Chapter One . . .
“Your favorite part is coming up.”, I said as I threw popcorn at him.
“Oh yes! I have to do my dance!”, he exclaimed as he jumped off the couch and onto his feet. Sometimes, he scared me with his antics, but I still called him my best friend. He had a way of putting a smile on my face, especially when I needed it most. He was pretty wonderful like that.
The music began to play and he began to dance. My stomach hurt with laughter.
Greased lightnin’, go greased lightnin’
He tried to mimic John Travolta to the best of his abilities, but failed in comparison. His dancing wasn’t the best, but his singing was amazing. Everyone considered Nick the performer, but I was one of the only people to know that Joe was born to be on that stage too, as stupid as he thought it sounded.
“Where is my other heel?”, my sister’s voice echoed through the house. She had been freaking out all day. First, her hair was wrong, then her makeup smudged and now, her heel.
“What is she doing?”, Joe asked. All of the sudden, a big pink cloud of satin and tool was in front of the television, blocking our view.
“I know you took my other shoe!”, she yelled as she waved the one she had, in my face. I looked over at Joe, who was holding back laughter.
“I didn’t take your shoe. They don’t even fit me! Besides, they are ugly, like your dress!”, I replied. I wasn’t trying to be mean, but simply do my job as a little sister.
“Ugh. Little kids!”. The pink puff ball disappeared and Joe and I laughed it off. I don’t think twelve years old counted as being “a little kid”.
“Prom is dumb”, Joe chimed in.
“I think it’s cute.”, I protested. He looked at me with a raised brow and chuckled. He was so immature.
“You’re such a boy!”, I said as I jokingly pushed him. “You don’t want to go to prom?”, I asked, even though I was pretty sure I knew the answer. But, Joe always had a few surprises up his sleeves.
“I’d go if I was in love with a girl”, he answered. “What about you?”
“Of course I want to go. But, a boy has to ask you.”, I explained. He got the kind of look in his eyes when he had an idea.
“Well, I’ll make you a deal. If no one asks you. I will go with you.”, he offered. I was taken aback by how sweet he was. He was such a great friend.
“Really?” He shook his head in agreement. “You promise?”
“I promise.”
