We’re Still Standing Strong
Chapter One
“Only two more weeks?” Bre cried out, looking up from the calendar in dismay from her spot at the dining room table. “What on earth am I going to do when you two go back to college?”
Ashley and Melissa looked up in confusion from the movie they were watching on Ashley’s couch. Their summer shifts at the venue had ended the day before, so they decided to spend a day relaxing to celebrate. The rest of the month before had gone off without a hitch once they arrived home from their little “vacation” in New Hampshire. Gina ran the venue very successfully, bringing in more satisfied customers than Sean could ever dream of. The day had started off happily, so Mel and Ashley were a bit taken aback by the sudden exclamation from Bre.
“What?” Melissa blinked, her hand in the bowl of popcorn. They watched as she shook her head, flipping the calendar closed and tossing it across the table in disgust.
“You girls are leaving me in just two short weeks!” the youngest girl groaned, her face crumpling in disappointment. “I’m stuck with one more year in high school, and I will barely get to see you!”
“We’ll only be an hour away,” Ashley observed. “You should visit!” she brightened, sitting up.
Bre sighed. “With what car?”
Ashley’s face fell, and she pressed the mute button on the remote, no longer able to focus on the slasher film that was playing. “True,” she paused. “Well, this does suck.”
Needless to say, the guys were quite surprised to reenter Ashley’s house and find, in place of the cheerful girls they had left that morning for an interview, three dejected and forlorn friends sitting in silence on the couch. Joe paused on the threshold of the living room, blinking at the unexpected change in atmosphere.
“Did we get the right house?...What…happened here?” he gaped, finally entering the room and plopping down in an armchair, taking in their sad faces with quite some confusion.
Nick sat down next to Bre, taking her hands in his. “Is everything okay?” they could hear him murmur softly. Bre shook her head, eyes downcast.
“Okay, someone needs to enlighten us. What’s wrong?” Kevin asked quietly from behind the couch.
“They’re leaving me!” Bre exclaimed, sinking into Nick’s arms with a sigh.
Nick blinked, looking up at Mel for an explanation. “We’re heading back to campus in two weeks,” she clarified, fiddling with the fringe on the pillow next to her.
Nick pressed a soft kiss to Bre’s forehead. “Cheer up, love. I have some good news,”
Kevin and Joe raised their heads, eyeing him questioningly. He shot them a pleading look, and soon comprehension dawned on their faces.
“What?” Ash and Mel asked simultaneously, their curiosity getting the better of them.
Kevin grinned, hopping over the side of the couch and plopping down next to Mel. “Our label decided it would be good to make a commercial for our album release, so we just got word that all this week we’ll be filming for it in California—“
Bre buried her face in Nick’s shirt. “So you guys are leaving too?!”
Nick tilted her face up. “Well, how would you three like to come with us?”
There was a short pause, and then the whole room erupted into a flurry of action. Melissa practically tackled Kevin in her excitement, almost sending the laughing pair to the ground in a heap. Ashley grabbed Joe in a huge, happy hug, not noticing his cheeks turn pink. Bre starting laughing in relief, and Nick smiled down at her, glad to see her cheerful again.
Melissa hopped off the couch and Kevin righted himself, still chuckling at the enthusiasm of the girls. “We need to start packing! When do we leave?” she turned back to her boyfriend.
“Tomorrow,”
“Tomorrow! We’ve gotta pack NOW!” she immediately ran upstairs. “We’ll start with Ashley’s stuff!”
“Hey! Wait for me!” Ash shouted, following her quickly.
Bre sat up, Nick’s hands sliding from around her shoulders to grasp her hand lightly. “Thank you, guys. This will end the summer on a memorable note.”
They smiled at her.
“Now, we’d better go check on them. They are far too hyper right now. People could die.”
Laughing, all four of them headed upstairs.
