You were the first friend I made when I moved to California. I remember how you came to our front door, in a typical friendly neighbour fashion with a plate of brownies in your hands. You smiled brightly as you introduced yourself as ‘Halle, from the house across the street to the right.’ You looked at me and shot a mischievous smile offering up the brownies. Assuring me they were amazing, since they were your ‘specialty’ and really the only thing you could bake apart from chocolate chip cookies.How could I say no to you? The confident neighbour with the beautiful smile and light brown eyes that were sparkling against the black night around you. There was always something special about you, I let you in and introduced you to my family, the brownies disappeared in under a minute, but you stayed for hours.
That one Wednesday night turned into a flow of constant phone calls, visits, IM sessions and texts, but we had our weekly ritual. Every Wednesday night at 9.15pm, we’d lie on a picnic rug in my backyard, a plate of brownies or cookies you made by our side and we’d just talk and stare at the stars in the vast nights sky.
Every Wednesday, no matter what.

Do you know what you did to me? The way you were always completely, and sometimes brutally honest in everything you said. I remember playing you countless songs on my acoustic and you’d give it a rating out of ten, with a long review following it. A tad bit more criticism than what I usually heard, but it built me up, made me stronger and better. I remember telling you one night that the record label wanted to change the title of ‘Australia’ so we weren’t singing about only one country. But you just laughed and adamantly told me that a country with cool accents and kangaroos deserved to have a song named after it. I couldn’t agree more.
But the way you curled your light brown hair around your finger when you were talking, or how you had a witty comment for everything were just bonuses. It was your personality that struck me in the heart, the way you could make me interested in the most bizarre things, like your protest that Aardvarks were unappreciated due to their extra ‘a’, or how I had to have my buttered popcorn with icing sugar on it, well that last one didn’t really stick, but we shared everything with each other, there were no secrets. You listed to me the places you wanted to travel to, and the courses you wanted to get into for college. We’d lie there for hours in the cool air, blanketed by the deep peaceful sky. You’d point out different constellations, orions belt, the big dipper and then you looked over at me one night and pointed to a particular star.
‘Do you see that star Joe? The one that’s shining the brightest?” You said quietly, I nodded and you turned your head back up to stare at the shining star, a smile curved on your face. “That’s our star, the star of our friendship; it’ll always be there no matter what, just like us.” You breathed in satisfied, and peered over at me, giving me one of those half smiles that sent my head into a spin, but you were right.

Every Wednesday night we’d find our star, it became a game of ‘who can spot our star first’. You’d always win, not that I really minded. I’ll let you in on a secret, sometimes I’d purposely let you win, just so I could see your smile victoriously and laugh as you gave me a hug, declaring yourself the winner. It was those times that let me relax de-stress and just think clearly, not worrying about the music business or how many tickets we had left to sell. Then on a cool summer evening you made a bet with me. You told me that in two years time, I’d have made it; you promised me that in exactly two years we were going to be the biggest thing in the world. I told you that it was a dream, but probably wouldn’t happen. We shook on it.

It became harder to see each other, I went on tour with my brothers, but we made it work. Every Wednesday at 9.15 your time, no matter where I was, Arizona, New Jersey, Toronto…I’d call. Even if I could talk for only a minute, we had a standing appointment and a friendship star. You’d tell me that you were staring at our star and that it was shining brighter than last time, a sure sign that I had played a good show. You would munch on brownies and cookies, the only food items I craved for…and you, my best friend in the whole world. I would miss your half smiles, and vivacious laugh, and every little random fact about camels that you could tell. Hello Beautiful was written for you; sure I’d exaggerated a few lines. ‘Hello Beautiful, it’s been a long time, since my phones rang, and you’ve been that my line.’ Yeah, technically that was about an hour and ten minutes, but in my books…that’s a lifetime.

It was 18 months, 2 weeks and 3 days since you had first appeared on my doorstep, with those famous brownies. I was on yet another tour, but today was different, today was the day that would change my life and shatter my heart. I had just gotten back on the tour bus after a crazy concert when my phone rang, it was your mum. She told me something that I never wanted to hear. She told me that an hour ago you were driving home when a drunk driver smashed his car into yours, going 180 mph. You both veered violently off the road, he slammed into a tree, your car flipped over…four times. The scene was a complete mess, the car a total wreck and you…what chance did you have?
I flew straight home from New York, but it was too late. Fifteen hours in surgery, one crash and eighteen years of life taken. Just like that, you were gone. My best friend had been taken away from me, by a drunken man. You didn’t deserve to die, you were ready to take life on, full force and show everyone what you could do, but the plans all went wrong. Your eyes closed, your smile vanished and your heart stopped beating…you were gone.

It wasn’t supposed to end like this, I never got to tell you goodbye, I just wanted one more night together, under the stars to play you a new song ‘So far away mixed with A little bit longer’. I want to hear you criticise me, and then give me a charming smile. I wanted to tell you so much more, talk about everything and anything. You helped me become who I am, and I never even got the chance to thank you. As I’m lying here alone, on the picnic run in my backyard staring at the sky, I need to let you know that you won. You won our bet. I made it Halle, two years exactly and I made it. But do you want to know why I made it? Because of you, you’re constant encouragement, faith, radiating confidence and you’re love. It’s no wonder why God wanted to meet you so badly; you’re the most amazing person the world ever had. I just want you to know that I made it because of you and as lonely as I am on this rug I’ve spotted our star, and I can honestly tell you that it’s shining brighter than ever before. It’s no longer our friendship star, it’s you. Shining down on me from above, the most beautiful and amazing star in the entire galaxy, and I know that although you aren’t here with me now, you’ll always be watching over me, shining down on me forever.
