edgewater, Alabama.

"Hey, I'm Iris and that's Jazz." I said pointed to Jazz who was behind me.

"Joe, Kevin, and Nick."

I quickly learned why they were here. To meet their real parents. I also found out that they are the Jonas Brothers. I welcomed them, but others shunned them and their fancy clothes.

Our friend Amelia turned out to be their real sister, who is also our good friend. Walking to their house was like walking to your death. We got stares, laughs, I heard whispers, but I ignored them. I followed behind the curly haired one, Nick.

"So, this summer should be..." Jazz started.
"Interesting." I finished for her. "Nothing cool ever happens here. And if it does, everyone knows about it." I explained.

"Well, doesn't seem like anyone wants us to be here." Joe said.
"Nah, Amelia's family is great. You should be thankful they're your real parents." Jazz said.
Joe smiled at her, trying to look hopeful. I wasn't buying it.

I kicked a pebble. We arrived at their house.

"Come with us, please?" Nick asked. We walked to the doorstep, not prepared for anything that was to come. And during that summer, a lot would happen.

The Jonas is suppose to be crossed out, meant that my Jonas Boys mean a lot to me.

"Sure, why not." I shrugged, opening the door, as a blast of cool air coated my body. Amelia’s house was the only one that used a fan, since her mother was constantly sick and needed to be cold. That was the reason she put her boys up for adoption. She couldn’t handle so many children; mostly boys. Figuring a girl would be easier to control and that Amelia would help her, she put Joe, Kevin, and Nick up for adoption. Amelia’s face peeked out of the kitchen, where she was making lunch for her mom and gathering her mother’s pills.

"Hey girls! Did you see those fancy kids today? Ha! I bet they’re total snobs. I wonder how long they’ll last till they call home for that car to pick them up." She chuckled and Nick impatiently tapped his foot. Amelia’s face paled as she saw them. I cleared my throat a bit, and Iris moved to the side, only to reveal the rest of the brothers.

"Amelia... I wouldn’t say that. These are your-"

"Joseph? Paul? Nicholas?" A strained voice muttered, and that was our cue to go. It was their mother, bed ridden and, once more, sick. Looking at us for support, the Jonas Brothers heaved a sigh, waving good-bye. Already; we had made friends with the enemies. Ashley, our friend from school, walked over, chewing a piece of gum lightly. Shifting her eyes to the house, she released a yawn, stretching a bit.

"Friends with the snobs?" She asked, dully staring at the landscape around us. Iris and I exchanged glances before turning back.

"They aren’t snobs. They’re actually really nice. You should meet them, I promise you’ll like them." I nodded, and Iris butted it.

"Promise." She sternly nodded, and we connected pinkies. Promise. Figuring the boys would find us in the corner store, we opened the glass door. The bell above jingled a bit, and we separated; meeting back up at the counter. A quick game of Rock, Paper, Scissors decided who was paying. Wonderful, me. I dig my hand into my pocket, scavenging about $17.83 from my customer card and a thick wad of ones and coins.

Seating ourselves on a blanket outside, I dumped the contents of the bad onto the quilt and shoving a piece of hair behind my ears. 3 glass bottles of Cherry Coke, Gummy Watermelons, Pixie-Stixs, a bag of BBQ chips, Cotton Candy, and a box of tropical popsicles. We sat in the baking sun; enjoying the fact that we barely ever got days like this. I had brought a book and Iris and Ashley had gotten Popstar magazine. Yeah, we had that kind of stuff. We just couldn’t afford it a lot.

"Thanks for deserting us." A deep voice mocked, and I felt somebody sit next to me. I chewed on my popsicle stick, handing them the box.

"Yeah, totally awkward." Joe sighed, biting into a Mango-Melon popsicle. Dust lingered around our faces, and Kevin sneezed. Ashley giggled, looking up from the magazine, before turning beet red and ducking back into Popstar. The sky darkened slightly, and we stood, packing up the blanket and throwing extra food into the bundle.

"It’s been oodles of fun." Ashley smiled.

"Oodles of it." Iris chimed in.

"Oodles of noodles." I shouted loudly.

"Doodle noodles."

"Oodles of dou-"

"Okay, thank you." Nick grinned, running a hand through his messy curls and taking a breath.

"We’ll see you guys tomorrow. You should stop by Jaz-," I shot Iris a look, and she gulped, "My house. We’ll teach you to ride horses and maybe go to the creek and pick berries or honeysuckles."

They nodded a bit, enjoying the thought of country entertainment. The only reason we didn’t go to my house was because my mom drank. A lot. And, with my dad gone, she wasn’t abusive. She just wasn’t the greatest mom. Hopefully, the Jonas Brothers would make my summer much better. I polished off my Cherry Coke, listening to my mom ramble, completely drunk, to a wall, telling it her life story in ‘Sweden’ though she was born in Oklahoma.

Little did I know, my summer was going to be turned up side down by those boys.

We sat on the edge of the curb with our food, courtesy of Jazz. Reading Popstar! magazine I saw several pictures of the fancy boys who came to Edgewater. I read rumors, about their tour, and read interviews with them. Juding from it, they seemed nice.

"Thanks for deserting us." I heard a deep voice.
"Yeah, totally awkward." Joe said to us. Ashley, our other best friend, had joined us.

I saw Nick run a hand through his head of curls, wearing expensive looking sunglasses. I couldn't help but laugh at the boy's outfits. I shook my head, thinking of how ridiculous they must look to everyone else. But we were friends with these guys now.

I invited them to stop by my house, hoping we could all go to the creek. They agree'd and looked somewhat excited to be doing something other than sitting around. I could taste summer on my lips and the wind blew past us. Edgewater was in store for something different and I think we'd all learn something from the boys in different ways.

Morning came and we stopped by the diner for breakfast, being greeted by the owner, Karen. She got us eggs, bacon, and toast. The boys walked in, looking normal in their jeans and shirts. But the fancy sunglasses had to go. We walked over to Ashely's and sat on her swingset for the rest of the morning.

We talked to the boys about everything. Love, being famous, our town, etc. I heard Jazz's mom yelling for her across the street. Knowing what was in store, we quickly ran to the treefort. Our hiding place since we were 8.

Re: Living On The Edge[water, that is] [[a joint]]

My mom began to scream for me, so we rushed to the only safe haven. The treehouse. The boys hurried up the ladder, while Iris and I huddled in the corner.

"Is something wrong?" Joe asked, blinking a bit. I shrugged slightly.

"No. Nothing. Not at all. Take off your sunglasses." My request was so quick, they mindlessly took them off and lay them in a pile in front of me. I passed them out to Iris and Ashley, then we both threw them out the window at the same time. Joe gaped, Kevin ducked his head out the window and Nick looked like he was about to faint.

"Those sunglasses," Joe choked a bit, "Cost us $390." Ashley didn’t seem impressed, only sticking her head out the window to watch the little sunglasses bits fly around in the wind.

"Why would you spend so much money on shades when you could spend it on Vanilla Co-oh crap." Her face fell and we all crawled to the window. The wind was furiously beating branches against each other, rain beginning to trickle from the clouds, pounding harder and harder. Lightning and thunder danced across the sky, leaping from fat cloud to fat cloud. The worst part about the lurking, fluffy clouds...? They were green.

Common elementary. Green clouds = tornado. Kids in tree house during tornado = ouch. Scrambling down the ladder, I ended up tripping on a wet step and falling on my back, head slamming against the hard ground in a most unpleasant feeling. There wasn’t time to sit on the ground and moan in pain, I lifted myself from the ground; as a frightening sucking noise filled the air, causing our ears to pop. A vortex of dust whipped around in the field in front of us and screams from all over surrounded me. Swallowing, I rushed behind a building as Joe’s heavy breath was heard next to me, barely though.

"We’re gonna be okay, right?" He asked, looking completely and utterly hopeless. I swallowed harder, wiping my forehead and nodding.

"Ye- yeah. We just got to-" An explosion and searing pain against my back, as the sky and everything around me faded into black.
