When I turned to look at Kevin, he was standing slightly behind me. He was looking at the inside of his suit jacket. He pulled out a small, blue velvet box with one hand while his other hand reached for mine. Guided by his hand, I stood up. “Erin Marie, babe, I love you. We’ve been through so much together this past year and four months. We’ve faced so many hardships, but they never tore us apart- they only strengthened our bond. Erin,” he paused and got down on one knee, “please be mine forever. Will you marry me?”
Tears started to leak from my eyes. “YES!” I replied, my voice hoarse from the shock. The entire restaurant erupted in applause as Kevin slipped my purity ring off and replaced it with the engagement ring. He stood up and pulled me into a tight hug. I rested my head on his shoulder and let my joyful tears soak through his jacket. He placed a kiss on my forehead and I looked up at him before placing a kiss on his lips.
I turned around to see Nick holding a video camera and Joe snapping picture after picture. Denise wrapped me in a huge hug and whispered in my ear, “Now you’re going to officially be part of our family!” I laughed as the rest of the family came over to give me hugs. We all sat back down and Kevin and I enjoyed our piece of cake.
As we ate desert, Frankie explained to me that Kevin had been planning to ask me for two months, but that he wanted to wait until it was our year-and-four-month anniversary because of the significance in the date. “See, Erin, today is May 14th and it is also your 1.4 year anniversary! The numbers match!!” Frankie excitedly explained.
After the bill was paid, everyone except for Kevin and me returned to the tour busses. We took the car that Frankie and his parents had arrived in and we drove to a near-by park. Kevin helped me from the car and led me to a park bench surrounded by candles. We sat down and I leaned my head on his shoulder. He took the blanket that was on the bench and wrapped it around us. We sat in silence for a few minutes, staring at the stars and enjoying the quiet. I was the first to speak, “Kevin, I love you so much. What you did for me today was unbelievable. The dress, the shoes, the ring! Everything was so special. Thank you.”
His arm pulled me closer to him. “Babe, I love you too. I’d do anything to make you happy, to make you feel special, to make you feel loved. I know you’ve been feeling down lately because you’re baby bump is growing, and I know I’ll never fully understand why. But, I think you’re gorgeous- especially with the baby bump. You radiate beauty, Erin, and I can’t help but smile every time I see you. I never want to be apart from you, Babe. Telling the world that we were dating and asking you to marry me felt so right, and I can’t wait to call you Mrs. Jonas.”
He placed his lips on mine and pulled me into his lap. I whispered, “I love you,” repeatedly on his lips before he cut me off by deepening the kiss. When we pulled apart, I looked at his sparkling, hazel eyes. “Whenever I’m with you, Kevin, I feel whole. You complete me, and I know that feeling will never change. Most importantly, though, is that when I’m with you, I feel safe again, like nothing can ever hurt me because I’m surrounded by your love.”
A small tear slowly rolled down my cheek. His strong arms wrapped around me and he held me in a strong, but loving, hug. He kissed my forehead as he whispered, “I love you, Erin. I do now and I always will. Nothing can change that.” He ran his hand through my hair and I sighed into his chest. I got off his lap and he stood up, wrapping his arm around my waist. We slowly walked back to the car, and as we did, he whispered five words that made me realize everything would be ok from now on: “Babe, you’re safe with me.”
