Chapter 24
3 months later
Yawning deeply I shook my head trying to keep my eyes from sliding close. Glancing at the clock for the 12th time in the last 5 minutes, I sighed slightly resting my head on my hand that was propped up on the cold desk by my elbow.
How long can a stinkin’ Algebra class take?
The past three months had been agonizing not only with school but with acting also. Although going to acting classes had become less and less awkward, a lot of the girls had flown off to Hollywood to shoot TV shows or be put in front of higher casting directors and not being one of those girls was definitely irritating. Devon had scored a role on the next Disney channel movie that would come out next summer, while other girls were given small role auditions on common TV shows to get their carrier started. Our class basically got smaller and smaller, only waiting for new actors to come in and start the process just like we did…except Gabby and I stayed behind bored to death and ready to break through the walls. School, however, was just as agonizing as acting class. As the months went by, I only looked forward to the ending of it all. School work had just become a hassle between my sessions of deep thinking of how I would get into another audition. If I wasn’t distracted with my fading irritation of missing the audition, I was thinking of Nick. I honestly had to say he was the one that kept me going through the day. Catching myself randomly smiling as I though about him even during the lingering Science lectures I endured everyday, I had officially declared myself crazy…but I didn’t mind. The thing I woke up for everyday was to here his voice on the phone at 4:00 pm right after school when we dropped everything and called each other. It was just my luck to be crazy about a guy who kissed me then had to leave for who knows how long…but I held onto every bit of him I had left praying that I would see him in front of me for even a split second.
“Okay class, so let’s review quadratics,” Mr. Hollingsworth, my algebra teacher, paced in front of the class room as I let out a deep sigh, leaning against my desk that sat in the back of the class room.
Two words….kill… me
The suspense was killing me. Finals were next week and I didn’t think I could take one more millisecond of quadratics, or the chemical breakup of atoms, or discussing Hamlet. In fact, if I heard the words ‘solve for x’ once more I was probably going to explode.
“Okay, so on number 34 on your review, you need to use the principles of quadratics to solve for…”
3…2…1…prepare for explosion, cause: solving-for-x overload
ZZZZZzzzzZZZZZ
Jumping slightly grabbed my purse the was slung over my chair as if that would make vibrating would stop, Mr. Hollingsworth switched his stare from the packet that sat on the podium in front of him to my startled face.
“Is there a problem Miss Chase?” Mr. Hollingsworth asked raising an eye brow as I quickly removed my hands from holding my purse rapidly wiping them on my jeans and snapping my eyes down to my desk to avoid the stares of everyone in the room.
“No…um…No, not at all, just my purse was….my purse was falling off the chair and I didn’t want it to...touch…the…floor,” I cleared my throat slightly searching for the first answer off the top of my head.
Yeah…good…that works…
“Okay, well, just settle it down back there and focus on math,” Mr. Hollingsworth slightly laughed turning back to the white board to write and equation.
“Yes Sir…” I softly answer slipping my phone out of my purse and hiding it under the desk. Quickly snapping it open I clicked the ‘open message’ button and glanced around the room to check if anyone was watching.
Hello Beautiful,
What’s shakin’?
- Nick
Biting my lip and smiling, I quickly started to type back, when I felt someone’s eyes watching me. Whipping my head to my left where I felt the gaze I saw Missa peering at my phone.
“Who ya texting?” Missa whispered. Missa had always been my friend, she was nice and all but a bit crazy. We only really talked during Algebra, but she was one of the girls at school who didn’t only tell me how smart I was and how they wished they were me just to get answers on the next English test.
“No one,” I whispered back trying my hardest to wipe the smile off my face as I thought about Nick’s light voice whispering into my ear.
“Yeah…no one, I’m sure it is no one because you are completely not paying attention in Math and have that goofy smile on your face for no good reason right?” Missa smirked peering yet again at my phone. She had always been the match maker type, but I couldn’t let her know who it was…she would definitely tell everyone about it, and I didn’t know what would happen after that. Letting out a small sigh, I bit my lip and turned back to my text message.
Hey Rockstar,
Algebra [blech] what is up with you?
- Kati
“Ooo, Rockstar? Miss Kati Chase is getting her flirt on,” Missa giggled as I rolled my eyes trying to fight off the red rising to my cheeks.
ZZZZzzzzZZZ
Ouch, Algebra. We are packing to go to the UK, I wish you were coming with me though ;)
- Nick
-
Butterflies rushed through my stomach as I glanced up at Missa who was bent over and vigorously watching me type my reply.
Me 2 : ) , I would do anything to get out of here
- Kati
ZZZzzzzZZZ
Well, Miss Chase, I do know somebody’s birthday is coming up, and I will just have to do something for that now won’t I and maybe that will get you out of there…or maybe not, you never know
- Nick
ZZZZzzzzZZZ
Wait, my birthday? It’s in July…wait how did you know that?
- Kati
ZZZzzzZZZ
I just know… : ) But, anyway, you will have to prepare, because something big is going to happen trust me ;)
- Nick
-
I quickly snapped my head up to glance at Missa who smiled widely.
“Eeeeeeppp,” Missa squealed maybe a little too loud.
“Is there a problem back there girls? “ Mr. Hollingsworth said in a stern voice as both Missa and I glanced up to see him staring us down curiously.
“Uh…no, we are just so excited about…the periodic table, good stuff Mr. Holly, good stuff,” Missa said sending me a panicking glance as I shook my head slightly in disbelief at Missa’s attempt to cover the situation.
“Yes, Missa, it is good stuff, but the problem is that we are in Algebra, and the Periodic Table belongs in the science room, so if you and Miss Chase could please focus so you can study for the final, that would be great,” Mr. Hollingsworth fake smiled turning back to the white board and Missa slightly giggling turned back to her review.
ZZZZzzzzZZZZ
Periodic Table? I don’t think so…are we talking to Nick again?
- Gabby
Okay, you know so much it is creepy…
- Kati
ZZZzzzzZZZ
Texting Nick during school are we?
- Faye
Okay…I’m not that predictable…am I?
How do you know these things?
- Kati
Faye had become more of a big sister to me over the past months. We texted quite a lot. She would give me the low down in the Jonas world and I would give her the low down on the real world…not that I could beat any of her stories, she was there to always remind me that Nick was missing me just as much I was him. Plus, I also would be checking up on her and Kevin which always resulted in some AH-dorable story that always made me smile, no matter what my day was like.
ZZZZzzzzZZZZ
Oh, I don’t know, Nick is sitting on the couch with that cute little smile on his face that he always has when he talks to you…so I’m taking that I was right? AH! Me and my mad skills
-Faye
ZZZZzzzzZZZZ
Well, PAY ATTENTION, because I’m certainly not going to, and you are probably going to have to help me on my math review so I don’t fail the 9th grade ;]
- Gabby
Okay, personally, I loved getting all these text messages during class…but seeing that Mr. Hollingsworth is constantly checking from his desk if I’m doing my review or not and I was having to reply to 3 people at once… I decided if I got another text message I probably was going to go bonkers.
ZZZZzzzzZZZZ
I have to go now. I’ll call you at 4.
Miss you
-Nick
Okay…so I can make one exception
Shaking my head slightly as I watched Nick lean against the arm of the couch smiling shyly at his phone, I giggled a little at how much Nick liked Kati. It was honestly adorable.
“Whatcha thinking about?” Kevin whispered into my ear as he wrapped his arms around me from the back gently turning me around to face him. His priceless smile warmed my cheeks and released shivers through my body as I nudged my head toward Nick.
“What? That still Nick hasn’t packed yet?” Kevin slightly laughed looking over at Nick who still leaned against the arm of the couch smiling at the screen of his iphone as Joe scampered around the room looking for his socks.
“No, well, yes…because…well…” I stammered thinking probably too hard about the subject.
“You are so cute when you are confused,” Kevin whispered quickly pressing his lips against mine and pulling me closer into a deep kiss and placing his hands lightly on my hips rubbing my sides with his thumbs. Chills surged down my spin as I slightly smiled then pulled away shaking my head slightly at him in playful disbelief.
“I can’t believe that you would use my confusion for an excuse to kiss me,” I smirked at him.
“Oh, I don’t need an excuse,” Kevin said leaning in again. Suddenly Joe cleared his throat. Kevin pulled away slightly frustrated yet with a small smile still on his face as he let me go and turn his gaze toward Joe.
“Joe, when yo..” Kevin started as Joe quickly turned away to squish the top of his suitcase shut.
“We’ve been over this before…SINGLE and PROUD,” Joe said with a smirk on his face as he looked Kevin straight in the eye. I glanced at Nick who still stood frozen, gazing at his phone as if it was Kati herself.
“Yeah, well, I’m going to use that against you someday, and trust me…it will be soon,” Kevin laughed turning back to his own suitcase.
“Don’t go all fortune cookie on me, just because you said that, I’ll make sure I don’t meet anyone,” Joe said.
“Just wait and see, just wait and see…It will be soon,” Kevin shook his head slightly zipping his Louis Vutton personal suitcase shut.
You never ever leave my mind
My sweet, sweet Madeline
Every time I look into your eyes
I feel like I'm alive
And I can barely make a sound
Whenever you're around
You can find me hiding in the crowd
Next time you come to town
Every time I want to say hello
Every time I want to st…
Nick swept his phone up to his ear while the rest of us snapped our eyes over to stare at his now anxious face.
“Hello?” Nick said quickly, “Yes, this is him…” Kevin shot me a confused look as I shrugged and looked at a zoned out Joe who was staring at the floor probably still looking for his socks.
“YES! That’s awesome, that’s so great, thank you so much…yeah, um…well, I don’t know if we can be on…I mean we have that day off, but I was kind of hoping…oh, well, I guess, well…okay…let me talk to my manager…but…yeah…okay...thanks…bye,” Nick said changing his tone for extremely excited to slightly frustrated and hanging up his phone.
“Wait…so what’s going on? Who was that on the phone,” Kevin asked stepping toward me as I watched Nick’s irritated expression.
“Well, you see I got Kati and Gabby to minor role on this show…so I could pay them back for the whole auditions…and the show said they really liked what they saw in their profiles, but they want us to be on the show also…and I’m afraid they won’t take no for an answer” Nick faded looking down at his green converse as Joe snapped his head up to focus in on the conversation at hand.
“That’s great…did you talk to mom and dad about it?” Kevin asked urging Nick to say more.
“Yeah…they were fine with the whole Kati and Gabby thing, but I don’t know if us being on the show is going to work…” Nick said snapping his head up to look at Kevin with his deep, glazed over brown eyes.
“I’m sure it will be fine for us to be on the sh…” Kevin continued focusing on Nick’s nervous expression.
“No…Kevin, I don’t think it will work…” Nick said sternly cutting Kevin off.
“Well, what show is it?” Joe added in as I exchanged glances with him and Kevin.
Something tells me that this isn’t going to go as Nick planned it…
