Chapter One
Kevin's POV
Joe and Ashleigh said their goodbyes before leaving for their honeymoon. Lexy and I had helped set it up. They were going to a private island, away from all of the noise of the real world. Nothing could bother them, and they couldn’t bother us either. They have been overly paranoid with Lexy lately. Ashleigh, being the cautious godmother that she is, has been making sure that Lexy is doing everything right.
I looked down on the table at the little envelope in front of me. I was tempted to open it and take a peak, but I knew it wasn’t just my decision. It’s been a week since we had gotten it, and we still haven’t decided wether to look or not. I sat and watched a movie with Madison.
“What are you watching?”, I asked her.
“Kitty!”, she replied. I looked at the screen to see that it was The Lion King. I chuckled to myself. She began to fall asleep in my lap, but was awakened by her mother.
“Kevin!! Come here!!” I ran as fast as I could up the stairs to find her in bed, clutching her round belly.
“What’s wrong?”, I asked in a panicked tone. I went to her side and tried to get her to sit.
“Something’s wrong, Kevin”, her voice was weak. I could tell she was in pain. I didn’t think twice. I led her down to the car, and then called Frankie. We only live two blocks from my parents, so he was there in a matter of minutes.
“Can you please keep an eye on Maddie while I take Lexx to the hospital?”, I asked. I didn’t even let him answer. I just jumped into the car and drove.
~Later that day~
I walked into the room to see her sitting there. Tears formed in her eyes and I felt mine doing the same.
“They said I lost it. Like, as if it were a remote our something.”, the tears fell faster and she began to cry harder. I grabbed her in my arms and cried with her.
“Lexx, I love you. I want you to know that. No matter what happens, we will make it through.”. I tried my best to comfort her, but I knew it was only making it worse.
“The doctor said I have to stay for a few days. What is Madison going to think?”, she asked. She was crying to hard that it was difficult to understand her. Her skin was pale and she was so weak. She was heart broken.
“She’ll be fine. We’ll all be fine.” I was trying to make myself feel better too, but it wasn’t working. “Did the doctor says whether it was—“, I was cut off by her shaking her head back and fourth.
“I told them I didn’t want to know until you were here.”
“We’ll look at it together, when you’re up to it.” I feared that she would never be up to it. She was so scared, so hurt, so enclosed to the rest of the world. It wasn’t the Lexy that I knew.
Joe's POV
I woke up to the sunlight, but to no Ashleigh. I looked over to see her sitting in the chair, watching the television. She was laughing at something and had the biggest smile on her face.
“Hello Beautiful What are you watching?” I must have scared her a little, because she jumped.
“Well, you parents snuck something in your suitcase.”she said, as she sat on the foot of the bed. I raised my head to the TV. It was a dvd of my childhood. Embarrassing moments and all. I couldn’t help but chuckled at it all.
“I was such a cute kid”, I joked.
“Hon, you looked Chinese. And that bowl cut!”, she laughed.
“That was in! Excuse me for forgetting you weren’t an ‘80's kid.”
“I don’t think being born in ‘89 is an “‘80's kid”. Besides, that haircut was more in the ‘70's anyway.” I laughed.
“So, what would you like to do today, Mrs. Jonas?”, I asked. She pretended to think.
“Mrs. Jonas? Hmm . . . that has a nice ring to it. Well, have you seen it outside yet?” She pointed over to the window. The sunlight that had waken me up was actually lightening. A full on thunderstorm was happening outside the window, ruling going to the beach out.
“Let’s stay in, today. I wanna see this video.”, I suggest. She nodded her head and started the DVD over again. My dad’s voice came on.
“Joseph and Ashleigh, I hope you see this video. Ash, we just want to show you what kind of family you have gotten yourself into. Joseph may be a little clutzy, and ditzy, and nutty sometimes, but you, especially, know why we all love him. We are blessed to have you become part of the family, no matter how crazy things get, we will always be there for you.” I looked over at her at the same time she look at me. I just smiled and nodded my head. It was true, she was now part of my family. Her and I were starting a new family. Then, the horrible baby pictures began to roll. Me on Santa’s lap. Me with my Barney shirt and slippers. And, even worse. My mother giving me a bath.
“Awkward . ..”, I chimed in
“It’s not awkward. It’s cute. I’m happy to be a part of such a great family. Remind me to thank your dad when we get home.” I grabbed her in my arms and kissed her on the forehead. “How does shopping sound, today?”, I asked.
“Joseph, I’m a girl. How do you think it sounds?”, she laughed. I got ready and we were off.
“There weren’t many stores on the little island, but we did come across a JC Penny’s which was good enough. I noticed Ashleigh gravitating towards one particular section. The baby section.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”, I asked. She immediately nodded her head and picked up a little green outfit.
“It’s perfect!”, she exclaimed. She pointed out something on the pocket. It was a little lion.
“It sure is.”
Nick's POV
Sarah and I sat on the side of lake, soaking our feet in.
“You never fail to amaze me, Nicholas.”, she said as she rested her head on my shoulder. “This is so beautiful. I’ve never had a real picnic before.
“Well, I’m glad I’m the one to share it with you. Sarah, I have something that–“, he was interrupted by the buzzing of his cell phone. I looked down to see that it was Kevin. I just put it back in my pocket and continued with what I was doing. “It was just my brother. I’m sure the news can wait.”
“Nick, he’s your brother. What if it’s about the baby?”, Sarah protested. Kevin was always calling me about the stupidest little things. Once, he called because Chip and Dale was on TV. I didn’t feel like sitting through another five minutes of that again. I gave Sarah my sad eyes and reassured her that everything was fine. “So, what did you want to tell me?”, she asked.
“Oh yea. Kevin asked me to ask you something. Joe and Ash are Madison’s god parents and they want me to be the baby’s god father.”, I started.
“Aww . . . That’s so sweet!”
“Well, Lexy and Kevin want to know if you’d be the god mother? Since, Brielle is a bit young.” Her eyes lit up.
“Of course I will!”, she agreed. “Now, we have to call him!” I pulled my phone out of my pocket again and dialed his number. He answered quickly, a little too quickly. Sarah grabbed the phone and exclaimed, “Of course I’ll be the little baby’s god mother!”. She giggled and handed the phone back.
“Uh . . . Nick”, his tone of voice worried me.
“What’s wrong, Kev?”
“Lexy and I are at the hospital. Can you get here, I could really use someone. I already called mom and dad.” He sounded like he was crying. My stomach was doing cart wheels. Why hadn’t I answered my phone earlier. Was I really that selfish? I looked over at Sarah, who was still beaming with excitement. Her expression changed when I told her what he said. We both rushed off to the hospital, anticipating why they were there. A thousand reasons rushed through my head, but I kept going back to one. The baby. My foot was heavy on the peddle as I saw flashing lights in the rearview mirror. Not now, Not now!
