I told you SOON, didn't I?
Enjoy!
We are young but don’t don’t don’t.
Ashley raced through the suburbs, Nick clutching the seat in nervousness. Surely if the police were near, they’d get her for speeding. But looking over at her with wide, anxious eyes, she didn’t seem to pay that fact any attention.
“Where are we going?” he asked after a few tense moments of silence. She’d slowed down to a steady pace, and he had no idea where he now was.
Ashley smiled at him, her eyes on the road. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll have you home before bedtime.” Nick wasn’t sure if she meant it playfully or if she was making fun of him, so he just remained silent.
She eventually slowed down and pulled into a small convenience store Nick had never seen on the outskirts of town. Nick didn’t know how they avoided getting caught by the police, but he didn’t question it as they sat in the parking lot of the shop. He had to admit that it was a great experience now that it was over; the adrenaline rushing through his veins and the fear of not knowing what was going to happen next. He couldn’t help but grin with excitement. He then looked over at Ashley, and began to study her features.
She wasn’t the usual girl he was attracted to. Instead of a wide inviting smile, he was met with a scowl and mischievous green eyes. Her curly brown hair was in a messy ponytail and not painstakingly pieced into a certain hairstyle. But none of those girls gave him the rush of adrenaline she’d provided him with in just a few minutes of knowing her.
“You can quit staring at me anytime you know.” She said, acknowledging his curious eyes and causing him to blush again. He was struck at how cool she was being. Not cold and unfriendly, but cool and cautious.
“Sorry.” He mumbled, finding his voice. “Thanks for getting me out of Nation’s house. My family would have killed me if I were caught there. “
Ashley didn’t reply, she just nodded, leaving the two in silence. Her phone went off, and she glanced at it with a scowl before pressing the ignore button. “I’ve gotta go inside here for a minute or two,” she finally said. “I’ll be right back.”
Before Nick could respond, she’d opened the car door and rushed inside the store. He looked around the flashy car, wishing he could drive something of that caliber. He couldn’t drive yet, but this car was definitely one he’d had his eye on.
No less than five minutes after Ashley had walked in the store, she was back in the car. He saw her shove a large wad of cash in her purse, and heard rattling coming from it, but chose not to question it. It was none of his business where she’d gotten the money, he was just happy that he would be home before he could get in trouble.
“So where do you live, Bible boy?” she asked as she cranked the engine, the car rumbling to life.
Nick scowled in return, not liking her apparent choice of nickname for him. “It’s Nick. Not Bible boy.” He replied.
He watched as she rolled her green eyes and adjusted the volume on the previously silent radio. A loud rock song blasted through the speakers. “Whatever,” she said. “do you want to go home or not?”
Nick was torn. He did need to go home, but the adrenaline rush he’d just experienced was nagging at him, wanting more action. But he didn’t know how to phrase his desire. Giving her his address, he heaved a sigh.
Within minutes she was driving through his neighborhood, slowing to a halt a block away from his house. He thanked her wordlessly and prepared to get out when she stopped him.
“You don’t have to go home, you know.” She said.
Nick’s brown eyes flashed confusion as he turned to face her. “What do you mean I don’t have to go home?”
Ashley ran a hand through her curly hair, a small charm bracelet dangling from her arm. “You’re different Bib—Nick. I know you’ve been craving adventure. Don’t ask me how I know, just trust me when I say that I’ve seen your kind before—rarely. I know you have a lot of people telling you what to do and what not to do. So how about you go on an adventure with me and we can do whatever we want?”
Nick was torn between his desire to do just as she said and the need to go home. “I don’t know you.” He said, using that as an excuse.
But this time, a true smile lit up her face, and Nick was taken aback by the sincerity of it. “So?” she replied.
“Let me grab some stuff from my house.” He said before he could even think about what he was saying. “Meet me back here in fifteen?”
“Make it twenty.” She answered, dismissing him with a wave and another smile. Nick got out of the car and watched as she sped off.
What had he just gotten himself into?
