Chapter 2;;
A few days passed, and Joe had yet to grow accustomed to the new surroundings. But it wasn’t just Joe, it was all the boys. Their love for eccentric taste, high fashion, and well-styled hair was a bit much for the small town. In the few days that had passed, all three boys had used up all the product they had managed to bring with them.
The morning started hard, Kevin slowly rolling out of his bed with a loud moan and a whine as he trudged towards the bathroom. He knew what lay in store for him, and he as well as Joe was not excited.
“We need to fix this problem,” Kevin complained as he caught Joe trailing in behind him.
“Let’s go out then,” he said pushing Kevin out of the way, trying to squeeze whatever remained in the bottle of mousse.
After awhile, they had finally all dressed and styled their hair to the best of their abilities. Throwing on a pair of shades, they each stepped out and walked down the sidewalk.
“Man you guys have great hair,” Brittany mocked as she linked her arm into Nick’s.
Kevin stopped, turned around, and shot a glance of death in her direction. She simply laughed, since she opted to throw her hair up into a quick pony.
“You know you three stick out,” she continued on, her eyes following each boy’s outrageous outfits.
“I like it” Joe snapped back, shaking his hips from left to right.
“Dude let’s grab some food too, I’m starving” Nick cried out as they stepped towards the rusted sign spelling out General Store.
The day had started off slow for Niki as well. She was a sweet small town southern girl with a simple beauty and eyes that could save the world. Her smile was enough to send the sun out of business, and every boy in her high school was swooning over her. She had never cared much for the boys. She was more focused on her schoolwork. She worked hard to excel above and beyond the rest, she had plans to make it big and get out of the town. But so far, her plan had yet to take action.
Her parents weren’t extremely wealthy, but they were much better off compared to the other towns’ people. She assumed it had to do with the fact that everyone needed something they had, something that they stocked inside their store, and she was right. Everything you could possible think to need was located in one store, creating an ease and simplicity that the town loved.
She worked every morning, giving her parents the time off, with another local girl, Tina.
Tina was a twenty-year-old single mother to a precious four-year-old daughter. She worked hard to keep her feet on the ground, and was thankful for the opportunity that Niki’s parents had given to her. Niki loved it because she had someone to gossip with. Small towns run big on gossip, always has always will. She looked up to Tina, the way she carried herself, how she was independent and gave up her dreams to shelter the dreams of someone else.
“So Tina…” Niki started as she watched Tina tie on her apron and step behind the counter. But her thoughts were quickly cut off when she took a quick glance outside the front doors.
“Whoa, check out those guys” Niki said as she saw three overly dressed, eccentric boys stepping up to the front door.
She watched as they all filed inside, their sunglasses remaining rested on the bridge of their noses.
“Wow” she mumbled out to Tina as they watched them rummage through the aisles grabbing at snacks.
Running over to where she left off before Tina had arrived, Niki continued to stock the new candy bars in the appropriate place. She nodded her head to the country music that was softly playing through the store radio from the front counter.
“Easy” Joe mumbled as he took a deep breath and stepped in her direction.
She heard a silent chuckle from behind her and glanced up to find a boy, his hair semi-styled, hiding behind shades.
Her cheeks burned bright when the embarrassment of her head nodding came to mind. She opened her mouth to speak, to ask if he needed help, but the words couldn’t find their way from her lips.
She watched as he pulled down his sunglasses, revealing the softest brown eyes she had ever seen.
“Well, Hello there,” he said through a flirtatious smile.
“Hi” she continued to blush as the items in her hands fell to the ground.
“Here, let me help you with that” he said laughing picking up the candy bars scattered around the floor.
For minutes that felt like hours, the two of them laughed and talked, he told her jokes and even though some weren’t funny, she snorted. Her face was constantly flushed from embarrassment, but he Joe nudged her here and there letting her know he liked it.
“Joe! We are leaving” Nick called out holding on to his girlfriend’s hand.
Joe motioned to Niki as the two of them watched Kevin stutter at the front counter. Turning her attention back to him, she batted her eyes as he tried to start another conversation.
“NIKI!” Tina shouted out, hoping to snap the attention between them.
“Oh, Sorry Tina!” she cried out turning to face Joe again. “I think the guy you’re with is ready to go” she said as he watched her shift her feet.
Brittany pushed the door open, her body half in the door and half out.
“JOE! Let’s go! NOW!” she screamed out.
“I’m coming Brit, chill!” he hollered back as she shut the door behind her.
Noticing that both brothers and Brittany were standing outside waiting for him, he let out a deep sigh and met Niki’s gaze for the last time.
“I guess I’ll see you later” he said with a big smile and pulling her into a hug.
She watched as he backed himself into the door, his eyes growing big with embarrassment, and she let out a quick laugh. Turning around he waved one last time before pushing the door open and stepping outside, pulling his glasses back down over his face.
As he approached his brothers, a satisfied smile crossed his face.
“That was too easy” he smirked as he punched Kevin in the arm.
