Don’t Cast Me Away
Her icy blue eyes scanned around the room as she tried to find someone to keep her company during the long ride to the ski resort. She stopped spotting a tall brunette boy standing all by himself looking at the phone in his hand. She bounces over her fingers twirling the ring on her finger and she grins when she reaches him.
“Hey I’m Kaylee! Well Kay who are you,” she asks her voice bubbly?
His hazel eyes scan her body and she looks down only to laugh. Her clothing are sort of punk today and she just sounded like the biggest prep in the world. He smiles at her and she returns the look waiting for his answer.
“Kevin,” he says holding out his hand.
She shakes his hand and bounces on the balls of her feet as she waits.
“So are you excited for the trip,” Kevin asks with a laugh?
“Not really. I mean I like skiing but I’d rather be on a golf course. My mom forced me into it. See we just moved here and she thinks it will be a good way for me to make friends. So far you are the only one who has talked to me which is kind of depressing I love meeting new people,” Kaylee frowns.
“Where did you move from?”
He was slowly loosening up and she was seeing a different side of the reserved kid who was hiding in the corner. She grins as she supplies her answer.
“Jersey. I miss my Jersey shore,” Kaylee answers.
“I lived in New Jersey until about 2 years ago,” Kevin says.
“Cool. So why are you here. You look to be about my age and I’m a good three years older than everyone else,” Kaylee says raising her eyebrows.
“My little brothers are going, so my parents asked if I would go too,” Kevin replies pointing out his brothers.
The taller one has straight blackish brown hair and a bright pink hoodie on with blue skinny jeans. The shorter one has wavy brown hair and a button up shirt and blue skinny jeans.
“Wow I see all three of you have the same… um fashion sense,” Kaylee teases.
“Yea… yea… So let’s go. You want to hang with me on the bus since my brothers abandoned me,” Kevin asks?
“Yupp that was the plan when I first came over here,” Kaylee nods.
They walk together onto the bus and spend the six-hour ride talking about everything and anything that came along. Skiing the next day was fun at first but then it happened, Kaylee fell and heard the sickening snap of her arm. She almost cried right then and there seeing the look on Kevin’s face, but held the tears in as he helped her down the mountain and got the leader of the retreat to drive them to the hospital. The doctor bandaged her arm in a tight bright pink cast and she smiled looking at Kevin’s shocked reaction to how calm she was.
“I’ve broken a lot of bones,” she says brushing her brown hair out of her eyes.
“Really?”
“Yea I’ll tell you about it,” Kaylee grins.
And she did going into detail with each and every break. She smiles over how she busted her leg when running on the beach, while he cringes at the story. She laughs telling about the time her friend pushed her and she tripped over her own two feet and broke her ankle. She cringes a little though telling him about the fight she got in when she was thirteen that had resulted in her crooked nose. He tells her of his many injuries, none quite as bad or colorfully told as hers were and they wait for the doctor to say she can go home.
“And now I have a really cool story about how I broke my arm… again,” Kaylee says with a laugh.
“Yea but it seems like you would want to stop having the stories,” Kevin says.
“No dude they break the ice… So I have a ton of sharpies in my hotel room you want to be the first to sign my cast,” Kaylee asks him?
“If we ever get out of here sure,” Kevin laughs.
Four hours later, right around dinner time, Kevin and Kaylee walk back into the ski lodge and spot the rest of their group waiting. They walk over and sit next to Joe and Nick, Kevin’s brothers who he had a band with, waiting like everyone else for the leader to explain why we are sitting in the middle of the lodge.
“Well kids as most of you know we have the Jonas Brothers here with us,” Nick, Joe and Kevin blush then, “And since Kaylee broke her arm and can’t go on the slopes anymore.”
Kaylee cuts in right then with a grin, “I blame it on Kevin! He was watching me ski!”
“Like I was saying,” glaring at Kaylee doesn’t make him seem nice, “the boys have a concert that got planned for tomorrow and Kaylee can’t ski. And I can’t leave you all here alone with Marge,” his wife, “it looks like we all have to go home.”
The protests come instantly and it only takes a few second for Kaylee to come up with an idea.
“Hey! I have a plan man!”
Everyone turns to her and she blushes slightly before talking.
“So since we have to go cause they have a concert and I can’t ski. Why not let us rent a car, my mom will totally pay for it, and drive back. I mean there are three… I mean two of us who can legally drive,” Kaylee says.
“But you broke your arm… can you drive with a broken arm,” Kevin asks her?
“Yea I have before. I told you I break lots of bones. So is it a plan or not,” she questions looking everyone over?
“We’re cool with it,” the Jonas boys say with smiles.
“Well if you’re sure…”
“I’m sure. They’re sure. Let’s get us a rental car,” Kaylee smiles.
“Kay you are brilliant you know that,” Kevin asks in her ear?
“Yea but I like hearing you say it.”
He laughs shaking his head and they all walk together upstairs to pack and get a rental car. An hour later they are packed in a small car, Kevin at the wheel as Joe and Nick try to sleep in the backseat and Kaylee fiddles with the radio station. Hearing a song that she’s never heard before she leaves the radio until Joe and Nick complain.
“You’re a fan! We’re locked in a car with a fan! No,” Joe cries.
“Wait this is you guys… Hahah someone sounds like a little girl. I mean…”
Kevin laughs at his brother’s expense and both boys send him looks from the backseat.
“So tell me about your band, your music. I want to hear it all,” Kaylee says.
They do just that explaining how it all started with Nick, how Joe never wanted to be a singer, and how Kevin taught himself guitar. She sits listening for hours happily until Kevin starts to yawn and Nick drifts off.
“My turn,” Kaylee says overly hyper.
Soon Kaylee is driving with three sleeping boys in her car. She just laughs and sings along with all the songs that play on the radio trying to make the time fly. They arrive back at the church where they met and she looks at the three boys who are sleeping. With a sigh she closes her eyes and falls into her own sleep. When she wakes up it’s almost an hour later and she is alone in the car. She frowns, realizing that she will never see the boys again. Yawning she steps out of the car and stretches her arms raised high about her head and that’s when she spots it. Curly letters are on her cast, a name, a number, a message and with a smile she reads it over.
