The Older Man
Her eyes scanned around looking for someone to talk to, she was new to the town and her job was her first chance to meet someone new. She was 18, almost nineteen and she had just moved from the Jersey Shore to California. She wasn’t expecting to make it big or fall in love with a movie star, nothing of the sort. She was there as a favor to her friend, to ride horses in shows and to work instead of going to college. It’s not that she didn’t want to go to college but with the schedule of a horse rider she really couldn’t. Which explained her job at Starbucks for the down time between shows. Everyone in front of the counter, walked away from her without a second glance. That is until he walked up. He had curly brown hair cut short in a mini afro and he had some killer sideburns. Plus eyes hidden by huge sunglasses and a scarf around his neck. She took his order and made his coffee as fast as she could smiling handing him the cup.
“You must be new here…” his eyes go down to her nametag and he laughs reading it, “new employee.”
“Corinne. And yea,” she nods.
“I’m smooth today… New employee must mean you’re new,” he says with a chuckle.
“Well you are doing pretty good. But I like you already especially since no one else would even talk to me,” Corinne sighs.
“Why not,” he asks?
“Cause who wants to talk to the girl who talks to horses. I mean…”
“Haha it’s cool. I talk to my guitar. I’m Kevin,” he smiles at her.
“Corinne but I already said that.”
“That you did. Do you work tomorrow?”
“Nope it’s my first day off since I started here two days ago,” she smiles over that fact.
“Well than you want to hang out with me and my brothers. It’s our day off too,” Kevin smiles.
“Sure,” Corinne nods.
Kevin pulls a sharpie from his pocket quickly scribbles his number on a napkin.
“Call when you are ready and I’ll come get you,” he says.
“Will do,” Corinne smiles.
The rest of the day is spent getting coffee for people who ignore her and wondering about what she’s going to be doing the next day with Kevin. The day comes to an end with Corinne still remembering the boy with the killer side burns. The sun burns her eyes the next morning as Corinne groans, turning over trying to forget that the day had started. But a napkin hanging over the edge of her nightstand caused her to smile and sit up. She thinks back to the day before and with a little smile hurries to get ready, making sure to look perfect before using her Voyager to call Kevin.
“Hello?”
“Hey It’s Corinne.”
“Corinne! I’m guessing this means that you are ready to hang out with my brothers and me,” Kevin’s voice says with a laugh.
“You guessed right. So whenever you are ready so am I,” Corinne laughs also.
Kevin showed up twenty minutes later with a tall black haired boy who was bouncing off the walls and holding an unopened can of Red Bull. With a slight laugh Corinne took the can from him, placing it in her fridge and then she lead the boys out of her apartment listening to Joe, she learned his name with Kevin scowled him for whining about her taking his red bull away, happily sing some song or another about some girl. Getting in Kevin’s jeep was a fun experience cause Joe almost killed Corinne trying to get in the front seat before her, only to be told he was getting his sorry little butt in the back seat. Corinne laughed as Joe did just that grumbling the whole time and smiled widely when he sent her a little look. Kevin shook his head at his younger brother and speed off to their house in the hills.
It was a gorgeous house, with tons of room for the little boy playing in the front yard, and Corinne stared in awe.
“Hi I’m Frankie!”
The little voice startled her and she jumped still buckled in causing Joe to laugh. She shoots him a dirty look before unbuckling and getting out of the Jeep.
“Hi Frankie I’m Corinne.”
From that day forth, every single second of free time before them was spent together. Corinne grew to love the family, they basically adopted her as their own that first day. Frankie, the baby of the family was adorable and she was always in smiles around him. Nick was the type of boy most girls dreamed of and she loved just sitting listening to him play. Joe was the goofball and forever trying to make her laugh, occasionally she would but mainly when he hurt himself. Kevin though was amazing, he was kind and caring and genuine, he opened doors for her, bought her food and drink, wrapped his jacket around her at night. He was everything she wanted and more in a boyfriend or a friend and was glad she had him there for her. The boys had a concert and she was off so she was headed to surprise them, they didn’t know she was off and thought she had to work. She drove fast enough to make it in time for the last three songs, one of the horses got sick right before she planned to leave. Her seat in the front row had been empty until she showed up and when she say Kevin looking down at her she smiled up at him mouthing hi and waving. Kevin walked over to Joe and whispered something in his ear as the song came to an end. Joe nodded his agreement and looked over at Nick. Kevin played his way to his little brother and whispered in his ear. Nick smiled and waved at Corinne causing her to smile back as she waved at him. The next song starts and she looks mildly confused, its one of their old songs.
“This song goes out to a beautiful girl in the audience. You know who you are. Please be mine,” Kevin smiles down at her.
Corinne stares shocked at the boy who just spoke those words to her and all she can do is smile and nod. Soon the concert is done and she hurries backstage and into the arms of the boy who stole her heart. He steals a kiss briefly from her and then wraps his fingers into her own. She walks with him to everyone else and Nick smiles as Joe grumbles something about liking her first.
“I always fall for the older man,” Corinne laughs before giving Kevin a deep kiss.
