Chapter 7
The park was nice, but just not as nice as the fresh farm air at home. Lilac with her elegant appearance fit right in here. I did not. I stood awkwardly, wearing ripped jeans and a t-shirt that said “Don’t be trashy, recycle.” All the people here were dressed in fancy skirts and heels, or suits.
Who the heck wears nice clothes to go for a walk?
Apparently these people did. I wished I was at home, chasing the tractor with my Old English Sheepdog Buster. But no I was stuck here. I sat down on a bench and Lilac sat down beside me. We just sat there staring at the odd overdressed people. “Wow.” I thought….
Someone came up behind me at put their hands over my eyes.
O God. O God O God O God OH MY GOD!!!! I WAS BEING KIDNAPPED!!!! I just about screamed.
“Guess who?” The voice behind me said. I breathed a sigh of relief.
“Nick, don’t scare me like that!” I said, happy he was here.
“What brings you here?”He said, acting all happy back.
“Walking my cousin’s dog” I mumbled in an annoyed tone
“Well I want you to come meet my brothers” he said, putting his hand on my back.
JOE! KEVIN! FRANKIE!
We walked up to a group of people, which were the Jonas family and a couple that must have been Nick’s grandparents.
“Mom, Dad” He said “This is Bailey. Bailey, this is my family” He continued to name them all off.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you” I smiled back.
“Is that your dog!?” Asked Frankie, obviously intrigued.
“Actually, it’s my cousin’s dog.”
“Can I play with her? Please, Please!”
I grinned giving him the leash. “So…do you want to play Frisbee or something?” Asked Nick.
“Well, I don’t want to interrupt you” It looked like they were in the middle of a picnic.
“Nah, it’s ok” He started running towards the open field. Joe laughed a bit. I ran to catch up with Nick.
“Bet you can’t beat me there!” He said with a grin on his face. I stuck my tongue out. “Betcha I can!” I ran as fast and as hard as I could until I was out of breath “Ha! I beat you!” We both lay down in the middle of the grass. This field was out a bit further than the main part of the park. There were no men in suits or women in fancy dresses. I could finally relax.
We must have played Frisbee for like an hour because it started getting dark. “Maybe we should head back” Said Nick.
“Yah” I agreed.
We started walking back towards his family. The sky was really pretty and the air felt cool and nice.
“I had a great time” He said. Then he took my hand. I honestly had no clue what to do. Like I said, No experience what so ever with guys. I was 14 and just starting high school this year, and my class of 14 was like family. NO DATING! I just looked back at Nick and smiled. We held hands the rest of the way back. Then I prodded Lilac away from Frankie and headed home. I was really sad the time went by so fast. I was so wrapped up in what was happening I forgot to ask for a phone number.
“Great.” I mumbled to myself “My second chance and I blew it”.
