Chapter 3
Leah groaned as her alarm clock threatened her with its annoying beep. It was summer and she thought that meant she was free of its annoying trill, but that wasn’t the case. It was Thursday so Leah had to get up earlier than normal to make it to the radio station.
It was nine forty-five by the time Leah made her way down the stairs to the kitchen.
“Morning sunshine, ready for your big day today?” Leah’s mother said as the bacon sizzled in the pan. “I’m making breakfast for you.”
“Sure…” Leah said as she sat down in a hard chair at the kitchen table “Thanks, you didn’t need to.”
“Oh, well someone needs all the energy they can get if they are going to be running around all day.” Leah’s mom said, not taking her eyes off the almost cooked bacon.
“Oh, um ok, well thanks.” Leah said before getting up to pour herself a glass of orange juice.
They both sat there in silence as her mother finished cooking. Cadence and Nadine eventually made their way downstairs. They were both in their pajamas and both had their brown hair pulled back into messy ponytails.
Plates of food were soon set in front of all three children. Once they were settled, Leah’s mother brought her plate over to sit with them at the table. Their father was at work so it was just the four of them.
“Mommy, can I go with you and Leah to the radio station?” Nadine asked. Ever since she had turned thirteen she acted like everything was her business and made sure she was apart of everything.
“No, sweetie, you are going to have to go over to Alana’s today while we are gone. Cadence will be going to Melody’s house.” Leah’s mother said between bites of food.
Nadine was about to protest, but stopped after receiving a look from her mother.
The rest of breakfast was relatively quiet and eventually they all finished and went their separate ways. Naturally, Leah went straight to her room. They didn’t need to leave for another thirty minutes so she took advantage of her time alone, knowing she would be very busy over the next week.
Sure enough the thirty minutes went by relatively fast. However, before Leah left she made sure to stop in front of the mirror. She wore dark skinny jeans and a graphic tee. Her wavy, shoulder length, brown hair looked surprisingly good for once. Taking one last look in the mirror she made sure everything looked at least somewhat good before she placed white sungl*CENSORED* over her hazel eyes.
As Leah walked out the front door to the car parked outside she couldn’t help but wonder why she was suddenly interested in what she looked like. Normally she just threw on whatever pair of skinny jeans and graphic tee was lying on the floor, but today she took a little more time with choosing her outfit.
The radio station wasn’t very far away, but to Leah it felt like forever. The whole time she couldn’t help but wonder who the date was going to be with. She knew Kevin was four years older than she was, but she couldn’t help but hope it was him.
“We’re here!” Leah’s mother practically yelled with excitement.
After locking the door, the pair made their way over to the doors in the front of the white building.
“Leah, we were expecting you!” Said a man the second they walking through the door. “Just in time too, follow me right this way. I’m Grant by the way, and I’m the one who is dealing with the messy details of the contest. Oh and Mrs. Evans, you will need to come with us as well so we can sign some papers before we send your daughter off!”
Leah and her mom exchanged glances before they were ushered into another room. Inside were two other girls and their mothers. One of the girls had short blonde hair and incredible blue eyes. The other had black hair that went halfway down her back, and had deep brown eyes.
Leah was quickly introduced and found out that the Eleanor was the blonde while Sadie had the black hair. The girls just exchanged smiles as they sat there. Grant quickly went into the details of the whole trip while all three girls sat there bored out of their minds, which was saying something if Leah was bored.
A good amount of time later Grant spoke up causing the girls to perk up in their seats, “Well, we are just about done, I need you three lovely ladies to sign these papers and then we can go out and you can meet the boys. Oh, but don’t forget that we have the obstacle course first.”
