Malou slipped on her dark skinny jeans, threw on her “Lucky Mart” workers polo and ran out the door. “Crap,” she mumbled under her breath, she forgot to get her little sister’s mac and cheese ready for her. She knew her older sister, Spencer wouldn’t do it, since she practically spent all her time, well doing nothing except obsessing over Kevin Jonas and his two other brothers.
“Liza!” Malou shoved the mac and cheese in the microwave, and waited impatiently for it to heat up. She was picking away at her black chipped nail polish, when the microwave finally beeped. Putting the mac and cheese in a bowl, she practically threw the bowl onto the table. “Liza! Your dinner is ready, I hafta go!” Little Liza ran out to the kitchen, her blond pig tails bouncing up and down. “Bye Malouuuuuu!” “Bye Liza. Remember, Spenc is in her room if you need her.” Malou kissed Liza gently on the forehead and ran out the door. She was late, again and Jamie was gonna kill her.
“You’re late Mal,” Jamie was standing behind her register focusing on the current objects she was swiping, but knew without looking up that it was Malou.
“I’m sorry sorry sorry, but you know how it is Jamie. Dad’s gone on some business thing, and I’m practically left acting as both mom and dad for Liza,” she tried putting on her badge that said, “HELLO! I’M: Malou!” but poked her finger. “Ouch.”
Jamie finished with her customer and walked over to Malou, “You seriously need to stop playing mom AND dad. You’re sixteen for God’s sake, you hardly ever go out and you have a nineteen year old sister.”
“I know, I know, but ever since the accident I can’t help it…and you know me, I’d rather stay at home any day.”
“Malou, what am I going to do with you?” Jamie playfully pushed her shoulder and walked back over to her register where a customer was waiting and looking a little aggravated. Malou just stood and stared blankly.
Maybe Jamie was right. Maybe for once I need to take care of myself for a while.
