Joe woke up to the sound of gunshots and screaming outside. He looked out the window. Amber, the girl that lived next door to him, was standing up against a wall with two men pointing a gun to her head. Joe had met Amber in preschool, and by kindergarten, they were the best of friends. That had all changed once they got to 7th grade. Joe began dating, so did Amber. they grew further and further apart until they hated each other. Without thinking, the boy slipped on his shoes and ran outside in his pajamas.
"Hey!" he yelled. The men turned to look at Joe.
"Joe, get out of here!" Amber said.
"Why don't you pick on somone your own size?" Joe said.
"Stop!" Amber shouted "You don't know what you're doing!" With a quick blow, the men shot Joe in the arm and then ran away. Amber ran over to Joe.
"Amber." Joe said "Save yourself. I'll be fine."
"No. You risked your life for me. I'm not letting you die!"
"Go."
"No.I'm taking you to the hospital."
"Listen to me. I'll be fine. You go get some sleep."
"How do you expect me to sleep when my friend is in a dying position?"
"I thought you hated me."
"I thought you hated me."
"Well, I don't."
"Do you trust me?"
"Yes."
"Then come with me."
"I can't stand up."
"Then I'll carry you."
"No, just leave me alone."
"No. I'll stand by your side all night if I have to. I'll stand by you." Amber took off her scarf and wrapped it around Joe's arm where he had been shot. She picked the boy up and carried him to her car and put him in. She drove him to the hospital as fast as she could without getting a ticket. Joe passed out in the car.
Amber paced around Joe's hospital room.
"Honey, pacing won't help. He's unconcious and has been for a half hour." the nurse said.
"Is he gonna be okay?" Amber said.
"We don't know." Joe's eyes slowly opened.
"Amber?" He said "Why didn't you go home?"
"Because I told you I would stay by your side."
"You can go home now."
"No. I'll stand by you. I'm not gonna let anyone hurt you. I'll stand by you."
