Chapter 1
A Harsh Beginning…
The bus seemed to drive on ceaselessly. Malou Lavigne watched with bleak expectations as the rolling folds of green hillsides flashed by her finger splotched window. She stared with a dull, depressed expression. Beyond the hills and dense mountains of Kentucky, lay her new prison. Malou knew the reason she was being sent. She had gotten herself into some bad situations, sure. But that wasn’t the main reason. Her family was slowly banishing her from their world. Malou had never been apart of it. She was different; had different viewpoints. But her parents could never accept her for that. They expected her to be a cookie-cut of themselves. So they where sending her to this camp… Camp Hope, in hopes she would learn who she was meant to be… them.
Malou looked around the bus. Her chocolate brown eyes studied each girl carefully. Malou had a way of noticing peoples’ personalities. Maybe it was by their style, or the secret behind their faded eyes. She could feel the tension practically vibrating the bus. Almost every girl had the same expression: “This sucks…”
Malou never had very many friends… none worth keeping anyway. When she was told she was being sent to this camp—there was some hope that maybe… possibly there was someone who would notice her. But now reality took control. Every girl sat, gazing longingly out their window—into a world they wished they had. She saw behind their eyes hurt and depression, and her hope diminished down to nothing.

I cannot speak it. I dare not say it. It’s something hidden inside me, like a tormented shadow, wreathing in pain and suffering. It’s something I wish I could tell, but can’t... they won’t understand. The only person who could truly understand me... is myself. And even I don’t know half of what I am. I feel my closest friends—aren’t my friends. They don’t know the real me, and they never will. I’m afraid. I can’t tell them. Maybe it’s because in reality, I don’t know this raging force bursting inside me. I can’t understand it. I wish I could grasp this feeling and read it or see it. But I can’t. I can only stand in this world, burdened with something I don’t know. The only way I see letting it go, is by releasing my anger. I’m always doing something wrong. It seems to be born in me. I can’t escape it. I see no way out...
Brittany Fox paused a moment as she felt the bus slow and begin turning. She looked up and peered idly behind long sandy curls. Her bright crystal blue eyes rested on something that made her suddenly freeze. Swinging on a sign overhead large iron gates were the words—“Camp Hope”. She sat up as she saw what lay beyond the sign. One of the girls behind her gasped in shock, “Holy… shiitake mushrooms…”
There in front of her—shone a place she could’ve sworn she’d seen before… in her dreams. White fencing stretched it seemed for miles, framing pastures filled with sleek, fine boned horses. The road was crowned with old oaks; some of their branches just brushing the roof of the bus. Brittany found herself smiling—something she hadn’t done for ages. The lined oaks and fencing followed them, and she found her gaze drifting out to the turquoise green pasture. Colts frolicked and kicked out their legs playfully at their presence; their tails swishing about, their long mains whipping at their necks as they tossed their heads. Brittany wished she could be them—running about a pasture with not a care in the world. They were so happy and content, with not single light of worry or hurt in their eyes.
“Hey! What’s this? …” someone suddenly cried behind her. Brittany jumped and looked down at the diary in her lap. She let out a gasp when she saw it wasn’t there. Her head whipped around in horror and her eyes met the dark gaze of the girl behind her. The girl smiled maliciously and held up her book.
“Aww! How sweet and old-fashioned…” the girl taunted, reading over the last page she’d written.
Brittany went to grab at it, but the girl placed it behind her back so she couldn’t reach.
“Give it back!” Brittany pleaded. “Please! It’s all I have…”
The girl laughed as she looked her over.
“Obviously, Charity Case!” she cried. “Where’s that shirt from? Goodwill?”
The girl sitting next to her suddenly wrenched the book from her clenches and gave it back to Brittany.
“Marni, shut up!” the girl said, glaring back at her after giving Brittany her book. “Don’t make this situation worse than it already is. Leave her alone… or you know what’s comin’ to ya…” she held up a fist.
Marni snorted and shook her head.
“Well then Jamie… maybe you need to work on that swing of yours first…”
“Ohhh…” Jamie fumed, rubbing her fist. “I guess you’re in for a demonstration then…”
A new voice stopped them.
“Excuse me…” Malou said hotly from across the bus. “But I thought we were supposed to work out our problems here… not make them worse!”
Marni twisted around to face Malou, and eyed her coldly.
“Well who said we wanted to come to this camp in the first place?” Marni shot back. “Huh? Maybe our parents are the ones with the issues, not us!”
Brittany slowly slid back down in her chair ‘till her back was almost glued to the seat, clenching her book to her chest. Her lungs let loose an exasperated sigh. Would she ever escape this cruel life?
