Prologue
“Annie, guess what I got you!” Mrs. Samson’s yell filtered into Annie’s room.
“Um, dinner?” she guessed, looking up from her novel. Her stomach rumbled hopefully.
“Better! Come down here and I’ll show you!”
Sighing, Annie climbed off her bed, sliding a cutout of Kevin Jonas into her page. Feeling lazy, when she reached the top of the stairs, she slid down the railing, landing with a thud on the floor. Her mom gave her a brief stern look before grabbing something off the counter and holding it behind her back. Annie watched her, impatiently twirling a strand of dark hair around her finger.
“Ok now pick a hand,” said her mom, a grin spreading across her face.
“Mom!” Annie cried in an exasperated tone. “I’m too old for games like this!”
“Fine, then you don’t get it,” huffed Mrs. Samson, looking annoyed.
“Alright, alright!” Annie held her hands up in surrender. “I pick…this hand” she pointed at her mom’s left hand.
The grin returned as her left hand was held out. Sitting in her palm was…

“Oh my GOD, Jen, I got Jonas Brothers tickets!” Annie screamed into her phone, staring down at the two most precious pieces of paper in the world that lay on her bed.
“No WAY!” screamed her best friend, Jen into the phone. “Who are you taking?”
Annie rolled her eyes. “Santa Claus. I’m taking you, dummy!”
“Oh my GAWD! I love you, Annie!”
She chuckled. “I know.”

The four most agonizingly long months of Annie’s life passed without event until it was finally the day of the show.
She and Jen met in the morning and camped all day outside the arena, hoping that they would be able to catch a glimpse of the boys arriving. Sure enough, when the bus pulled up, the boys briefly greeted the few dozen girls that had arrived early.
“Gah! Nick just told me he liked my hair!” cried Jen, after Nick had walked by and complemented her tight curls, similar to his own.
“I know, I saw! And I video-ed it!” screamed Annie.
They were in mid fangirl scream when another girl walked up. They struck up conversation to kill time until it was finally time to go in and have the time of their lives.

“Oh my Lord, Ann, look at Nick,” Jen practically screamed in Annie’s ear. But still, she couldn’t hear her. She nodded anyhow and turned her attention back to the stage. The girls’ seats were amazingly right up front, but also right next to the speakers. They could hear the Brothers loud and clear, but nothing else.
“Alright,” said Kevin into the mic, as they ended the song they had been singing. “Let’s turn up the volume for our next song. Burnin’ Up baby!”
Annie’s eyes widened in horror. Turn it up? Are they serious?!
But they were. As the first chords started up, Annie pressed her palms firmly against her ears, crying out. The music was louder than anything she had ever heard before. And then…excruciating pain. The inside of her ear felt as though it had exploded and imploded all at once. She screamed in agony and collapsed on the ground.
No one heard the scream over the noise in the room. But, everyone around saw her fall. Jen gasped and crouched down next to her friend. She struggled to pull Annie’s hands from her ears, but when she did, a scream escaped her throat. Blood spilled from both of her ears, making puddles on the cement floor.
“Oh God…Annie…talk to me…can you say something?” Jen pleaded, looking into Annie’s bleary eyes. But she just gave her one last frightened look, before passing out.
“Someone! Help me!” Jen screamed into the din. “Help!”
