“Vinceroooooooooooo”
Applause filled the air as the final notes of Luciano Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma blared from the radio in the corner. Elizabeth stood with her arms spread, absorbing the cheers and whoops from her co-workers for her exceptional performance. Grinning, she finally lowered her arms and turned back to her stove.
Her Gnocchi was sautéing in the pan, and they were just about ready. She gently swirled them in the pan as the aroma of garlic and butter filled her nostrils. She inhaled slowly and sighed. This was why she loved being a chef.
“Betsy!”
Elizabeth turned to face her good friend, Spencer, who was also a waitress at the restaurant she worked at.
“Is the order for table 4 almost done?”
“Just about.” Elizabeth turned back to her stove and gave the Gnocchi one last stir. She then carefully spooned it out onto a clean white plate and sprinkled it with cheese, adding a dash of pepper and a sprig of basil.
“Perfect.” She murmured to herself. “How’s that steak coming?” she hollered across the kitchen.
“All set, chief!” Allison yelled back. Allison was Elizabeth’s second-in-command and a fabulous chef as well.
“Ok, order up!”
Spencer dashed over and carefully picked up the two plates of steaming food. She smiled at Elizabeth.
“Looks great, Beb!”
“Would you expect anything less?”
Spencer laughed as she carried the dishes out the swinging door into the dining area. Elizabeth sighed and leaned back against the counter.
“Another satisfied customer?” Allison walked over to join Elizabeth on the counter.
“Hopefully.” She replied. At only 20 years old, Elizabeth Jenkins was a phenomenal cook. She had enrolled in chef’s college at 18, but when her current boss and restaurant manager Nat Fleming, came to scout out new chefs for her restaurant, she was blown away by Elizabeth’s obvious natural talent. Elizabeth landed the job of Head Chef on the spot and now worked at what was soon to be one of New York’s most popular Italian restaurants, La Squisito. Everyone wanted to try some of Elizabeth's fine Italian cuisine.
“So, are we on break now or what?” Allison asked, eyeing up the staff lounge door. They’d both been on shift for four hours now.
“No, we have a reservation for twenty coming in about ten minutes.” Elizabeth said, cringing.
“Wait, twenty? Like, two-zero, twenty?” Allison replied, her mouth gaping open.
“Yes, like twenty. We’re going to need all hands on deck for that one.” Elizabeth sighed and wiped her dirty hands on her apron. She clapped her hands together and turned to face the bustling kitchen full of cooks.
“Ok people, we have a big group coming in a few minutes and we’re going to need everyone to pull their own weight here. Everyone come over here.”
All twelve staff members gathered around her, in a big circle.
“Let’s do ‘Fired Up’.” She said. They all placed their hands in the middle of the circle.
“Hey! Hey! Are you ready are you ready to get fired up?
Hey! Hey! Are you ready to strut your stuff?
Hey! Hey! Are you ready to get fired up? FIRED UP, FIRED UP!”
The group broke apart, cheering and headed off to their separate work areas. Moments later, Spencer returned.
“Alright guys, I have the orders! I need two Quaglia 'l Forno, a Calamari al Salto, easy on the spices in the tomato sauce…”
In seconds, the kitchen was a hive of activity full of chefs running around trying to fix the meals in an acceptable amount of time. Elizabeth was right in the midst of it all preparing the most difficult dish ordered, and her specialty, Gamberetti 'l Provencale. She gathered the shrimp she required and tossed them in a pan with white wine already simmering in the bottom. It had to be cooked to perfection.
“Let’s go people, there’s a hungry family out there waiting to eat!”
Tell me what you think!!! woot!!
