Unfinished Business Resolved
“Just call her already, would you?” Nick told his eldest brother. Kevin had been sitting and staring at the phone for the past hour, picking it up every once in a while only to put it back down a few moments later.
“I can’t. I want to but I can’t” he muttered back.
“Fine. I’ll do the dialing for you,” Joe said grabbing the phone and pushing the buttons before Kevin could even react. “There, it’s ringing,” Joe said handing the phone to his brother.
Kevin just sat there looking at it before a voice could be heard by all in the room. “Hello. Hello? Hello?!?” the voice said becoming increasingly louder with each word.
Joe placed the phone to his brother’s ear resulting with Kevin actually grabbing a hold of it. “Hello?!?” the voice said once again sounding very frustrated.
“Heather, hi. Um…it’s Kevin,” he said and mentally slapped himself. Could he have said anything lamer?
“I kind of figured it was one of you Jonas boys since it’s the number that showed up on caller I.D. So what’s up? I haven’t heard from you for a few days, which is odd considering we used to talk everyday but ever since…” Heather began to ramble so Kevin cut her off.
“Yeah I know. Um…I think we should probably meet and talk about that. Do you think that we could maybe meet at…” Kevin stated before he was interrupted by her voice.
“Our spot in the park?” she finished his question for him.
“Yeah,” he replied softly.
“Of course. Why don’t we meet there at 7? Is that good?” she queried. He quickly glanced at the clock to see that it was already 6:30.
“That sounds great. I’ll see you there at seven,” he confirmed. They quickly exchanged goodbyes and then hung up the phone. He looked up from setting the phone back on its hook to see his brothers both grinning at him. He just rolled his eyes before going up to his room to get ready to meet Heather at the park.
When he arrived at the park and made his way to the park bench beneath the big oak tree that they had claimed as their ’special spot’, he saw that she was already there. Her brown hair was up in a messy bun and she was just in a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt but he thought that she looked beautiful. She always did to him no matter what she was wearing or how she was feeling. Even sick she was beautiful and he has seen her sick plenty of times.
He continued walking up to her and when he was just a foot away from her, she looked up and saw him. A smile spread across her face and he hoped that it was because of him.
“Hey,” he greeted her a little shyly. Ever since what had happened a few days ago in this very spot, he seemed unsure of himself when he would see her. They still hadn’t talked about it so he had no idea how she felt about the almost kiss that had occurred. Did she regret that it almost happened or did she wish that they hadn’t been interrupted just as much as he did?
“Hey,” she replied back just as shyly. The two of them stood there for a few moments in a bit of an awkward silence, neither one of them knowing how to bring up the past incident.
“So…” they both started at once. Kevin chuckled a little but figured that he would let her continue. When she didn’t he spoke up again. “So…about what happened the other day…” his sentence trailed off since he wasn’t sure what to say.
He stood there looking at her, seeing the different emotions run across her face. He could tell that her mind was having its own little argument, probably trying to decide how to break the news to him that she was just caught up in the moment and hadn’t actually meant for anything to happen. That she just wanted to be friends and that she didn’t have any other type of feelings for him.
“You think that it shouldn’t have happened, don’t you?” he finally blurted out after they were enveloped in awkward silence for a bit longer.
A look of pure surprise appeared on her face. “No, that’s not it at all Kevin. Honestly I wanted it to happen and have for a while. I just didn’t know how you felt about all of this, and I still don’t,” she told him. He looked shocked himself for he was definitely not expecting words like that to come out of her mouth.
He didn’t even reply. Instead he stepped forward and took her into his arms. Finally he did what he had been wanting to do for the past year and a half. He captured her lips with his own and kissed her as passionately as he could. They split apart after a few minutes, both completely out of breath.
“I guess that gives me my answer,” she muttered before seizing his lips with hers once again.
