Look After You
-Prologue-
Joe and Cherie had eloped during the boys' summer tour when they had stopped in Reno. The had snuck off to Las Vegas in a rental car and come back the next morning with a couple of matching left hand rings.
Now, 3 months later it was September. The tour was over and the 3 were taking a break for a couple of months so Nick could start school at LSU with Danika. Kevin and Courteney were busy planning their wedding and moving all of her stuff to Nashville. They had decided to make that their permanent residence since it was halfway between their two families.
With her two best friends on the other side of the country, Cherie almost felt alone in California while Joe began to work long hours in the studio writing songs for the next album. Sometimes the only time she saw him was at night when he got home after she'd gone to bed. His routine was always the same. She knew when he came inside because she could hear him resetting the alarm. Then, he would quietly sneak into their bedroom, pull off his clothes and slip into some pajama pants. No matter how quiet he tried to be, she could always hear the water as he brushed his teeth. Finally, he would slide into bed, pull Cherie close to him, say he loved her, and kiss the back of her neck.
To say the least, this was getting old. Cherie hadn't realized how hard it would be to not see your husband except for sometimes at night. She knew he was busy trying to get things done for the new record since Kevina and Nick were busy with other things at the moment. She just wanted some alone time with her husband. No one knew the secret she was carrying around - not even Danika and Courteney. She knew everyone would be excited, but she couldn't help but feel like it was too soon. Cherie looked down at her stomach that was still semi-flat. She wouldn't be able to hide it for much longer. |

-Chapter 1-
The next morning, Cherie had made an appointment to see her doctor. With Joe being gone before she woke up and being gone the entire day, she knew she wouldn't have to explain being gone for a couple of hours. She got ready and walked out the door. As the gate opened at the entrance of the house, she saw flashes go off as the paparazzi tried to get pictures of her.
"Cherie, over here!" one yelled.
"Where's Joe?" another asked.
She made sure the gate closed behind her before pulling out on the street. Thankfully, the paparazzi didn't really follow her around town.
When she got into the doctor's office, she used her maiden name to check in.
"This way Ms. Le Grenoille," the nurse said when it was her turn.
She got changed into a gown and 5 minutes later her doctor came in.
"Cherie, how are you?' she asked.
"I'm doing great Dr. Brewer," Cherie replied.
"Have you been having any problems since I last saw you?" Dr. Brewer asked, "Have you had any problems with the new birth control I prescribed?"
"Well...I think I might be pregnant." Cherie blurted out.
"Ohhh...well let's just see dear. We'll find out for you. And if you are, then great - we will start you on some prenatal vitamins. If not, then we can start you on a different birth control," Dr. Brewer said, laughing.
Dr. Brewer's nurse took a blood sample and then took it back to the lab to test it.
Dr. Brewer, then, returned about 15 minutes later with the results. "Congratulations, you're pregnant!" she said, excitedly.
A single tear rolled down Cherie's cheek undetected. Dr. Brewer hugged her and said that she needed to make an appointment for a month from then to check the baby's heartbeat. SHe also gave her a prescription for prenatal vitamins and told her to try to figure out the conception date.
Cherie knew eactly when the baby had been conceived. About 6 weeks ago, Joe had come home early with a bottle of wine and flowers to surprise her for her birthday. He had cooked her dinner and they'd had a truly romantic evening - the last romantic evening they'd had.
She didn't blame him - he was working long hours and for the first time in his life, he was being the serious responsible one in the group. She was proud of him for stepping into the role so quickly so no time would be wasted. She just wished that they were more like other newlywed couples. Sometimes they lacked the intimacy that she felt was required to make a marriage work. She loved him with all of her heart but also believed now that maybe they should've waited to get married. And now start a family. She knew she had to tell him...she just didn't know how.
That night when Joe got home, the light in their bedroom was still on. He hoped Cherie wasn't sick. She'd been sort of under the weather lately but he hadn't been home enough to really ask her about it.
"Hey you," he said as he opened their bedroom door and saw her standing next to the bed putting on her nightgown.
He quickly ran over and tackled her as she laughed, pinning her beneath him on the bed.
"Well hello Mrs. Jonas," he said winking.
"Hello yourself, Mr. Jonas," she replied.
She reached up and grabbed the front of his shirt pulling him down for a kiss.
"Mmm...I've missed this," he whispered against her lips. He gave her one last kiss then hopped off the bed to go brush his teeth.
Her heart was beating wildly as she tried to think of an easy way to bring up the subject of babies to her husband.
"Um...Courteney called me today..." she said over the sound of the water in the bathroom.
"Oh yeah? What did she have to say? And when are we getting an invitation to this wedding of the apocalypse? For having so much time off to plan this thing, Kevin sure doesn't know crap about it."
Cherie laughed, "Joe be nice! She said the save the date cards would be going out soon since it's going to be in December. And she said something about not waiting too long to start a family."
"What?" Joe said, spitting out his toothpaste. "That's the worst thing they could do. I'm sure glad that's not us. I've got so much stuff left to do before we have kids. At least we don't have anything holding us back right now."
The words Cherie had been about to say stuck in her throat. SHe felt tears well up in her eyes. She couldn't tell him now.
Joe, oblivious to Cherie's sudden mood change, got under the covers with her and turned off the light.
"I love you," he said as he wrapped his arms around her.
Cherie was thinking about the baby as his hands rested on her stomach. How was she going to tell her husband that he was going to be a father when he didn't want to be one? |

| Hey everyone! I haven't started working on the next chapter quite yet...I've got some ideas but I've got a lab report due tomorrow that I have to finish first. But my Tues/Thurs classes are later in the day so I'll be able to stay up tonight some and write maybe. If I don't get one posted tonight, then definitely tomorrow! Thanks for reading! |

-Chapter 2-
"How did this happen??" Joe yelled.
Cherie cried into her hands as he continued his outburst.
"I thought that we were on some kind of birth control! Are you doing this to try and trap me? I knew it! All along this is all you wanted - now you're set for life, huh?"
He stormed out of the house leaving her in the kitchen.
"Joe, wait!" she cried, sinking to the floor, "Joe....Joe....Joe wait...."
Joe nudged Cherie trying to wake her up.
"Baby, wake up," he said, "you're having a bad dream."
Cherie sat up in a cold sweat. Joe was right next to her - he hadn't left. She quickly put her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.
"Hey, hey," Joe said stroking her hair, "you're okay. It was just a bad dream...I'm right here."
They laid back down and Cherie rested her head on Joe's chest. She could hear the soft rumble of his laugh as he whispered, "Good thing we aren't the ones having kids...I have my hands full taking care of you."
Silent tears rolled down her face as they settled down to go back to sleep. She didn't have anyone to talk to. Danika and Courteney would just advise her to tell Joe - or tell one of their boyfriends. She couldn't risk it getting out...not yet...not until she found a way to tell Joe without losing him.
The next couple of months went by and Courteney and Kevin's wedding day was swiftly approaching. Cherie was doing all she could to hid her ever growin gbelly. AT that point she was about 12 weeks along. She still hadn't told anyone nor found a way to tell Joe.
Cherie left the house to go to the mall because her pants were starting to get so tight she was having trouble buttoning them around her belly. If Joe noticed her weight gain, he hadn't said anything about it...but he was a gentleman - what did she expect?
The paparazzi were storming around the ouside of the gate that day. They had begun to follow her places around town about 3 weeks ago. That day was no exception. As she got out of her car at the mall, the flashes started.
"Cherie, are you shopping for yourself today?"
"Cherie, is that a baby bump?"
"Cherie, are you carrying the first baby Jonas?"
She was not prepared for those questions and her shock just made them even more wild. She could barely get into the mall.
Her phone began to ring.
"Hello," she answered.
"Hey baby, what are you up to?" Joe said on the other line.
"Hey, not much - just fighting through the paparazzi to get into the mall."
"Maybe you should have Big Rob go with you when you go out. I don't really go out much after I get ot the studio. He could stay with you during the day. It would make me feel a lot better."
"Ok, that's fine with me...then he can help me pick out some clothes," she joked.
"Yeah, yeah, just as long as it's not lingerie." he said laughing.
After they hung up, Cherie did her shopping and made sure that non oe it was from the maternity section. She didn't want to start any rumors - even though they would be true.
The next day, Joe went ot the coffee/bagel stand outside the studio. While he was waiting for his bagel, he browsed the magazines. On the cover of US Weekly was a picture of his wife. The caption said "Baby Jonas #1?" From the angle of the picture, Cherie really did look pregnant. After a minute of staring at it, though, he decided that those trendy flowy shirts were playing tricks on him.
Cherie woke up that morning and put on a baggy t-shirt and some loose yoga pants to go to the gym. She needed to be getting some exercise in, but she wasn't going to take a chance of being caught by the paparazzi again. She had to be more careful about what she wore. She drove to the gym with the paparazzi trailing her the whole time. By the time she got into the gym parkin glot they were swarming around her.
"Cherie, are you pregnant?"
"How far along are you?"
"Is Joe happy about it?"
When someone asked about Joe, she quickly snapped her head their way.
Suddenly out of no where, a car going way too fast for a parking lot hit Cherie. She flew up into the air, bounced off of the wind chield breaking it in the process and landed on the ground. One of the paparazzi photographers called 911. They allk neeled next to her as she was unconscious and covered in blood. No one could tell whether she was alive or dead. |

Sorry it's so short you guys, I'll write during my boring classes tomorrow. Hope you like it!
-Chapter 3-
The phone at the studio rang while joe was recording a keyboard part to one of the new songs. He rolled his eyes. He'd forgoten to turn the ringer off. Since it had already ruined that take, he thought he might as well answer it.
"Yo," he said when he picked up the phone.
"Is this Joseph Jonas?" the woman on the other line askd.
"Yes it is...can I ask who is calling?"
"I'm Dr. Pierce from Mt. Sinaii Hospital Emergency Room. Mr. Jonas, there's been an accident."
Joe felt like his heart had stopped as Dr. Pierce continued. "Your wife was hit by a car in the parking lot of her gym. We're trying to get her stabilized but we'd like for you to come in as soon as you can."
Before he could even find the words to respond to the doctor, his feet were in motion. He called ahead to the front to get a driver ready. He jumped into the car that had pulled up outside and told the driver to go to the hospital. He then, called Cherie's parents and then hiw own parents. Both sets of parents said they'd be on the next flights to LA. His next call was to the person in his phone he came to first - Courteney.
"Well hello Joseph," she said answering the phone.
"Courteney, Cherei's been in an accident," he choked out - finally letting the shock wear off. Tears ran down his face and he wiped them with the back of his sleeve.
"What do you mean?" Courteney asked, "I just talked to her this morning!"
"She got hit by a car walking into the gym. Courteney, what am I going to do? I can't lose her. They didn't tell me how she was...only that they were trying to stabilize her..."
The car pulled up to the emergency room and Joe opened the door.
"Will you call Danika and Nick and tell Kevin for me?" he asked her.
Courteney said she would and then they hung up. When he got out of the car, he was met with a frenzy of flashes. The paparazzi had no doubt been waiting on him to get there after word of the accident had spread. He quickly made his way inside and ran to the front desk.
"I'm Joe Jonas," he told the lady at the desk. "My wife was brought in...do you know how she is?"
The older woman put her hand on his shaking arm and said, "Baby you need to sit down now, you're shaking like a leaf. I'll page the doctor to come talk to you and in the meantime I need you to fill out these papers."
She took him over to a chair and sat with him while he filled out the paperwork. About 10 minutes later, Dr. Pierce came out. Joe shuddered at the blood he saw on her gown.
"Mr. Jonas?" she questioned.
When he nodded, she stuck out ehr hand and said, "Hello, I'm Dr. Pierce," then sat down on his other side.
"Mr. Jonas, I have soem bad news. We did everything we could, but we couldn't save the baby. But your - "
"Baby?" Joe interrupted, "What do you mean baby? Cherie's not pregnant."
"Sir, your wife was about 12 weeks along."
Joe stared into space as Dr. Pierce continued, "we've got your wife stabilized but she is really lucky. The only thing that is worrying us is the large gash in the side of her head and the possible concussion. We're going to have to keep her a couple of nights just to rule out any brain damage."
Still in shock from finding out about their baby, Joe asked, "When can I see her?"
"She's awake right now...I'll take you."
He followed Dr. Pierce to Cherie's room. He stood outside the closed door for a minute trying to gather his bearings. Everything made sense now - the sickness, the mood swings, the weight gain. He couldn't believe she hadn't told him. He felt like he'd been dealt the biggest blow of his life. Part of him wanted to just walk out, but he opened the door. She was lying in the hospital bed and pale from the blood loss. Her strawberry blond hair was stained red by the blood. She opened her eyes as the door closed.
"Joe," she whispered.
Although he was still upset, he walked over, sat down on the bed next to her, and took her into his arms. After a couple of minutes, he let go and walked to the other side of the room, pacing.
"Joe," she started, 'I need to tell you something."
She paused. Joe stopped pacing and stared at her. "Oh, so you want to tell me about the baby now? What happened to telling me when you foun dout? Cherie, we use dto tell each other everything - now I don't feel like I can trust you."
"Joe," she cried, "I wanted to tell you...I just -"
"Just save it please. I'm glad you're okay and they said they need you to stay a couple nights. Our parents are on their way...I'll stay til they get here. But then I'm going back to the studio."
He sat down and pulled out his ipod, putting in his ear buds. He looked away when he saw Cherie sobbing into her pillow. Finally after 45 minutes, Cherie drifted off to sleep - exhausted from the accident and crying.
Cherie's and Joe's parents arrived a couple of hours later within 15 minutes of each other. Cherie was still asleep as the 4 of them entered the room. They all hugged Joe. He began getting his stuff together as Nick, Danika, Kevin and Courteney arrived.
"Where are you going?" his mother asked.
"Why don't you ask Cherie when she wakes up."

-Chapter 4-
Joe wandered around the city trying to make sense of everything that had happened. He had been a father - for 12 weeks he had been a father and hadn't even known. As much as he tried to be mad at Cherie, he knew it wasn't fair. He knew he had been a jerk about kids when she had talked about Courteney and Kevin starting a family. Still, she had to know he would've loved the kid either way - even if he wasn't exactly ready. God wouldn't put him through something he couldn't endure...his parents had taught him that since he was a kid. He knew there was a plan...but it still hurt.
When he finally went back to the studio, he found his brothers waiting for him. he sat down in a chair next to them. No one said a word. Kevin and Nick sat silently waiting for Joe to speak. Joe laid his head down on his arms. As they watched, his slumped shoulders began to shake. They both pulled their chairs up next to him and put their arms around him.
Finally, Joe looked up and revealed a tear streaked face.
"Guys," he said, "I know I was a jerk and I souldn't have left. But...she didn't tell me about the baby...what was I supposed to do?"
After Joe had left the hospital, Dr. Pierce had come in and told the whole family about the baby and Cherie's condition. Everyone had been in shock. Cherie hadn't told anyone.
"What you need to do," Nick said, "is go back tot he hospital and tell your wife that you love her - nothing else matters. You love her - period."
Kevin added, "She told us why she didn't tell you. And we realize that maybe you just weren't thinking about it, but when a girl talks about babies, for goodness sakes man, don't say you don't want them!"
This made them all smile a little.
"There you go little brother," Kevin said. "It's okay to smile. You just need to show Cherie how much you love her and that you understand why she didn't tell you."
"It's not enough just to love her, Kevin," Joe began, "It's apparent to both of us...well at least it is to me...that we rushed into this marriage too fast. Sometimes I feel like I don't even know her that well. I mean...think about it. She and I have only known each other for 7 months...7 months! When we got married it didn't seem like a big deal...but in the real world...it is."
After their talk, they headed back to the hospital.
-At the hospital-
Mrs. Jonas and Cherie's mother were both fussing over Cherie as the fathers sat in the waiting room down the hall. Since Cherie would be in the hospital for a couple more days, Courteney and Danika had gone to Cherie and Joe's house to grab some things to make it more homey. They had brought her a couple of cotton nightgowns and a couple of framed pictures of her and Joe and then a group picture of the 6 of them on tour that summer. That picture of the 6 of them was Cherie's favorite picture because it had been taken the morning after she and Joe had eloped.
Cherie reached over and grabbed the picture from the nightstand and stared at it. Joe stood behind her and had his arms wrapped around her. They also had their left hands out showing off their rings as the other two couples stood on either side of them. She smiled as a tear escaped, sliding down her cheek. That had been the happiest day of her life - becoming Mrs. Joseph jonas. The only thing that rivaled that day was the day she found out she was carrying Joe's child.
Not anymore.
She sadly put the picture back on the nightstand and closed her eyes, trying to make the feeling of guilt go away.
Suddenly, she felt a pair of lips cover her own, softly. Her eyes fluttered open and she saw Joe above her. He cupped her cheeks with his hands and leaned foward to kiss her forehead and then her lips for the second time.
"Joe," she started.
He put a finger to her lips, silencing her - for the first time she realized that everyone had left the room and she and Joe were alone.
"I'm sorry about earlier," he said, taking her hands. "I was just so caught off guard when Dr. Pierce told me about the baby. What was the baby like? Could you tell it was inside you? I don't even know what to ask. I just feel like I've missed so much."
She sighed and said, "I found out when I was 6 weeks...and I heard the heartbeat at my last visit with Dr. Brewer."
Joe sat back, thinking. Finally after a minute of silence, he asked, "Cherie...do you ever feel like we got married too fast?"
"Sometimes," Cherie admitted, "But Joe, I love you and I will do anythingn to get through this...with you."
"I love you, too," he said, running his hands through his hair. "I was just thinking...that maybe we could spend a little time apart..."
"What do you mean?" Cherie asked. Her heart felt like it was about to beat out of her chest. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. "Do you mean...like a separation?"
"I just mean that we both need some time to think - I know I do. We need to reevaluate things with ourselves and with our mariage. And I feel like I need to do my thinking alone."
Cherie's eyes began to water as Joe pulled her to him. He put his chin on top of her head. "Don't worry. I'll stay here while you're in the hospital. Then, when we get you home, I'll move some of my stuff over the guest house. Cherie, I love you," he said as she cried in his arms. "That's why I'm doing this. I need to be alone and think about the person I am and try to figure out how to be a better husband to you. And we need to slowly get to know each other again so we won't make the same mistakes and hurt each other again."
Cherie went home from the hospital 2 days later. As Joe helped her into their bedroom, she noticed that a lot of his stuff was gone.
Kevin and Nick had agreed that some time apart would probably help things and they had helped mvoe his clothes and toiletries into the guest house.
Courteney and Danika came in as Joe was helping Cherie into bed.
"Don't you think it's time for you to go?" Danika asked, coldly. not only was she mad at Joe for having a stupid plan for "reuniting" them...she was also mad at Nick for agreeing with him.
"Do you really want to start in on me right now, Dan?" Joe asked, glaring at her.
"As a matter of fact - "
"Hey!" Cherie interrupted, "you guys fighting is not going to make things better so why don't we drop it. I mean, it's not like we won't ever see eachother.
Joe and Cherie had decided that for their marriage to work, they needed to go back to the beginning and just get to know each other. They knew they loved each other but they also knew that just loving each other wasn't enough. They were going to have to learn more about each other and learn to understand each other's feelings and needs. They would have to work at it.
Before leaving, he leaned over and kissed Cherie before whispering, "I love you" and disappearing out of the room.
Danika shut the door and immediately Cherie was sobbing. Both girls climbed onto the bed and laid on either side of their friend, trying to comfort her.
After a while, Cherie regained her composure and stated, "Today is the first day of the rest of my life. I will not just stand by and watch my marriage slip through my fingers."
"Speaking of marriages," Courteney said, turning her head to look at Cherie, "Kevin and I have decided to postpone the wedding until after you and Joe are feeling better. This whole thin is hard on all of us and we just thought that we should wait."
"Oh Courteney," Cherie said, "don't postpone it because of us."
"To tell you the truth," Courteney admitted, "I'm afraid - I'm beginning to think that Kevin and I don't know enough about each other as we should. I'm kind of glad we're postponing so we spend more time just being together without thinking about the wedding.
-The Guest House-
Kevin and Nick helped Joe unpack his things then sat down in front of the big screen tv to watch an afternoon of golf.
"Joe," Kevin said, "How exactly is this space thing supposed to work? You hide out here and magically your marriage works?"
"Whatever...no. The whole point of this is that we need to grow up. Plus - we need to become best friends. I think we moved too fast and missed that stage to an extent. A lot of our tiem together before we got married was spent flirting...kissing...kissing some more..talking about kissing - I want to date my wife. I want to spend quality time with her doing absolutely nothing but talking about our dreams and goals, our likes and dislikes - guys I don't even know what her favorite food is. I want to become my wife's best friend." |
