Forever
One-shot
Harmony rolled onto her back and stared at the hazy moon. There was a thick blanket of stars laid out in the deep blue, mid-night sky. She grimaced, and then stared down at her hand. Beside her was Nick, his hand in hers. He scrutinized her face, waiting for her to speak. She didn't. She just stared at their interlaced fingers and remembered all the times they shared. She wondered why mid-nights on the beach chimed a bell in her mind. She also wondered why Nick had brought her here, but she figured they were connected.
"Have you figured it out yet?" Nick's soft, velvet voice was just a whisper and part of the darkness. "Do you know why I brought you here?"
"Because you love me and you wanted our date to last?" She asked clueless. Nick chuckled, but he shook his head. His expression was soft, yet frustrated. He sighed deeply. "I'm sorry; I don't have the slightest idea." Harmony apologized. Nick stared into her deep green eyes.
"You're not thinking hard enough," he reprimanded, "try harder." He encouraged, "I think it's so obvious. You're wounding my ego; I thought you'd figure this out in a minor-second. Perhaps I should've taken you somewhere else. Maybe I can at least hold it off until tomorrow, and think of a place that means more to you. I just thought this place meant the most to you." His words were low, he seemed hurt.
He stood up. "Are you ready to go?" he asked, his voice small. He held out his hand and she took it and he helped her to her feet. Harmony gazed at him, still incredulously confused.
"Nick, I'm really sorry," she held his face in her left palm, keeping her right hand interlaced with hers. "Can you please tell me why? Maybe the thing is I'm trying too hard."
"I don't think I should tell you, at least not now."
"Please?" She begged.
He sighed, "I love you." Before she could respond, he pressed his lips against hers and then slid on his knee. He took her hand in both of his, and he weighed her shocked expression. He didn't know if it was a good sign or bad. "Harmony, you're the only girl I've ever cared about so powerfully. I've loved you since I was about thirteen, and I plan to love you for eternity. Without you, nothing else in the word matters. Will you marry me?"
There was a long silence. Then, Harmony remembered. The one night on the beach when Nick asked her out on their first date. Then, another time on the beach was when he first told her he loved her. She also recalled a time on the beach where Nick gave her a promise ring, and now, a true engagement ring. This was real. Harmony gazed down at him, speechless. There were many things she wanted to say. Some of those words consisted of feelings she kept inside for a long time, others were ever more lovey-dovey stuff.
She pulled Nick back up to his feet, and he stared at her with saddened eyes. He misread her actions. Before he could even speak, this time, Harmony pulled him closer and attached their lips. "Yes." She whispered. "I remember now. Everything. I remember we came here when we were six-teen and you gave me a promise ring. You told me you'll be here forever, as long as I wanted you. And I'm sure I want you to. I love you Nicholas Jerry Jonas."
He slid the engagement ring onto her finger, where it would stay. "I love you, too, Harmony Marie Jonas." He smirked.
She grinned, "That sounds surprisingly right!"
Nick pulled her closer and kissed her passionately, his lips brushing along the hollow of her throat and collarbone, too.
"Nick, I'm not dreaming, am I?"
"No, promise." Nick reassured, pressing his head against hers. "I really do love you." He vowed.
"And you'll be here, right? As long as I want you to be?"
He rolled his eyes. "Forever."
