Chapter 2
Completely dumbfounded at who was standing just inches from me, I began to speak. “You guys are at the ‘Happiest Place on Earth’ and yet you still find things to argue about?”
Kevin laughed, “You know she’s right guys, the mouse wouldn’t be very happy!”
Nick chuckled as he took a step forward and the curls atop his head began to bounce, “Kev, that might have been the corniest thing I have EVER heard you say.” Before long the guys were laughing.
I looked up smiling and continued, “So how long are you guys here for?”
Joe couldn’t contain his excitement blurting out, “All summer!” Nick took his elbow and jabbed it into his side and said quietly, “Man, what’s wrong with you? Mom said not to tell anyone we were spending the summer here. She’s gonna kill you when she finds out you told someone.”
I looked at Nick and said reassuringly, “You guys don’t have to worry, your secret is safe with me! There’s no one I could tell anyway, I’m here by myself.”
Kevin looked skeptically at me, “When you say you’re here by yourself, what exactly do mean? I’m assuming that your family is in another part of the park?”
I giggled, “I guess you could say that. I’m really all by myself. Today is my first day in the park, I too will be here all summer. My parents are back at home, and I’m an only child.”
Nick looked up from texting and said, “I’d love to hear the story behind how you got your parents to let you spend the entire summer at Disney. That’s awesome!”
Joe had then chimed in excitedly, “I wish Mom and Dad would let me walk around the park by myself!” Kevin laughed and said, “That would not be good for two reasons. One, You would get attacked by every girl in sight and two, you act like you’re five so we need to keep an eye on you.” We were all laughing except for Joe who made a sad face, making us laugh even harder.
Kevin looked at me, “Seriously, I want to know the story now. Tell it to us over lunch?” I was screaming inside. YES!!! and somehow managed to say, “Under one condition, I choose where we eat!” Knowing very well the intended destination: Grandpa.
Nick, who was once again putting his phone away from texting, responded cheerfully, “Alright, that’s fine. Now move up! We’re almost inside!”
We had made our way to the ride when the bickering had resumed. “I am not sitting next to him! I did it yesterday, and will not do it again today” Kevin was looking at Nick while pointing at Joe.
Nick shot back, “Dude, I’m not sitting next to him. Make Big Rob do it. My ears can’t take his screaming.” Joe looked up, “Thanks guys, I love you too!” I had decided to end the arguing, “If it makes you all feel any better, I’ll sit next to him.” Kevin looked at me and smirked, “You have no idea what you just got yourself into!” His phone began to ring. Looking at the caller, he quickly answered… “Hey babe, I’ll call you in about an hour when we go to lunch. The guys and I are about to get on a ride. Ok, talk to you then! Bye beautiful!” Nick looked at Kevin, “Ashlynn?” He nodded with a smile. I looked at Joe who affirmed my thoughts, “The girlfriend”. I laughed, “Ahh, gotcha!”
The “bellhop” asked us how many were in our party and Nick responded, “Five”. Joe went into the elevator shaft first, heading for the top row of seats, followed by me, Nick, Kevin and then Big Rob. After we sat down, I searched for the handgrips. I had been on this ride a million times but it still scared me like it had the first time. My hand hit something on top of the grip and I looked down, Joe was already holding on for dear life and the ride hadn’t even started yet. I turned to Nick, “Something makes me wonder if I chose the wrong seat?” pointing down to Joe’s hands and the nervous expression on his face. Nick laughed and said, “You’re stuck now!” referring to the tightly secured belt across my lap.
The “bellhop” looked eerily at us and then exclaimed, “I do hope you enjoy your stay” and the doors to the elevator closed and the lights went out. The ride lurched into motion and I heard a scream from my right side, knowing well enough who had just made the noise. I heard Kevin exclaim from two seats over, “Oh boy, here we go.” The entire ride, every drop, was filled with non-stop screaming from both Joe and I. When it was all over, my face was still plastered with the same “oh-my-god-im-gonna-die” look as Joe. Kevin, Nick and Big Rob were laughing hysterically with tears streaming down their faces. They then turned to me and Joe as Kevin smirked, “Looks like we just found Joe a new ride buddy!” Nick still laughing spoke up, “Huh? What’d ya say? I can’t HEAR YOU! I think I just went deaf!” I looked at Joe and after a few seconds we too were laughing. Joe added as we walked up to view our ride picture, “You know, it feels good to have someone share my embarrassment for once” causing me to blush. Kevin had pushed his way past us in a mad furry towards the screens and turned to say, “OH MY GOD, this picture is PRICELESS! I’m so getting it! You two just made my day!” And it was then that I began to feel like my life would never be the same.
