Chapter 6
One month later
A lot had changed over one month. Kathley had moved out of the apartment she shared with Becka and had gotten her own. She had stopped drinking – though it took her a little while to stop completely – and she was much more concerned about her health. She had also completely changed her wardrobe, throwing out all her skimpy clothes and buying maternity wear. Her stomach had grown a little over the past month, enough to be noticeable.
Becka’s life, on the other hand, hadn’t changed much. She was still going to clubs every night, flirting with all the guys, and even spending the night with some of them for a little extra cash. However, she was drinking more then ever. It was rare that she was seen without alcohol. For her, it was a way to forget about her friend abandoning her.
Kathley had tried to convince Becka to change, that it was time to turn her life around as well, but Becka just ignored everything. She wasn’t going to change, no matter what her friend said. Her life was fine; there was nothing wrong with her, so why should she change? However, her friend kept on annoying her about it.
In fact, that was what Kathley was trying to do on that particular morning.
“Come on. It’ll be good for you! You can’t live your entire life dancing around in clubs and drinking all the time,” Kathley insisted through the phone, for what seemed like the billionth time that morning.
“I can, and I will! There’s nothing wrong with my life. You didn’t think so either, until you got that stupid baby. It transformed you into an old lady. You don’t know how to have fun anymore,” Becka screamed at the phone, clutched tightly in her right hand.
“Becka,” Kathley said in a soft voice, trying to ignore her friend’s harsh words. “Can’t you at least think about it? Stop being so stubborn, and start thinking about what’s best for you.”
“I don’t care what you say. I’m not changing for anybody, not even for you. Now, leave me alone!” Becka hung up the phone, throwing it back on the coffee table and collapsing on the couch. Every day. Kathley called every single day, always saying the same thing, and Becka always answered the same way. There was no way she was going to be pressured to change her lifestyle just because her friend got pregnant. She was fine on her own, and she could find herself some new friends. She didn’t need Kathley.
The phone rung again, and Becka expected it to be Kathley. She picked it up and yelled, “What do you want now? Didn’t you hear me the first time? Leave me alone!”
“Oh…um… was I catching you at a bad time?” A low voice said through the phone.
Becka’s jaw suddenly dropped, and her cheeks turned pink. “Um… Derik? Is that you?” She asked timidly.
“Yeah. Was I catching you at a bad time? ‘Cause if I was, I can just call back later…”
“No!” Becka interrupted, practically screaming in the phone. “I mean… no, it’s ok. I just thought it was someone else,” she quickly recovered, lowering her voice to a normal tone. She was actually surprised that he was calling her, and she wasn’t going to miss her chance.
Derik was someone who she had met at one of the clubs where she worked. He was 23 years old, much older then she was, but she met older guys all the time, so it didn’t bother her too much. Anyway, they had hung out at the club one night, and just really connected. Becka remembered feeling very giddy afterwards, with those butterflies in her stomach. When she had given him her number, she had not expected him to actually call, so hearing his voice through that phone was like some kind of miracle to her.
“Ok, good. Look, I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out later tonight, maybe we could hook up at that club again,” Derik suggested.
“Um… well… I have a gig tonight at another club, but you can meet me there, if you still want to hang out.”
“Sure. Where is it?”
Becka quickly told him where the club was, and then hung up the phone. As soon as she dropped the phone down on the coffee table, she started jumping up and down, screaming like a giddy schoolgirl. Well, she was only sixteen, and though she was crushing on a 23 year old man, it was still a crush.
She started wishing that she had Kathley there with her. Then, she would have someone to talk to, someone to be excited with, and someone who could help her get ready. She quickly shook those thoughts out of her head. She had to forget about Kathley. Kathley was no longer her friend. She had changed, and abandoned her. Becka quickly went to the kitchen and grabbed some whiskey, gulping it down glass by glass. She needed to forget about Kathley, so she could concentrate on her night.
