Okay, the hunt is over, and I gave the part to another friend of mine.
The answer was Cloverfield.
This one is dedicated to Ashlynn. Since nobody cares she's dead.
BUT THEY WOULD IN REAL LIFE!
Chapter Three
Joseph, Nicholas, and Melissa walked into a small but luxurious café and were seated by a waiter. Nicholas sat next to Melissa, and Joseph had to fight to keep the smile that threatened to appear on his face hidden.
He glanced at the menu briefly, before casting it aside. He’d been here enough to know what he wanted. He looked around the restaurant, curious to see if he recognized anyone. When he didn’t his eyes landed on the two in front of them. Melissa and Nicholas were chatting away happily, a blush evident on both of their cheeks.
The waiter reappeared and they placed their orders. During the companionable silence that followed, Joseph decided to ask Nicholas about their older brother. Though they were all close and kept in touch, Joseph’s job kept him from calling his family as much as he would have liked.
Kevin Jonas lived in the city too, and was happily married to his wife of three years, Corinne. How they’d met never ceased to amuse Joseph, and he reflected on the memory fondly.
Kevin had just received his degree to become a pediatrician, and had bought a new apartment near his place of work to celebrate. Joseph, on seeing the apartment, joked that it was a good place, but needed some fine art to “culture” the owner.
Kevin took offense, and promised to visit the next art gallery he saw and buy some art to “culture” himself. He just so happened to walk into Corinne’s gallery where he came out with no paintings or sculptures, but her phone number. They got married a few months later, and were still in as much love as they were when they met each other.
“They’re expecting. A boy.” Nicholas said beaming. Joseph couldn’t help but grin with his brother. It seemed so surreal that they would be uncles, but they were both family centered and it was a great feeling.
“Wow. That’s just, wow.” Joseph said, speechless. Though he loved his career, he sometimes disliked the fact that it kept him away from his family so much. And it also kept him from finding the person his heart was aching for. He’d had many dates, and more girlfriends than he could count, but none that floored him and made him willing to give up his success if it would make her happy.
Kevin had found Corinne, and he was truly happy. Joseph was sure that Melissa and Nick would eventually overcome their shyness and would make a great pair.
But Joseph was alone. And he was just now starting to realize that.
After lunch, Joseph decided to let Melissa have the rest of the day off, much to Nicholas’ pleasure as he quickly invited her to a local music show he would be playing at. She agreed with an ecstatic smile and a wave goodbye to her boss.
Once he let himself back into his office building, he finished the paperwork he’d cast aside earlier and relaxed. Hours passed, and he was surprised when he glanced at the clock it was late at night. Melissa usually kept him informed of the time. He was about to go home when the phone rang.
“Joseph A. Jonas, Attorney at Law,” he said. “Joseph speaking.”
“H-hello.” The voice on the other line said. It was a woman’s voice, and she was clearly distraught. “I need your help.”
“How can I be of service?” Joseph furrowed his eyebrows in interest. He wondered what was the story behind the voice on the phone.
“I need you to be my lawyer. Can you meet me at precinct 53 tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.?”
Glancing at his appointments, he noticed he was free. And something about her voice made him want to take the case. “I can.” After they agreed to meet up, Joseph got off the phone and gathered his things.
His mind was on the thrill of a new case the entire drive home, and something inside him was telling him this was the one he was waiting for.
