Hey guys! Okay, so this is for Mal, who auditioned for a one shot and chose "By Your Side" by Tokio Hotel. Love the band. Love the song. Kind of angsty though. But anyway, here it is! Comments are loved and appreciated.

He had met her in the rain. She was walking down his street when the skies started to pour, he was chasing after his insane brother in the middle of a paint ball war. She was only wearing a tee shirt and he, being polite, offered her his jacket and ended up walking her home. They lived only a couple blocks away from each other and after their first meeting, spent a large amount of time together. He found out that her name was Malou, but liked for her friends to call her Mal. She found out that his name was Nick Jonas, and that she better not forget it, because he was planning on becoming famous one day in the band he and his brothers had.
Over one summer they became closer than close, spending every day together hanging out. Soon they became all too comfortable in each other's company, Malou would come over to the Jonas' house just to read a book while being around the Nick. They knew everything about each other.That had been two years ago, and now Nick was famous. They had kept in contact and met once in a blue moon, but for the past three months Mal hadn't responded to any phone call or text message he sent. As Nick and his family pulled into their Jersey home driveway, he wondered what Mal was up to.
After he ate dinner he decided to go pay his old friend a visit. When he got to her house he was about to walk up to the door when it flew open and a girl with dark hair and blonde chunks ran past him.
"Mal?"
The girl turned around and looked at him questioningly.
"Yes?"
"It's me, Nick."
"What do you want?" She asked bitingly.
Nick was taken aback. This was not the warm welcome he was expecting. So in shock was he that he didn't even realize that she hadn't even stayed to hear a response and had to run to catch up to her as she briskly walked down the street.
"I wanted to say hi, and see if we could hang out again sometime."
Surely this was a joke. His Mal would never say such things. They were best friends.
"No," was the only thing she said and she took off running down the street.
Nick was hurt and confused. Why was she acting like this? Whenever her and Nick had a problem, they had told each other about it. Even when he was on tour and they could only send messages, they still "talked" everything out. Feelings hurt and pride stung, Nick walked back to his house in a haze of confusion.

The next night Nick was jogging through the neighborhood to clear his head over the previous night. He still didn't understand what he did to evoke such cold words. As he passed by her house he noticed that she was curled up on the porch swing. Soft cries coming from her direction. He walked up to her and she looked up at him with eyes filled with tears. She wiped hastily at them but then pulled her arm down quickly, as if to hide it. Nick had already caught a glimpse and sat down beside her, grabbing her arm and strongly pulling it over to him.
Raw scabs spelt out the word "help" on her arm. Nick softly traced the letters cut into her skin.
"Mal?" he asked, voice heavy with emotion.
"Sometimes I just feel empty…" she whispered. Nick looked into her eyes. Even tearstained and red, he found her eyes the most beautiful color he knew. Seeing the pain inside of them made him feel a tear in his heart.
She realized what was happening and quickly stood up, ripping her arm away from his grip.
"It was nothing… just nothing. Go home Nick."
He stood up and quickly pulled her into a tight embrace, but she pushed out of his arms. Malou turned to her door. She was about to walk in when Nick whispered words that made her stop.
"I'm here for you." He took her pause in motion as a good sign.
"You don't want me around right now, but I'll be here. Whenever you need me just find me, okay? Mal, I care for you so much and you need to know that."
He heard her take in a deep breath as her shoulders started shaking once more.
"Goodbye Nick."
And she walked inside and shut the door.

Nick walked by her house everyday for a week and knocked on the door, but no one ever answered. He knew that her parents were most always absent on far off business trips, but this was getting ridiculous. He knew she was there and he even saw the curtains in the second story window move. 'Why would she shut me out like this?' he thought. The days that had passed increased his worry over her and he was also somewhat angry at what had taken place. What did he do that merited her cold sholder? He wanted to help. He gave one more knock on the door. No one answered.
Sighing, he turned to leave when he saw a movement in the window by the door.
"Mal I know you're in there! I told you I'm here for you, and here I am, but where are you?"
There was no response. Nick finally turned and walked slowly back to his house. He knew that if she didn't open that door soon, he'd do something drastic. A light flashed across the sky, followed by a far off rolling boom. The weather reports all day had called for rain storms. Bur Nick didn't want to think about the rain. It just reminded him of the girl locked inside her house.

By nightfall, the rain was coming down in heavy sheets while the moon peeked cautiously out over the clouds. The alarm clock by Nick's bed read 1:52 AM and he still couldn't go to sleep. All he could think of was Mal. 'His friend,' he thought, 'his beautiful, talented, best friend who worries the crap out of me.' His thoughts were interrupted as a persistent thunk came from his window. It was louder than the rain and steadily repeated itself. Nick rolled out of his bed and wiped his bleary eyes to look outside
There, standing in front of his house with a rock in hand, was Mal. Shocked for a moment, Nick came to his senses and threw open the window. He threw on a hoodie and sweats and climbed out onto the roof, then manueved down a tall tree. He stumbled as he hopped onto the ground and quickly walked towards the girl. She was wearing another tee and jeans, and had her arms wrapped around her front.
"Mal?"
She looked up from under her wet hair to gaze at him. Nick wasn't sure what to do as he stood in front of her, afraid that she might get angry at him for getting too close. But when she looked up and threw her arms around his waist, collapsing into quiet sobs, Nick felt a small sense of relief with a great sense of worry and slowly walked her to their porch swing. Through hiccups and tears she told him how she had felt so lost when he had gone away, and when her dad had left her and her mom, she felt even more alone in the world. Her mom had turned to work to ignore the pain, and Mal finally found that she felt nothing but emptiness. Hearing her story made Nick feel her pain.
"Why didn't you ever tell me?"
She sighed against his chest, her tears all cried out.
"You were on tour. Becoming famous. And that's great. Really. But I didn't want to bother you because you were so busy."
Nick had never felt such a strong anger at himself before. If he had been there, if he had listened more, if he had called...
"It's not your fault Nick. I just stopped answering the phone eventually."
She looked down bashfully. Nick grabbed her chin and lifted it up towards his. He leaned over even closer so his cheek was brushing against hers and whispered into her ear.
"I will always be by your side. Wherever I am, all you need to do is turn around, call me. No matter what. You know I love you Mal."
His voice was filled with emotion as he pulled back and looked straight into her eyes. Malou almost got lost in the depths of his intense gaze, and didn't even realize the two of them leaning in closer towards each other until he placed a gentle kiss on her lips.
She smiled slightly at the sparks that filled her entire being. Nick pulled her back towards him as he rocked the swing with one leg. She decided that by his side, everything was starting to look up.
