Okay here's Chapter 4...
Chapter 4
Stephanie’s POV
I rushed home. When I got there, I quickly opened the door, got inside, closed the door, and leaned against it. Heaving heavy breaths, I replayed what happened. Maybe I was just overreacting. What if that person had no intention to hurt me? No…if he didn’t, he wouldn’t have been staring at me. And I knew he was staring at me. I could feel his eyes on me.
“Steph?” I heard a voice.
With great relief, I said, “Hey, Nathen.”
I heard his footsteps coming towards me. “You okay?”
“Huh? Yeah. Yeah I’m okay.”
“Well, you don’t look okay. Did something happen outside?”
“N-no…nothing.” I walked to the kitchen. I had memorized every corner of the house so it would be easier for me to go to different portions of it.
Soon enough, Nathen was by my side. “Seriously, Steph. Tell me. If something wrong happened, I can fix it right away. Just tell me.”
I really did not want to stress him over something that wasn’t even that serious, so I just didn’t tell him. My older brother was very protective, especially since I had gotten blind. To make sure I was protected, he could even beat someone up (however I hoped that day would never come).
“Really, Nathen, nothing happened. I was just sitting on the swing at the playground, and I heard Mr. Mainer’s dog barking, and I got scared, so I came back home. Nothing serious.”
“Okay.” His voice sounded doubtful. “Anyways,” he said, changing the topic, “What do you want for dinner?”
I shrugged. “Anything’s fine.”
“Just pick. We have steak, pasta, and that casserole I tried making the other day.”
My eyes widened. The casserole? NO WAY! “I’ll…have the pasta.”
Joe’s POV
“Can you pass me the pasta?”
Kevin did as I told him.
“Honey,” Mom said, “You came late.”
“I know…I’m sorry. I guess I just lost track of time.”
“Or maybe he just found a girl and started flirting,” said Nick under his breath.
I glared. He looked down at his plate.
“Joseph.”
“Sorry Mommy.”
After dinner, I helped Mom with the dishes, and then went upstairs right away. I didn’t feel like doing anything. Today was a big shock for me.
I got into bed, but couldn’t sleep. The same thing crossed my mind again and again.
Stephanie was blind.
I shut my eyes, even though I couldn’t sleep.
Stephanie’s POV
The next day, I walked back to the playground, hoping there would be no danger. Of course, this time my best friend, Courtney would be with me, so I would be safe.
“Hey, Stephanie!” Courtney greeted as I walked across the road towards the park.
“Hi,” I said with a smile. I made my way to the playground, and then felt Courtney’s hand on my shoulder, directing me to the slides.
“What’s up?” Court asked once we sat down on the ground.
I shrugged. “Same old stuff. Nothing new.”
“Oh. Are you doing anything during summer?”
“No…summer’s very boring.”
And so we kept on talking about random stuff.
Joe’s POV
I decided on taking another walk the next day. I got to the park and looked around, hoping to find Stephanie. Finally, my eyes landed on an area near the slides. Stephanie was sitting on the ground, talking to a girl I didn’t recognize.
I chose to stay hidden, in case she started getting scared again.
They were just talking about random stuff. First they talked about summer, then school, then the big sale that was going on in the mall, and then…boys.
“I can’t wait until school starts again,” said the girl next to Stephanie, “I really want to see Tyler again!”
I had no idea whatsoever who this Tyler person was, so I just assumed he was the girl’s boyfriend.
Stephanie shook her head. “That’s all you think about, right? Boys, boys, and boys!”
“Well, there’s nothing wrong with it,” said the girl.
“Come on, Courtney. Life isn’t all about boys.” Stephanie told her.
“My life isn’t all about boys!” Courtney defended.
Stephanie raised her eyebrows. “Oh yeah? Then explain why every time we hang out, all you talk about is your precious boyfriend.”
Courtney’s face flushed. “W-well…”
“Exactly.”
I knew I shouldn’t have been listening in to girl conversations, but this was very interesting.
Courtney sighed. “Well, what do you know? You’ve never had a boyfriend!” Now her face flushed even more. “Oh…Steph, I didn’t mean it that way…”
Stephanie’s expression didn’t change at all. “Hey, it’s okay, Court…”
“No it’s not. I’m so stupid!”
“Court! Seriously, it’s not that big of a deal. I’m not into boys, and that’s the only reason I don’t have a boyfriend. It’s not because I’m blind.” Her answer was so frank and straightforward. I was astonished.
“You should have a boyfriend,” Courtney suggested.
Stephanie shrugged. “What’s the point.”
“If I tell you something, will you promise you won’t be hurt?”
“Yeah, Court. Anything.”
She hesitated, then said, “People…people think that you don’t date because you’re…” She didn’t need to finish.
Stephanie smiled. “Let them say whatever they want. It makes no difference.”
They were both quiet for a while. Finally, Courtney spoke. “Hey, whatever happened to that guy that you always liked?”
She grimaced. “Wh-what guy?”
“You know…the guy who moved to California…then…never contacted you?”
Her expression changed from happy to gloomy. “Can we please not talk about that?”
“But, why not? Come on, I’m sure he wasn’t that bad.”
Stephanie got angry. “Sure, he wasn’t that bad. I mean, going to California to become a famous rockstar and then never even bothering to contact your old friends isn’t that bad.”
“Do you seriously dislike him that much?” Courtney asked.
Stephanie scowled. “I don’t dislike him. I HATE him!”
My heart dropped when I realized that I was the guy who went to California and became a famous rockstar…I was the guy who never contacted my friends…I was the guy who Stephanie disliked…no…HATED.
