Chapter 2
The first show went pretty well, I wish I could say the same about the entire day though. Let me take you back a few hours, right before soundcheck, when the nightmares began.
At about 4:15 I departed the tour bus for the back door of the arena. Soundcheck was at 4:30 so I figured I would give myself enough time in case something happened. And boy did it. I walked up to the door and the Security Guard stopped me, “I need to see your access pass before I let you proceed.”
Completely dumbfounded I responded, “I’m sorry, I don’t have one. But I’m going to be late for soundcheck if you don’t let me through.”
He laughed. “No pass, no entrance.”
By this time I was beginning to panic, “You don’t understand, I’m the manager for Of Broken. I have to get in there.”
He crossed his arms, “Yeah, and I’m the Jonas Brothers’ manager. I know you’re just a fan of the boys, so get in line with the rest of them. Don’t make me call back-up.”
I pulled out my phone and called Tim, who thankfully answered and said he’d be over to get me. Five minutes later the door opened, and out walked him and Joe, both laughing. Tim was holding the pass I was supposed to be wearing and spoke to the Security Guard, “It’s ok, she’s our manager.” He apologized for the inconvenience and we headed off to the stage, but not before I got a lecture about leaving the meeting so suddenly this morning.
Joe laughed, “So he thought you were a fan out there?”
Tim murmured something and I answered, “Yeah, he did.”
Once we got to the stage, Joe took a seat on the edge of a speaker and himself towards me, “So are you? You know, a fan?”
Without thinking first, Tim blurted out, “Fan doesn’t even begin to cover it. More like obsessed.” I wanted to die.
Joe smirked and proceeded, “That’s actually pretty funny. But if you don’t mind me asking, since everyone has a favorite, who’s your favorite brother?”
I sighed, “Only time will tell Mr. Jonas, patience is key. If you’re smart enough, you’ll figure it out.”
With that, soundcheck began. The sound-system was going crazy and there were a million problems with the instruments. During the second song, Tim popped a string on his guitar and one of Adam’s cymbals on the drums hadn’t been secured tight enough, causing it to come crashing down in the middle of the first chorus. I guess the boys were nervous, because I had never heard them play that bad in my entire life. The thought of performing in front of about 15,000 people for the first time made me nervous for the guys, as well as Kevin, Joe and Nick. I guess Mr. Jonas didn’t notice how bad it was, because he approved the setlist before we retreated backstage.
The show was an improvement from soundcheck. The crowd seemed to like it because cheers filled the arena and we had managed to sell some t-shirts and some CD’s. Not bad for a first night’s performance.
Right now, we’re waiting for the crowd to clear out. The show ended about two hours ago, and everyone is on our bus. There was a challenge thrown today about who was the master of Guitar Hero. I was trying to get some financial business secured as well as managing travel and hotel arrangements for the next leg of the tour, but concentration was nearly impossible when the clicking of plastic guitar controllers and “Rock You Like A Hurricane” filled the bus every 3 minutes.
Before long, Joe had made his way over to me, guitar in hand.
“Come play with us. I’m pretty bad, so you’ll probably beat me.”
I looked up from my laptop, “I’m kind of busy right now. Maybe later.”
He shook his head with a smile, “You’ve been at that for an hour now, take a break. Have some fun.”
I sighed, that gorgeous smile got me every time, “Fine, give me the guitar.”
And with that, I had managed to crush every single one of my opponents, 7 in all. Even Kevin, who gave me a run for my money. Two hours later I had managed to claim the title of ‘Guitar Hero Goddess’ as we departed for the next city on the tour.
