Chapter 10
Kati’s POV
“Oh, I so own you!” Nick yelled laughing as he flipped over nearly launching the entire game board into the air. I held my stomach laughing so hard so that I felt like I was going to puke.
“Hey, just because you’ve won the last 4 games of LIFE and now are wearing the Pretty Pretty Princess crown, doesn’t mean you own me. You just have….just have…” I placed my finger on my lip searching for the right word.
“Mad skill?” Nick giggled flashing me a killer smile while he adjusted his Pretty Pretty Princess with pride sending massive shivers through my stomach. I quickly shook the thought from my mind.
You can’t like him, Kati. He is just not…not…dateable
“I was going to say luck, but I guess you may have a little bit of mad skill, but only a tiny, microscopic bit. Don’t get a big head, rock star,” I laughed as I reached over to knock the crown off his head watching it bounce across the cream carpet. Nick opened his mouth wide acting like he was offended.
“Hey, I was going to share my success with you, but now that you’ve knocked my crown off I don’t think you deserve it, “Nick said giving me a smug look. I stuck my tongue at him as I pressed my back against the couch and let out a relaxing sigh. Nick and I had played exactly 4 games of LIFE, 3 games of Scatagories,7games of Candy Land,, and 2 games of Pretty Pretty Princess, and I had lost every one of them. Apparently, Nicholas Jonas not only could sing, write amazing songs, and play multiple instruments, but he could also make it through Candy Land in a minimum of 3 turns. It was 3:00 in the morning, but I wasn’t near ready for this night to end. Nick side smiled as he leaned next to me at the foot of the couch.
“Whatcha thinkin’ about?” Nick asked glancing at my eyes that were fixed on the beige ceiling. I sighed slightly as I scanned my head for an answer. Truthfully, I was deciding whether or not I was going to waste my time liking Nick, or just shrug off all the shivers that I got when he smiled at me with his deep brown eyes, but I would be crazy to tell him that.
“Everything,” I said quickly running my fingers through my hair.
“Everything? Wow, you must have a lot going on up in that noggin of yours,” Nick tapped my head with his hand lightly smiling brightly. My stomach dropped at the contact of his hand to my head and I immediately smiled slightly back at him.
“I don’t know, I always have something on my mind, I’m always over thinking something,” I sighed gently not moving my gaze off his dreamy brown eyes.
“Well, what is in your mind right this second,” Nick took a breath and leaned his head back onto the cushions of the couch.
“Um…” I hesitated.
“Me? Of course it’s me, cause I am amazing, especially at playing board games at 3 in the morning,” Nick laughed shooting his head up to look at me. I giggled pushing his arm slightly.
“You, sir, have a big head,” I said with a smug smile leaning my head back against the couch. Suddenly a smack of a pillow slamming against of my facing caused me to jump out of thought. I looked up to see Nick holding a blue pillow and smiling mischievously.
“Ow, what was that f…” I was cut off by another smack. Quickly jumping up, I grabbed the closest pillow and whacked Nick on his curly head. Laughing, I swung at him again hitting him right in the face making him fall on the couch and knocking the pillow across the room. Nick cupped his nose quickly and tucked his head. Realizing he was hurt, I rushed by his side and put my hand on his shoulder.
“Nick, are you okay? Nick?” Suddenly Nick grabbed my pillow off my lap and hit me lightly with it.
“Oh, you’re good, but not as good as me,” I laughed running after him as he sprinted down the upstairs hallway.
“You’ll never catch me alive!” He yelled in a raspy voice laughing wickedly.
We chased each other up and down the halls when finally we collapsed back in the game room out of breath and giggling uncontrollably. We both leaned back against the couch and gasped for air. I turned my gaze to him finding that he was looking back at me. I fought the fire coming up to my cheeks as his brown eyes landed on me.
You can’t like him, Kati, You can’t, he has a million girls to choose from, he wouldn’t choose you, he would never choose you, remember the poem!
I shook all my thoughts from my head. If this was too good to be true, I was going to let it happen anyway. Suddenly, Nick leaned closer toward me. I felt my heart thumping widely as I couldn’t stop myself from doing the same thing. A shock of electrifying chills raced through my body when I felt his breath against my face.
Is he going to kiss me? Wait, is this a joke? Kati, wake up and smell the coffee, this is not happening
I leaned in closer and closer when suddenly a door opened quickly and both Nick and I whipped our heads away from each other slamming the tips of our foreheads together.
“Ouch,” Nick winced rubbing his forehead and peering into the hallway to see who was there. I sat frozen. I wasn’t able to move. If that really did happen, then what am I supposed to do now. I couldn’t comprehend anything that was happening.
Was it real? Is this a dream? I probably sound incredibly stupid.
“Nick, are you still up?” Kevin’s voice emerged from the hall as I switched my gaze to find Kevin in my purple tinker bell pajama pants and an undershirt. I chuckled at the sight that Nick was wearing my dad’s oversized, only pair of plaid pajama pants. I had left several pairs of pajama pants for them with the sheets just in case they wanted to change out of their jeans, but I didn’t expect to wear them. IKevin squinted from the light in the game room trying to see us clearly.
“Uh, yeah…” Nick said rubbing the back of his head nervously as he got up from the couch and turned to me, “Maybe I should go to bed.”
“Yeah…me too,” I nodded avoiding contact with his eyes. He reached out his hand for me to grab, and I pulled my self up ignoring the shivers that sped through my arm.
“Goodnight, Kati,” Nick with a small smile as I turned to go down the stairs to the family room couch that I would be sleeping on for the remaining hours of the morning.
“Night…” I hesitated to smile, but forced an awkward grin to come across my face as I slowly stepped down the stairs.
That didn’t just happen
Nick’s POV
“Come on, Nick, get up you big curly headed mop of laziness, get up,” Joe cried jumping up and down on the bed as I hid my head under the covers and groaned.
“If you wanted more sleep, maybe you shouldn’t have been flirting in the wee hours of the morning,” Joe smirked pausing his jumping to pull the covers off of the bed. I would have beaten him up for that; In fact I was about 2 inches away from his bouncing ankle. I could have easily grabbed his ankle and jerked it up causing him to fall off the bed, but being awake for almost 2 more hours after I left Kati while I played everything that happened that night over and over in my head left me with as much energy as a piece of dust.
“5 more minutes…” I said groggily as I tucked myself in a tight ball to hide from the rush of cold air that came with the absences of the covers.
“Come on nick, I can’t believe I’m up before you! Dad, Mom, and our manager are coming to pick us up any second. You need to get dressed and go tell Kati how much you love her and how much you never want to never leave her and…” I cut him off by finally finding the energy to yank his ankle sending him flying down toward the mattress. I jumped out of bed and shook out my curls.
“Ha Ha Ha, my plan wor…” before Joe could say anything else I hurled a pillow at him. A door bell chimed as I rushed my pants, shirt, and shoes on and dashed out the bedroom door behind Joe. I felt guilty for leaving Kati’s room in a mess, but I thought I would apologize to her later.
“Hello, I’m Kevin Jonas and this is my wife Denise,” I heard my dads voice echo through the house as I jogged down the stairs ruffling my hair and straightening out my clothes.
“We are so sorry about this. We don’t know how to ever thank you enough!” Mom said in her soft voice after a round of “hello’s”. I whizzed pass Joe toward the living room. A whirl of butterflies overwhelmed my body when I saw Kati sound asleep on the leather couch. Gabby was passed out on the love seat right next to the sofa Kati was on covered with mounds of blankets while Kati sat with only one sheet shivering. Snatching one of the blankets off Gabby, I gently covered Kati with another blanket then stood up quickly biting my lip.
Pen, Pen, I need a pen
Grabbing a red sharpie off of the end table I carefully wrote my name and number on Kati’s hand that was hanging off the couch.
“The boys have a show tomorrow that is no more than an hour away from this neighborhood, we have some tickets and backstage p*CENSORED* here to thank you for your trouble,” I stopped to listen to my dad’s light voice and then looked back at Kati. Biting my lip I let out a sigh.
At least I’ll be seeing her soon
“Nick!” Kevin called from the front door. I jogged out of the living room and toward the front door.
“Chill out dude, Faye will still be at the hotel if we get there 5 minutes later,” I laughed as I ran my fingers through my hair and reached out my hand to shake Mr. Chase’s hand goodbye.
“Thanks so much for everything,” I said turning toward Kati’s parents as we walked out the door. Once I heard the door close, my stomach dropped. I knew that I would be seeing Kati tomorrow, but what would happen after that.
I don’t know if I can live without seeing her again
