Chapter 8
“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret; it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Emily’s mother dropped me off at my house.
“Come over tomorrow as soon as you can!” Emily told me as she hugged me. “Bring some clothes. For outfit choices and such.”
“You got it, dude.” I said as I pulled away and began to walk up into my house. Excitement bubbled up inside of me as I ran up the stairs. I couldn’t believe what had happened today. You know how sometimes you don’t really understand something until later, how it takes a while for the importance of something to hit you? I hadn’t completely realized that I actually met Nick again, and that I was actually going to see him again the next day until I got home. I had been living in a dream for so long and now, suddenly that dream turned into reality. The ironic thing was that reality felt more like a dream than my dreams did. Funny how that works, isn’t it?
I went to bed that night overflowing with excitement and happiness. But, strangely it was a calming sort of excitement. It was a ‘smile to myself’ kind of excitement. And for the first time in a long time I was truly happy.
The next day I woke up and jumped into the shower. After throwing on sweat pants and an old tee shirt, I blow dried my hair, grabbed some breakfast and ran over to Emily’s house.
Once I was inside, I said hi to her mom then ran up to her room and threw the clothes I had brought along onto her bed. Emily’s clothing style differed greatly from my own. She was a high-fashion sort of girl and I was more girl-next-doorish. However, when we mixed and matched with each other’s stuff, we always found something.
“Em?” I called. “Em, where are you?” I thought I heard the shower turn off as I had come in.
“Hey!” Emily said as she ran into the room out of her bathroom. Yes, her own bathroom. Each bedroom in her house had it’s own bathroom. I was totally jealous of her. “What’d you bring?”
She ran over to her bed and we began to sort through my clothes, and then she began to rummage through her own. We decided on my blue, floral print tank top for Emily, along with skinny jeans and a blue beaded necklace. For me we chose a red U-neck tee-shirt, white Capri pants, and Emily’s tan jacket.
Emily curled my hair as I painted my toenails black. Honestly, I have no idea why I chose that particular color, it was sort of on a sudden impulse. Emily rolled her eyes when she saw what I was doing, even though she did it all the time.
“You know,” Emily’s blue eyes held a thoughtful look. “I really did believe you.”
“About what?” I studied her face through the mirror. She was much more subdued than normal.
“About that feeling you said you got when you met Nick.”
I laughed. “Yeah, but you must have thought I was a little bit insane.”
She laughed. “Only a little bit.”
By the time we got to Chicago, it was about three in the afternoon. People rushed around us trying to keep up with their busy lives as Emily and I hailed a cab. We gave the driver the address that Joe had given us in the coffee shop the night before and grabbed each other’s hand tightly to try and contain our excitement.
Once the cab pulled up in front of the building, we paid the cab driver and hurried out. We were at what looked like an office building.
“I thought we were going to their show.” I looked at Emily, who was still grasping onto me.
“This is the address Joe gave us if we came before four. Maybe we’re going to ride over to the show with them later.” She shrugged. Her white blonde hair blew in the wind, mixing with my reddish-brown. I could feel my curls coming out, and my urgency grew, although I’ll admit it had to do with more than my hair.
We hurried inside the building. The people at the front desk checked a list and then directed us towards a room on the third floor. We made our way down the plush carpeted-painting adorned hallway until we came to their room.
We were let inside by a big man dressed in all black. He step aside revealing a lounge sort of room decked out in modern looking furniture. We found Joe and Kevin sitting on the couch watching TV. When they saw us come in the hopped up and gave each of us gentle hugs.
“Hey!” Joe greeted us both. “Did you ever get to use the bathroom, Natalie?”
I giggled. “Yeah, eventually.”
“How was your trip into Chicago?” Kevin asked us, his voice sweet.
“Uneventful. Thankfully.” Emily giggled. It was her flirting giggle, I recognized it the moment I heard it. The thing was I couldn’t tell if she liked Kevin or Joe, because she had used that same laugh last night when talking with Joe. I made a note in my mind to watch specifically for some clues.
It was then that I noticed Nick walk into the room. His eyes widened and he smiled when he saw us. “Hey!” He laughed. “When did you guys get here?”
“Like two seconds ago.” I told his as he greeted me with a hug.
“Good. I was afraid I was late.” He pulled away and stood next to his brothers.
I smiled up at him. “Nope, right on time.” A feeling of complete contentment washed over me.
Just then a beautiful girl walked out of the kitchen and stood next to Nick. She smiled at me with her beautiful smile, her emerald green eyes sparkled and her jet-black hair was perfectly curled. Nick looked over at her, somewhat startled.
“Oh,” He motioned towards the girl. “Natalie, Emily, this is Sarah.” He put an arm behind her and this time motioned towards Emily and I. “Sarah, this is Natalie and Emily.” He looked over at Kevin and Joe and then back at us. “Sarah is a good friend of ours. She came out from New York to visit us this weekend.”
I couldn’t help but notice she was standing awfully close to Nick. We shook hands. “Nice to meet you both.” Her sweet voice reminded me of honey, and it made me feel sick. She really seemed like a genuinely kind person, yet she still made me feel insignificant somehow. I tried to stop thinking it, but I couldn’t. I
“You too.” We replied. I felt my heart sink, but I tried to cover it up by smiling. I caught Joe and Kevin exchanging questioning looks.
