She had fallen victim to procrastination, sitting in Starbucks at a table in the corner. She could always think here, but today she was having no such luck. An English paper beckoning to be written, due in 14 hours, 8 pages in length, and she had nothing written. The cursor on her laptop blinked at her, like it had for the past hour she spent staring at the blank screen of Microsoft Word. She sighed deeply and took a sip of her vanilla frappuccino, soothing her stress for the 10 seconds she sipped it. Reaching for her chocolate chip muffin, she peeled back the wrapper and indulged herself in the sweetness.
When she was finished, she turned back to her computer and stared at it, typing a few words and then deleting them all within seconds. The backspace button became her best friend, using it more than the actual letters on the keyboard.
Before long, a sneeze was developing inside of her. She knew exactly why. Clutching her nose to try and prevent it, she was unsuccessful and a powerful explosion erupted. She swore that the walls rattled. Looking for a napkin to clear the result of her sneeze off of her face, she panicked. She used it when she finished her muffin.
A friendly hand was extended towards her, napkin included. “Bless you” a warm voice said.
She jumped, not noticing anyone was seated near her. Taking the napkin, she wiped her face, responding with a “Thank you”.
He had now stood up and walked over to where she was seated, “Mind if I join you?”
Her voice caught in her throat, “Umm… I… Uh…. Sure.”
He smirked at her remark and seated himself across from her at the table, firmly clutching his coffee, “That was some sneeze.”
“Yeah… It happens a lot. Chocolate makes me sneeze” she said while blushing.
“Wow, so you’re allergic to it, I’m assuming?” he asked intrigued by this statement.
“No, just something about it makes me sneeze when I eat it.”
“I understand, kind of” he said as they both laughed.
Extending his hand, he continued, “I’m Kevin…”
“I’m Spencer” she said as she shook his hand.
She noted his firm handshake, and the way his eyes penetrated deep into her soul, like he was searching for her story. That piercing stare he held with her, made her weak in the knees, and had she not been sitting, she probably would have been on the floor at this point. Never in a million years would she have predicted that Kevin Jonas would be in Starbucks making conversation with her. By this point, she had succumb to the numbness in her body after he touched her.
Casually making small talk, she answered his questions and struck up light conversation to the best of her ability. She learned that he was in town to do a show with his brothers, her favorite band. Halfway through their chat, she discreetly pinched herself, to make sure that she had not been dreaming. Upon impact with her skin, she realized that this was quite real.
He glanced down at his watch after an hour, and quickly stood. “I promised my mom that I’d be back by now. I’m sorry, I have to go.” Her heart sunk deep in her chest. The guy whose posters graced the walls of her room was now leaving her and her unwritten paper.
She nodded, “Ok, well it was nice meeting you.” He made his way over to her, arms outstretched. She just sat there, staring. The thought of being that close to him scared her. She was now frozen, not able to move. Finding the strength inside of her, she finally stood, meeting his embrace. Closing her eyes, she took in everything about that moment; the way he smelt, how he held her, the way he smiled as he took her in his arms.
As they broke apart, he handed her a napkin. He playfully smiled and winked at her, “Don’t lose this one.” She watched as he walked away, pushing open the door and shoving his hands back in his pockets. Once outside, he glanced back at her and waved.
The napkin had been folded, so she carefully opened it to its normal size and saw that there was writing on it followed by what she presumed to be his phone number.
Next time you eat chocolate and sneeze, use this. It’ll come in handy. –Kevin
She turned back to her laptop and began to type what was now radiating from her heart:
Fate can be described as a path that often leads one person to another by a coincidence of events……
3 hours later she had her paper completed, on the topic of fate, which found her tonight when she needed it the most. As she sat on her bed, she took an Oreo and dunked it in some milk. 5 minutes later, she found herself sneezing because of the chocolate. She reached for the phone and dialed his number. Right when he picked up, she sneezed into the mouthpiece and he laughed, “Did you use the napkin I gave you?”
“No, I used my sleeve. But I used the number left on it, and it led me to you. I thought I’d inform you that I just ate some chocolate.”
For about an hour they talked, she thanked him for the napkin and for being the inspiration for her paper. Not telling him what her topic was, but promising to email him the final copy, he ended the conversation with a simple question, “Do you believe in fate?” She found herself smiling, “If I told you no, I’d be lying.”
