Chapter 7

As we made our way back down the hallway we formed sort of a line. Joe was in front holding the flashlight with Nick following behind him. Then came myself, then Emily, and Kevin brought up the rear. We all made small talk gave Joe a hard time about getting us lost again. After we had been walking for a while, our kidding around began to hold an ounce of truth.
"I think Nick and I are just bad luck." I announced after we had be walking for some time and I had no idea where we were. Not that I had ever known where we were, but I was losing my sense of direction. "Seriously, Nick. We shouldn't be allowed to go anywhere without a gps and a tracking device."
"If by we, you mean you," Nick turned and smiled at me. "then I agree completely."
I gave him a slight push. "Whatever." I laughed. "Do you know what I'm craving right now?"
"What?"
"Banana Popsicles." I rubbed my stomach and let out a groan. "They are frozen delicousness."
"Never had 'em."
I stared at him in mock horror. "What??" I turned away and tried to sound angry. "I don't think I can associate with you then."
Nick's chuckle made my heart jump. " Okay. If thats how you want it."
I looked back at him and smiled. He smiled back at me and winked. Suddenly Joe stopped.
"Okay guys, we're almost to the stairs up to the cafe." He held the flashlight and creeped forward, hunching over and overexadgerating every step. When he spoke his voice was think with some sort of accent. It sounded Russian to me. " Be vare, be vare. Zis is strange land. You never know vat vill jump out at you." Suddenly he flayeled around pointing the flashlight up at his face, distorting it, and yelled a deep, weird yell. I screamed as we all jumped back, startled by Joe's sudden burst of movement.
Nick rolled his eyes and pushed past Joe, laughing as he walked. My heart, still pounding, laughed too and followed behind Nick.
"Nice one, Joe." Kevin patted his brother on the shoulder as they continued behind us.
"Thanks, I try."
Once we made it back up into the cafe, I let out a sigh of relief. "So much for going to the bathroom."
"You're telling me." Nick laughed. "But it was quite an adventure, wasn't it."
"Yeah it was." I looked at Nick and then looked away. I looked around the nearly empty coffee shop, and the out at the street. We probably have to meet Emily's mother any minute now. I knew that this would happen. We would now just go on with our lives. But I didn't want to. I didn't want to loose him and go on with my life. I had already done that once and I refused to do it again.
Suddenly Joe, Kevin and Emily appeared around us. " I have an idea." Kevin stepped in. He looked at Joe and Joe knodded. " We have a small show tomorrow night. How about you and Emily come early and you can hang out with us beforehand and stay for the show. It shouldn't be over too late. Maybe we could go and get something to eat or something afterwards."
"Really?" Emily looked from Kevin to Joe to Nick, excitement all over her face. She jumped up and hugged each one. "Thank you guys so much! That would be so cool!"
I looked at them quizzically. "You don't have to do this." I let out a laugh. "You barely even know us."
"Us and Emily just spent the entire afternoon looking for you and Nick, and if that doesn't constitute knowing you, I don't know what does." Then Joe smiled at me and winked. " And for you're information we do have to do this. After all, we couldn't turn down the 'Dream Angel' and her friend."
My eyes wide, I looked to Nick. He shrugged he sholders. It didn't seem to bother him too much, but I could feel my face turning red.
"We gotta go. See you guys tommorrow then?" Joe called as he and Kevin started to walk out the door.
"Yeah." Emily called after them. "Can't wait! Have a good night!"
"You too!" And with that the two boys were gone.
I held out Nicks hat. "I think you need this."
He took it. "Thanks." Before I realized what was going on he grabbed me and kissed me on the forehead. I closed my eyes as he lingered slightly after his lips left my head. Then he pulled away and looked me in the eyes. "See you tomorrow!" Waving goodbye to Emily , he walked out off the cafe in to the setting sun.
