The Time Alone With You

He grabbed his bags and flew off the tour bus, running down the sidewalk as fast as he could, almost knocking over his younger brother in the process. If only his feet would move faster, maybe he could get to her quicker. A block and a half later, he had reached her front door. Once inside, he dropped his bag and slowly made his way up the stairs. He assumed the rest of the house was still asleep since it was 6am on a Saturday morning. Walking into her room, he stopped in the doorway, unable to move any further as he watched her sleeping peacefully.

After a few minutes, Nick slowly made his way over to her bed and gently laid down next to her. Her eyes fluttered open with the sudden movement and she caught glimpse of the warm body wrapped around hers. She could tell who it was by the aroma of his cologne and the way his curly hair fell just above his eyebrows. He smiled at her, unable to contain his happiness that he was finally able to hold her again. She stopped breathing just for a moment, and began to cry.

He lifted her chin up, “Baby, please don’t cry. I’m here now.”
She inhaled quickly and responded, “I know. It’s just… I can’t believe you’re here.”
Again, he smiled, “Why wouldn’t I be? Ever since we were little, I’ve always been the one to wish you happy birthday first. This year shouldn’t be any different, so here I am.”
She couldn’t believe that he was back. For five months they had been on the road, touring non-stop. And here he was, in her bedroom. Just like old times.
He held her close for a few minutes. He could feel her heart beating as he closed his eyes, wishing to stay like this forever. Their breathing synchronized and he cherished the time spent alone with her, even if it was only for a short period of time, he valued it none-the-less.

His tour with his brothers ended yesterday, and he convinced his parents to drive through the night so he could wake up with her on her birthday. Even though he was the silent type, the feelings he had for her were evident in his smile. You could see it in his eyes that he was in love. She was the first thing on his mind when he woke up, and the last thing he thought about when he closed his eyes. Before he went to bed each night, he thanked God for her, and he kissed the picture of her that he put under his pillow as he slept.

He gently brushed a few stray hairs out of her eyes and looked deeply into them. One gaze into them and he loses himself completely. He loved how when she smiled, her eyes glistened with happiness. He began to speak, “Happy Birthday.”
She giggled as she kissed his nose, “Thank you.”
He blushed profusely, something he did a lot of when he was with her. Sitting up, he continued, “So do you want your present now?”
She nodded her head anxiously as he reached into his pocket, fishing for the box. She threw the covers off and arranged herself so that she was sitting in front of him.
He took her hand and began to speak, “Brittany, ever since we were little, I have been in love with you. When I’m away from you, it kills me inside. It’s never enough just talking to you on the phone, I need to see you… to be with you. With each passing day, it becomes more and more clear that you’re the girl for me.”
At this point, she began to cry. It was your classic story of childhood sweethearts, only at the age of 17. They were inseparable.

He let go of her hand and clutched the box, “I know that we’re too young to get married, but I want to promise you that I’m yours… forever. Because baby, you’re the one, and I’ve never been so sure about anything in my entire life.” With that he opened the box, revealing a silver ring. The band was simple, and engraved with their names and today’s date. “With this ring I promise myself to you, because one day I’m going to marry you.” She was hysterical with tears at this point, but they were happy tears.
He took the ring out of the box and placed it on her finger. He looked up at her and kissed her, “I love you, Brittany.” She smiled and found the strength to speak, “I love you too, Nicholas.”
His traditional ring had been replaced with a new one. On his left hand was an exact match of the ring he had just given to her.
It was agreed that they would wait… together. And for now, that was ok. Because just knowing that one day she would be his, was enough to make him happy forever.
