Chapter 16:
“Kelly!” Holly screamed. My head was pounding and my heart was beating faster than it had ever done before. My eyes flew open to find emptiness. The car was already gone and I was glad to know I wasn’t mortally wounded. But, my heart was. Where did he go? I could have sworn he was standing right there... right in front of me. Finally I could see those brown eyes so perfectly, no obstacles in my way.
“What the heck were you thinking?!” Holly grabbed my arm and gave me a tight hug. I was still searching around for that curly head.
“I..I don’t know.” I looked behind her. Behind me. Even scanned the parking lot. But still, he was nowhere.
“You just waltzed right into the intersection not even thinking for a second there were cars zooming right past you! You could have been killed.” Holly sighed. Was that a tear I saw springing from her bright blue eyes?
“Holly, I’m so sorry. My head…I was just thinking about so much and…” I mumbled. I still could barely catch my breath. I tried to focus on listening to my best friend but I couldn’t help but search for him again. Find that one face again.
“Just ... it’s alright, Kell. Come here.” She pulled me into another tight hug, squeezing all of the confusion out of me it seemed. Sighing, I stared straight into her eyes, forcing myself to explain.
“Holly, I cant get him off of my mind. He is always there…Everywhere I turn. I don’t even know him! How is this all possible? How could I feel so completely in love with some random boy? It just…doesn’t make sense.” It really didn’t make any sense. All I could do was wait…
“Kelly, it does make sense. You love him…” She grabbed my hand and squeezed it.
“I guess… I do…” I looked back up at her, almost wincing. It sounded so completely wrong yet so completely right at the same time.
“C’mon. You have to come with me!” She started running towards her mom’s car, waiting patiently in the parking lot.
“Wha- where are we going?” I screamed, her tugging me along, stumbling around, trying to keep my balance so I wouldn’t take a face plant right into the sidewalk.
“The mall. We need some retail therapy. As in getting some awesome dresses for the JB concert! Only 2 weeks away. Can you believe it?!” She shouted over her shoulder. I had completely forgotten… 2 weeks and I would finally see him again. It was almost unreal. Before I knew it, I was getting pushed into the all too familiar Jacobs car.
“Hey, Kelly! Is everything alright?” Holly’s mom asked, twisting around to face us in the backseat, Holly still holding my hand.
“Yeah, I guess.” I looked around me, still completely dazed.
“Well, you’re welcome to come with us to the mall, if you’d…”
“Of course she’s coming, Mom!” Holly yelled.
“Woo! Alrighty, here we go.” Mrs. Jacobs sat up straight and her eyes popped. The car slowly rolled forward and Holly hit her head lightly, faking embarrassment, I assumed.
I could hear Holly talking excitedly about dress fabrics and colors. I could hear cars whizzing by us (Mrs. Jacobs definitely wasn’t a speed demon). I could hear the low hum of a commercial playing over the radio. Something about car insurance. All I could do was stare out the window. Houses blurring together. Trees running at the speed of light. Mailboxes jutting out every few yards. All of this random stuff around me. But my mind only focused on his face. I know I had heard him. Whether I wanted to believe it or not, Nick Jonas was engraved on my heart forever….
“Kevin…Kevin…Kevin……KEVIN!” Nick was dodging jeans here and there. A couple sweater vests and a pair of Converse. But no, his older, and much wiser brother refused to listen no matter how many times he repeated his name.
Tearing through piles and piles of clothes, Kevin finally found what he was looking for…his car keys for his trusty old Jeep.
“Got ‘em! Ready?” Kevin ruffled a hand through his hair, stretching out his back.
“Kevin…you know we can’t just leave. We have press conferences, interviews, tour rehearsals…” Nick was always the sensible and realistic one.
“Nick! THAT’S IT!” Kevin dropped his car keys and started jumping up and down excitedly.
“Oh, no. Did Kevin find one of his old Barney toys again?” Joe suddenly walked into the room, hand stuffed in a Doritos bag. When did he ever stop eating?
“Hey!” Kevin pointed a finger at Joe, a smile still on his face.
“What’s going on?” Joe asked, his mouth stuffed.
“Nick needs to meet this girl. As soon as possible.” Kevin sighed, already planning everything out in his head, making him smile.
“Oh! That girl! Yeah, dude, Nick. She’s the one.”
“How would you know?” Nick asked, sadly. He couldn’t see how this was going to work at all.
“’Cause I totally saw your face when you talked about her…You definitely have never looked that way before.” Joe passed it off as it was complete common sense and that it was true fact. Nick knew it was…
“Kevin..what’s your plan?” Nick sighed.
“What if instead of going to her, we just meet up with her somewhere…as in a…date, per say?” Kevin smiled devilishly, winking at Joe.
“And how in the world do you plan on achieving this…date?” Nick asked.
“Date…as in…TOUR date!” Kevin smiled to himself again, thinking he was the cleverest human being to walk the earth.
“Kevin…you’re just a genius.” Joe joked.
“How do you know she’s gonna be there?” Nick asked. He had almost felt his hope rise at meeting her at the concert. But, there was a flaw. He had no idea she would be there. It could be a huge, humiliating mistake.
Kevin and Joe were silent. They had no idea how it would work out.
“Good question, Nick.” Kevin harrumphed, falling down on the floor among piles and piles of his fashionable clothes.
“See? It just wasn’t meant to be.” Nick looked down at his feet. Suddenly, someone slapped him.
“HEY! OUCH!” Nick yelled. Joe was staring at him, his hand up and ready to hit him again.
“Dude, what happened to Mr. Positive? C’mon this girl was made for you. Accept it!” Joe shoved Nick’s shoulder, almost pushing him over.
Nick sighed, realizing his brother…brothers, at that, were both completely right.
“C’mon, have some faith, bud.” Kevin squeezed Nick’s shoulder, smiling at him. Nick looked up at his brothers, seeing the trust and love in their eyes. They knew. He knew. Nick only wondered if she knew…
