A Fortune or Two
She pulled her hair back into a ponytail, in hopes of not getting some weird person complaining when they saw her. She hated her after-school job, but she knew that if she wanted to be able to go to the concert of the year she had to do it. As she made her way up the front steps she bit her lip, by habit, and then knocked on the door. When it was pulled open by a tall brunette boy she didn’t even look at him just at the address in her hand.
“Um is this 2235 LaSalle Ave?”
“No… It’s not.”
She groaned and looked up her breath catching in her throat when she realized who was standing there. Nicholas Jerry Jonas, the whole reason she was working this horrid job, so that she could go and see him in concert.
“Your Nick Jonas.”
“Um… yea.”
“I’m not going to scream. I was just shocked. As Will Smith one said, always remember, life is not about how many breaths you take, it’s about how many moments take your breath away. And meeting you did. So um… do you know where 2235 LaSalle Ave is? Cause I’m lost and well as much as I want to quit my job. I can’t if I want to go to the concert.”
“What concert,” he seemed interested and she decided to be straight forward and tell him.
“Yours. I am a huge fan of you and your brothers but my mom said the only way I could go was if I got myself my ticket and to do that I have to have money and for that I need a job.”
“I could give you a ticket… and backstage pas.ses.”
“I could give you free Chinese food.”
“Don’t you have to deliver that to someone.”
“If you give me a ticket I don’t have to work and if I don’t have to work I don’t care if they get their food. I work under the table anyway so no one can tell the cops on me. Besides all I do is deliver food and take cash. And that house I’m now not going to was my first stop. So want so food?”
“Sure.”
She walks inside carrying the food still and they sit together on a couch just eating and talking. Suddenly the sound of footsteps and singing causing her to look at Nick worried.
“It’s just Joe.”
“Joe Jonas.”
She makes a little sound and her body shivers a bit causing Nick to give her a little look.
“Do you like Joe?”
“No not really I mean he’s cool but he’s not my favorite Jonas. And no I will not tell you who is.”
“Hey Nick who is the chick?”
Nick rolls his eyes and looks at his older brother with a small smile.
“This is…”
He turns realizing that he doesn’t know her name and she laughs.
“Malou.”
“Yea she’s Malou. Malou this is my brother Joe which you already know.”
“Oh she’s a fan how did you two meet. Who ordered Chinese food? Am I your favorite.”
“Yes. Take out. No one. No.”
Joe looks shocked at Malou and blinks a few times before looking back at Nick.
“Huh?”
“She just answered all your questions in order. She is a fan. She was delivering take out and came to the wrong house. No one ordered Chinese but I traded her a ticket to a concert for the food. And no you aren’t her favorite.”
“Oh… Who is your favorite? It’s Kevin isn’t it?”
“I am clearly favoring the one who is six years older than me.”
“Oh so it must be Nick then. Such a shame you’re prettier than him.”
Joe walks off and Malou looks at Nick shocked. But Nick is just shaking his head and eating an egg roll. Her egg roll.
“Hey that was supposed to be mine.”
Nick looks around and frowns.
“Um… but you know I wanted it more.”
“Okay whatever.”
Malou rolls her brown eyes and then pulls her hair pull of the ponytail. Nick grins as she fluffs it a bit and then reaches his own hands up and does the same thing. She laughs at him and sticks her tongue out slightly. He laughs in return and they start up their friendly conversation one again. Before either of them know it its dinner time and she is being invited to spend the time with his family.
With a slight blush she agrees, dinner with her favorite band like that wasn’t one of her many wishes. After a few silent minutes she grows to understand the family more and even jokes around with the ever loud Joe.
Kevin was rather quiet and reserved at first but as the dinner went on he got louder encouraging Joe and often joining in. Nick was ever so quiet only speaking when he was spoken too and she was shocked by this, just earlier they were having conversations and telling jokes freely. Frankie though was the one who won over her heart, he sat next to her, held her hand and in detail described his favorite toys to her.
When dinner ended she was asked to stay for desert and that is when she realizes something. Nick and herself never had their fortune cookies from the Chinese food they had earlier. She rushes to where they left the food and picks the two cookies out of the box bringing them back for Nick and herself.
She cracked hers open and laughed reading the words on the little paper.
“I think this was meant for you Nick.”
Joe looked over her shoulder and laughed before reading the fortune aloud.
“You are a gentleman of outstanding wisdom.”
“Well I like my fortune,” Nick says with a little grin.
Malou smiles back and after desert stands to leave with Nick following after. At the door she grins widely knowing what an awesome friend she had made today.
“So what was your fortune.”
“It said it was up to me to create my own adventures. And I plan on it. So what do you say same time tomorrow, how about Wendy’s this time. I’m buying.”
Malou smiles and leans over kissing his cheek and then pulling away. But then he puts his hand on her waist and drags her close to him. Their lips touch just briefly and when he pulls away he grins widely.
“Tomorrow.”
