What’s Your Name?
A Kevin Two-Shot
“Girl’s night?” Tina asked when she heard the greeting from the other line.
“Definitely.” She laughed back, “Pick me up in ten?”
Fifteen minutes later, late like a girl, Tina had pulled into the paved driveway to Kat’s house. She honked the horn three times, to let her know she was there, and moments later the front door swung open. Like all of their girl nights, Kat paraded down the porch steps in a cami and her favorite blue flannel pants with the green ornament ribbon bouncing in the front. Her hair thrown into a messy bun atop her head, she tossed her overnight bag onto her shoulder and slipped into the passenger seat.
“Starbucks run and movie grab?” Tina questioned, knowing the obvious answer.
Their girl nights were always the same. They drove straight to the Starbucks around the same hour of the night, Kat ran inside while Tina waited idly in the parking spot to keep the car running. Afterwards they jetted across the street to the Blockbuster where their movies were already picked out in their minds and easy to grab. They loved sappy girl movies, and tonight they had settled on 27 Dresses.
I turn around, you’re there again, and suddenly you’re gone.
I wanna get to know you, but I don’t know who you are.
Kevin Jonas was a well-known rock star, but when he had a break, he took full advantage of it. He didn’t have a girlfriend, and although he kept an open eye on the girls he spotted throughout the tour, he was never really satisfied. Instead of settling for something he wasn’t happy with, he opted on personal days to himself while his brothers paraded around town with their long time girlfriends.
“Carly and Niki are coming over later, you wanna join us?” Nick politely asked, receiving the same look he got every return home.
“No thanks, I think I’ll do my normal routine for tonight.” He softly responded back.
Running a hand through his messy curls, he splashed a light dab of cologne on before running down into the garage and revving the engine of his Jeep. Waiting patiently for the garage door to open, he started tapping his leg and a single bead of sweat dripped from his forehead. He glanced down at the time on the dash, the numbers reading out 7:05, leaving him with about ten more minutes.
And you’re the kinda girl who makes me start to lose my mind.
I wanna get together but you’re oh, so hard to find.
The ten-minute drive felt like hours as he stopped and drummed the steering wheel at every stoplight on the way. Today, he told himself, today is the day I say something. Today would be the day, that is if the light would turn green and give him a chance to make it.
I see ya when I’m at the Starbucks, as you’re walkin out the door.
I see you when I’m rentin’ movies, when you’re leavin’ the store.
He pulled into the parking lot, quickly putting the Jeep in park and running inside to grab a drink. As he stood at the end of the counter, waiting for the new girl to make his beverage, he saw the flannel pants from the corner of his eye. He whipped his head around, the curls bouncing from the motion, as she stepped through the door outside, signaling the chime.
“Here you go sir…” she trailed off as she gently placed his cup in front of him and walked to the next order.
Slipping a coffee collar over the steaming cup he bolted through the door and into his Jeep, just as he saw her hop into a car and pull away.
“OW!” he shouted, biting at his tongue from the sudden flood of hot caffeine in his mouth. Aggravated, he placed it in the cup holder and turned the key in the ignition. Slowly pulling out of the space he drove forward and followed the burning Red Mitsubishi headed across the street. Parking once again, he picked up his drink and shimmied unnoticed inside the movie store.
He pretended to scan the movies on the shelf, as she strutted up next to him. Nodding to herself, he watched as she reached out to grab the new Katherine Heigl flick. Before he could blink she had already made it up to the register. Grabbing the closest movie to him, he clutched it tightly in his other hand as he crept up behind her.
“Thanks Marty” she smiled as the old woman behind the counter handed back the DVD and waved goodbye.
Kevin didn’t want to miss his chance, so he gave the woman an apologetic look, and flashed a weak smile.
“Changed my mind, sorry.” And he pushed through the door only to catch her already driving away.
I need an opportunity, there’s somethin’ I wanna ask.
I never seem to ever get the chance.
