Chapter 14
10:56 and I was ready for action. Courtney and Brittney had gone shopping, I “didn’t feel well” so I stayed behind. Sitting in the parlor, I flipped through the newspaper until I hear the doorbell. As soon as I opened the door Pepper went crazy. “EGHAD!!! WE GET TO GO LAMP SHOPPING!!!! Aren’t you happy? I’m happy…” It did not take much to excite this kid.
“Hi Mrs. Jonas, and…Peppers Mom” I said slipping onto the backseat of the car beside Pepper. “Hello Bailey” Smiled Mrs. Jonas. Pepper immediately talking about what kind of lamp she wanted. “So I’m thinking something elegant…but not too old fashioned. Or smelly, ewww no one likes an old smelly lamp!” She said, a disgusted look on her face. I laughed. “So here is a picture of my room.” She pulled out a Polaroid of a large room, decorated, as Brittney would say, “old fashioned chic”. “The style I’m going for is old Hollywood” Pepper blabbed. And that it did look. The wallpaper, the elegant hanging chandelier, the furniture, framed art, even the carpet! All it needed was an awesome lamp.
We talked for the next half hour about everything you could imagine, bands, horses, houses, pancakes, and boys, including a very special one if you catch my drift. We pulled up to what looked to be a flea market, if you could call it that. A flea market back in Tennessee was a man with a truck on the side of the road selling corn, used plaid shirts, and knitted potholders. This was what you would call the exact opposite.
The building was large, and modern, filled with all sorts of cool antiques, none of it including used board games or old stuffed animals. The place was more like a shop, filled with items that looked brand new; it didn’t even smell like old lady! Although the prices were just as large as the store.
“Come on!” Pepper dragged me past a series of furniture until we arrived in the lamp section. “LAMPS!!!! She screamed jumping up and down, then laughing. “Well come on! Help me find one! For the next half hour we ran through the lamp section, taking pictures and examining lamps. “This is hopeless” Pepper fell to the ground, and hit herself in the head with her fist. “Whoa”, I said glancing towards the corner. “Look at that one!”
Pepper ran towards it. “Dude! That is quite the lamp!” And that is was, the base was made of clear glass and instead of a lampshade, the top was made to look like almost a mini chandelier. It was perfect. “WOO!!!!” shouted Pepper, creating a few stares. “We found our lamp! Take pictures!” Pepper held the lamp and posed for the camera as I took as many pictures in under a minute as I possibly could. I had learned her attention span was not very long. “Let’s go find my mom and aunt so we can show them this wicked awesome lamp!” We searched the store until we found them, and Pepper proudly displayed her lamp. “This thing is off the chain!!!”
“Like Nick!” I smiled. Pepper rolled her eyes and laughed. “Well…now what?”
“Vintage clothing!!!!” We both raced to the clothing but I stopped, and turned around. My attention had drifted elsewhere, the jewelry section. I was never really into jewelry, at least not like Courtney and Brittney. Their idea of fine jewelry was diamond studs from Tiffany’s. Mine was beaded bracelets from Target. This one particular necklace though, it caught my eye. Vintage, like everything else, it shone against the glass it was encased in.
It was a locket. Silver, with a criss-cross pattern, almost like the one on Nick’s purity ring. It was elegant, yet not tacky, more classy. I had instantly fallen in love with it, if it was possible to fall in love with a necklace. I eyed the price, and my heart sank. I couldn’t afford that! Heck I wasn’t even sure if I could afford lunch! Pepper interrupted my thoughts “What are you looking at?” She asked, coming up behind me. “Ohh…nothing. Just that locket. I tapped on that glass window. “Well why don’t you buy it?” Pepper looked at the price tag. “Ohh. Well…”“It’s ok” I laughed. “It’s just a necklace! Now come on! Let’s go find some vintage clothes!” She smiled, still a bit puzzled at my reaction, but then started to head towards the clothing.
I guess it was just a necklace, but still, I had never cared about jewelry before, why now? I guess it was stupid to get all mystical over a dumb necklace, but still I couldn’t help it. Anyways, who cares? Today had been awesome. Who knew lamp shopping could be so much fun? For the past week and a half my whole life seemed to be Courtney, Brittney, Courtney, Brittney. It was nice to be me for a while. I glanced back at the jewelry one more time, and then ran to catch up with Pepper.
