Chapter 24
A milkshake of emotions was ready to explode, this game was getting far too complicated, and it was only beginning. Charlie for one was not backing down just yet, and Nick would have to go along with it. Whilst birds were chirping, frogs were croaking and ducks were quacking all the campers were scattered all around the large lake of the campsite. All struggling with fishing, so far nobody had any luck.
Youngster Frankie had his eyes set straight on the spot Charlie and Nick were fishing, when he suddenly felt something tug at his reel. His eyes grew wide when he saw his line had gone under water. “Natalie!” He cried out, clueless to what to do. The absentminded Natalie snapped out of her little daydream and sped over to Frankie, helping him reel in his line. As the hook lifted up from the waters an average sized bass had the hook stuck in his mouth. Frankie excitedly jumped up and down as Natalie dropped the fish in the bucket filled with water from the lake. Assisting Frankie unhook the fish, it swam around in the muddy water whilst Frankie stared at it in admiration.
“That was close.” Charlie mumbled, looking over at Nick as she tossed a pebble in the water, she wasn’t really in the mood to catch and fish with the hook stuck in their eye or anything like that anyways. “Yeah.” Nick breathed tensely, starting to grow frustrated with this charade they were playing. “Nice cover up though.” Nick praised with a small smile, reeling his line back in. A chuckle escaped Charlie’s lips as she shrugged modestly. “It’s a gift.” They both let out a quiet laugh, who knew pretending to hate each other would be so hard, after you had done nothing but that for several years?
Returning to the fishing spot Madeleine and Joe had claimed, the two had cutely cuddled up close to each other; both had settled their rods down on the dock, not really interested in catching a fish right now. Joe’s hand had lingered around Madeline’s for quite some time, and finally the daredevil got the courage to intertwine their hands, causing a small smile to spread across Madeleine’s face. “We’re gonna look like losers you know? Everyone will have caught a dozen of fishes and we’ll have nothing.” Madeleine spoke up with a giggle, looking over at Joe who had been staring at their reflection in the rippling waters of the lake. “Well, I did catch something. I caught the girl.” Joe stated simply, turning his face towards Madeleine as he winked at her. Madeleine’s cheeks flushed pink as she just laughed it off. “We could always buy a fish in a shop, and I’ll toss it over to you, and you can catch it.” Joe then suddenly said with a big goofy grin plastered on his face. Madeleine laughed hysterically and uncontrollably. “You’re too much Joe.” She managed to get out in her fit of giggles. “Too .. much.” She repeated, calming down as she leaned in placing a soft peck on Joe’s lips.
Previously tangled up in a fishing rod, Kevin stood besides Heather whilst they were just goofing around, as Kevin stuffed a piece of bread in Heather’s mouth with a laugh. His amused girlfriend puffed out the piece of bread, poking his stomach with a sly grin, making a small chuckle come out of Kevin. “You don’t like bread?” He asked jokingly, curling his lips up in a pout. “I like bread, I just like this better.” Heather stated, pecking Kevin on the lips with a smile, slowly wrapping her arms around his neck. Kevin gave in and rested his hands around her waist when he suddenly felt a cold drop fall down onto the top of his head. He pulled away lifting his face up towards the sky. The once so beautifully blissy clear blue skies had turned into a darkened gray as clouds moved in over the campsite. “Looks like it’s gonna rain, we better get inside the tents.” Kevin said, starting to gather all the fishing equipment. Heather nodded, helping Kevin carry back the rods to their camping spot.
It didn’t take too long for the rain to finally pour down on the campsite in Toronto, causing all campers to hurry back to the warmth of their caravans and tents. Kevin, Heather, Frankie and Natalie had gathered in one of the tents, turning on some flashlights playing a good ole game of: ‘Go Fish’. Joe and Madeleine had curled up Joe’s tent, just talking about whatever came to mind and the oh-so –hardcore-hating duo? They had taken a leap of faith and crawled back into the tent Charlie usually shared with her best friend; Madeleine.
The rain had drowned out any interest to be outside; everyone sought sanctuary away from the rain, with a protecting roof above their heads. Charlie sighed, zipping closed the tent, feeling her soaked t-shirt draped around her body. “Bah.” She mumbled ruffling in her wet locks, looking over at Nick, his curls soaked as water dripped down from them. He laughed lightly seeing Charlie ruffle in her hair. “Your hair looks fine, don’t worry about it.” He assured with a small smile. With a sigh Charlie lowered her hands, rummaging around in her bag, pulling out two towels, chucking one in Nick’s hands. “There ya go.” She said, drying her face and attempting to dry her hair. Nick smiled, nodding his head. “Thanks.” He dried his curls, and took off his shirt, he wasn’t selling out here; he just didn’t want to catch a cold. Charlie had dug her face away in the crème coloured towel whilst she dried her face, she looked up seeing her boyfriend shirtless, revealing his well built abs. Nick smiled; quite amused to see how his girlfriend tried not to let it show how she admired his bare stomach. “I’m just gonna put something dry on.” Charlie stated, turning around as she quickly changed into an oversized FC Barcelona t-shirt from her dad, the shirt went down to her knees, but at least it was warm. Whilst changing Nick had looked away, but quite subtly he had let his eyes glide down her figure, even though he only could see a bare back with a bra strap around her midriff. He listened to the rain tick down on the nylon fabric of the tent as Charlie crawled up in his arms with a sigh. “How long do you think it’s gonna rain?” She asked in a low voice. “I think the rest of the afternoon.” He quietly replied, having one arm around Charlie as he lay back in a pillow with a sigh. “Bye, bye fishing day.” Charlie mumbled, feeling Nick’s fingers run through her hair as he twirled one of the chestnut brown coloured locks around his finger. “Hello afternoon with Charlie, without pretending.” Nick whispered in her ear with a smile, kissing her on the cheek, Charlie smiled looking up at him. “Thank you rain.” She thought to herself, enjoying this simple moment of bliss they had together.
