ok, so I know Golden just ended yesterday...but both Tina and I are really excited about starting this, so here you go!!! Oh, and the POV changed from third person to first, but it flows better....I think.
Under The Silver Stars
“Let me be the one loving you when you’re weak. For all of the strength you need, you can come to me.”
The last thing I remembered was clinging furiously to Nick, crying my eyes out. As I stared out the window of the cab into the pouring rain, I tried to make sense of what had happened. One minute, I was fighting with Nick, the next, I was sobbing into his shoulder. I leaned my head against the cool glass of the window, willing myself to remember something.
Suddenly, everything came flooding back. Kevin had called me, frantic. There was yelling and the blare of sirens in the background, and what he was saying was barely audible. He said that his car had slid off the side of the road, and hit a tree. He assured me that he was fine, but I didn’t believe him, and judging by the way Nick was acting, I thought I was right. Thinking back, I realized that he hadn’t said much about Joe’s condition, other than the fact that he had been on the side that hit the tree. Nick and I had left immediately, hailing a cab and calling his family on the way to the hospital.
As I sat lost in my thoughts, it dawned on me that Tina was probably unaware of what had happened. I took out my phone, dialed her number from memory, and pressed it to my ear. Tina picked up after the second ring, greeting me cheerfully.
“Hey, Brit!” Gavin DeGraw was playing loudly in the background, and she turned it down before continuing. “What’s up?”
I tried to steady my voice as I spoke, not wanting to worry Tina any more than she already would be. “Tina, there’s…been an…an accident.”
“What? Who was it? Is everyone alright?” she asked.
“Joe,” I paused, fighting back the tears that were stinging my eyes. “And Kevin. He said that he’s fine, but Tina…I don’t believe him. He said Joe’s in bad shape, but he really didn’t elaborate. I-I don’t know if you want to fly back here, but I thought you should at least know what’s going on. But, we’re almost at the hospital, so I need to go.”
“Alright Brit. I’m looking for a flight right now…I’ll get there as soon as possible. Call me if you find out anything.”
I hung up, following Nick out of the cab. We walked through the revolving doors of the hospital, just as a group of EMT’s pushed their way through. I had to grab Nick to keep my balance, as I watched them wheel Joe past me on a stretcher. All I could see through the gap of people was that his face was covered in blood and glass shards. That alone was enough to make me sick, because I don’t do blood…at all. Kevin came limping in behind them, refusing medical attention. He pulled me into a small hug and then continued following Joe’s stretcher to the Emergency room. Nick caught up to him, and they began whispering to each other. I desperately wanted to know what they were saying, but I didn’t want to be any closer to the blood than absolutely necessary.
We were directed to seats in a crowded waiting room, and I sat down quietly, trying to sort everything out. Joe was obviously hurt more than Kevin had let on, but I didn’t know to what extent. The night had been such a blur. I couldn’t shake the thought of Joe being angry with me, being that the last thing I’d said to him was to tell him that I’d cheated on him. Nick sat down next to me, staring at his feet. Unable to take it any longer, I turned to him and wrapped my arms around his shoulders. All we could do was wait, and I didn’t want to do it alone.
