Citizen/ Solider.
A one-shot.
He was a well respected man in his town, a blood brother to one other brother and three sisters. He had a two children of his own along with a wife. But not only that, he belonged to a huge brother/sisterhood. He was a small part of the National Guard. His baby sister, at the age of fifteen, would be little into her tenth grade school year when he leaves for Afghanistan. Not only was he a citizen…but he was also a soldier.
-The day of his leave-
His family and friends had known about this day since November of the previous year. But they figured the war would be over by then. But it wasn’t.
“I’m proud of you son.” His father had said.
He too had been in a war before, so it made him proud that son was doing the same. His baby sister had thought about giving him the cold shoulder for numerous reasons. Like for leaving; but that wasn’t his fault, so she couldn’t do that. Or for joining the National Guard; but it’s never bothered her in the five years he’d been a part of it, and she didn’t want to be hypocritical, so she couldn’t do that. And what if he didn’t come back? What would she do if she didn’t speak to him on his last day in the States and found out that he didn’t make it? She wouldn’t know what to do with herself. Tears rolled down her cheeks, she knew she was selfish for not wanting him to go, she knew she should be proud of his accomplishments, but she was proud. In her own way, she just didn’t want him to leave. Then it was her turn to tell him goodbye. She was the last one to do so.
“I’ll miss you crazy kid.” Her brother embraced her into a hug.
“I’ll miss you more.” She replied.
-After his leave-
She cried, and cried. Until her best friend came back from touring…but he had no clue what was going on.
“What’s wrong?” Nick asked.
“He’s gone. My brother left for Afghanistan.” She sobbed.
“Everything will be okay.” Nick hugged her tightly.
“How do you know?” She said. It was an obvious fact that she was in denial.
“This rock star has some common sense. You’re just thinking the worst case scenario.” Nick explained to her.
From then on, she knew her brother would be fine and she’d see him in a year.

Ah. That felt just a little more refreshing after getting the worries off my mind.
Probably not the best...but my mind feels a lot less cluttered now.
