Chapter 4
Later that afternoon, the apartment was finally quiet. Kathley had spent the last few hours crying, trying to figure out what to do, while Becka comforted her. Now, Kathley had finally calmed down for a little bit, and was in her bedroom, getting some rest. That gave Becka some time alone, trying to figure out what to do with the situation.
She sat down on the couch, staring blankly at the TV screen while she scanned through channels. What were they supposed to do now? Kathley was determined to keep the baby. There was no way she was going to do abortion. However, Becka thought Kathley was making a huge mistake.
How was she going to work at the clubs if she was the size of a whale, and if she kept getting sick? There was no way any club would let her work there. Becka would be forced to work alone, trying to get enough money for the both of them to live, and to keep up the rent. Not to mention, with a baby in the house, it would mean one extra mouth to feed, which they just couldn’t afford.
Becka couldn’t believe that Kathley was going to ruin everything that they had, everything that they had worked for, and all because of one accidental pregnancy. By keeping that baby, she was not only ruining her life, but Becka’s as well. Nothing would be the same. Becka knew it.
She couldn’t let that happen. She wasn’t going to lose it all. She had worked too hard and for too long to have to have it all ruined. Sighing, Becka got up off the couch and walked into the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of Vodka and gulped it down in one shot. She continued drinking, gulping down glass after glass. She knew it was wrong to drink her problems away, but she didn’t know what else to do. She was only 16. She wasn’t supposed to have to deal with problems like that at that age.
After drinking way too much, to the point where everything was blurry and spinning around her, she stumbled back into the living room. She started laughing uncontrollably, collapsing on the couch. Then, she passed out.
“Becka… Becka… wake up Becka…” She heard a distant voice calling her name. Slowly the voice started getting louder and louder. Becka opened her eyes and looked up. Standing beside her was Kathley. She still looked horrible, but at least she wasn’t rushing to the bathroom, or crouched over a toilet.
She slowly sat up, suddenly getting extremely dizzy, and collapsing on the couch again. Her head was throbbing, and she had a horrible taste in her mouth. “What do you want?” She asked groggily, closing her eyes again.
“Um… well… I needed to talk to you about the whole… baby situation,” Kathley said nervously, looking down at her nails.
“Fine. What is it? I thought you had already decided that you were keeping the thing,” Becka said crankily. She was feeling horrible, and it wasn’t helping that she was reminded of the whole pregnancy. The reason why she had been drinking had been to forget about it.
Kathley say down on the couch beside Becka’s feet, still picking at her nails. “Yes, I am keeping it, because it is a human being. I’m not killing it. But… um… I thought of a way that we could take care of it better. A way that we could make enough money to… um… to have a better life.”
“What’s wrong with our life?” Becka barked, sitting up suddenly. Her head started spinning, but she just stared at Kathley, fire burning in her eyes. “There’s nothing wrong with our life! Our life is perfectly fine the way it is, and I’m not going to let you change it just because of some stupid baby. It’s not my fault you got pregnant!”
“Becka, it would be for the best. We live in a dump, we can barely get enough money to survive, and we are almost always drinking. I don’t want my baby to grow up in an environment like that. We could really make something out of our lives. Come on, what do you say?” Kathley looked up at Becka with pleading eyes, still picking at her nails.
Becka didn’t care. She just felt betrayed, by her best friend. They had been doing fine, living the life they had always dreamed of. They were having the time of their lives. But then, the baby had to come along, and just ruined everything. “No! I’m not changing, and you can’t make me. I like the way our life is. Getting on stage every night, being free to do whatever we want, that’s what I’ve always wanted. That’s what you used to want. Now, I have to go to the club.” She got up off the couch. “I suggest you think about what you’re saying before making a final decision, because it will affect you, and me, for the rest of our lives.” She grabbed her coat and her purse and walked out, slamming the door behind her.
